The Indian Premier League: Go fetch that

One of the world’s most controversial sporting events is back on track

THE lobby of the Royal Gardenia, an “eco-friendly” five-star hotel, was crowded with television crews and photographers on January 8th and 9th. Bollywood stars and business tycoons were also on display, including Bangalore’s “King of Good Times”, Vijay Mallya, a flamboyant brewer and airline owner. They were shopping for cricketers to play for their respective teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), a three-year-old contest that has transformed India’s favourite game and transfixed the country. In a two-day player auction watched live on television by around 19m people, 127 cricketers were sold for $62m.

For the owners and the IPL’s organisers, this was cause for relief. Since the conclusion of its third six-week season, last April, the league has been beset by feuding and scandal on an all-India scale. A high-profile minister, Shashi Tharoor, lost his job in a row over the finances of a new IPL team for which he had lobbied. The league’s charismatic creator and boss, Lalit Modi, was charged by India’s cricket board with taking multi-million-dollar kickbacks and other misdemeanours. (Both men deny wrongdoing.) Two of the IPL’s ten teams, based in Rajasthan and Punjab, were accused of irregularities in their ownership and expelled. They were reinstated last month, at least temporarily, on the courts’ say-so. On the eve of the auction, there were rumours it would be cancelled and the next season, due in April, postponed. But the brouhaha now seems overdone. The IPL, which is estimated to be worth over $4 billion, is probably too big to fail. …

Detroit – first impressions

Well, that’s the first day of my first Detroit show and as I write this, I have the slightly surreal experience of looking out of the hotel window across the river to what is Canada.

There’s still snow on the ground and the river is partly frozen, so it’s fair to say it’s a little chilly in these parts – minus 9 celsius or whatever that is in the farenheit the Americans resolutely insist on using.

Queuing on the 70th floor of the massive Renaissance Centre last night – right next to GM’s citadel –  that is ‘seventy’ as the English football tickertape information used to make clear as teams beat each other ‘seven,’ nil, I found myself just in front of new GM CEO Dan Akerson.

I said to the GM boss it was my maiden trip to the event and he said it was his first Detroit show too in his new capacity. I later saw him today at the Chevrolet stand surrounded by a scrum of photographers and cameraman as he toured the show with a local congressman.

Interestingly, to continue the football theme, there’s been a rash of managerial comings and goings in the English Premier League as our American friends refer to it in the last few weeks, with Liverpool appointing club legend Kenny Dalglish as caretaker manager.

Akerson – probably completely unfamilar with the intricacies of the Premier League – gamely joined in with the lingo later, inisting: “I hope I don’t project I’m a caretaker manager” – an unlikely scenario given GM’s turnaround of late.

And a propos of nothing, I’m not sure I’ve seen a major city with fewer cars on the road – which for place nicknamed ‘motown’ certainly struck me as bizarre. Off to ‘Good Nite Gracie’ tonight – is it a retirement home? – where Opel boss Nick Reilly is due to make an appearance.

India’s cricket scandals: Modi blues

The boss of the crisis-stricken Indian Premier League takes a tumble

AROUND midnight on April 25th, as the final of the third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) came to a close, Lalit Modi, the cricket tournament’s manager and mastermind, declared to a dwindling crowd, “I reassure millions of passionate fans of the league and the game across the globe that IPL is clean and transparent.” Moments later the BCCI, India’s cricket board, which owns the IPL, suspended him while investigating claims that the opposite is true.

Mr Modi is said to have presided over a litany of financial irregularities at the IPL, whose short and fast-paced version of cricket, called Twenty20, has been wildly popular and a commercial success, generating billions of dollars in broadcasting rights and attracting lavish bids for the privilege of owning a team. According to Shashank Manohar, the BCCI’s president, “misdemeanours” on Mr Modi’s part “have brought a bad name to the administration of cricket and the game itself.” …
