NASA’s new rocket: The first (and last?) flight of Ares

The launch of the Ares I-X raises hopes at NASA

NASA’s new Ares I-X rocket was launched successfully from the Kennedy Space Centre, in Florida, on October 28th. It is part of the American space agency’s programme to replace its ageing shuttles and create a vehicle that could take people to the moon. The political backdrop to this test flight, which cost $455m and lasted only a few minutes before splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean, is uncertainty over whether Barack Obama’s administration will continue the course set by President Bush (high in ambition, low in funding) or set out on a new path that matches the agency’s goals with its budget. Without more money, this will mean conceding that Americans will not return to the moon by 2020, as Mr Bush hoped. And a change in this direction might mean scrapping Ares in favour of something cheaper.

Tech Industry Can Learn from DOJ Inquiries into IBM Mainframe Business

Analysts say the Department of Justice’s inquiry into complaints about IBM’s mainframe business should give other large technology vendors an idea of how the antitrust issue will play out under the Obama administration. The analysts also draw on IBM and Apple as examples to give tech giants a couple of suggestions on how to dull the pain of such inquiries.
– Five months ago, on May 11, the Obama administration revoked an antitrust
policy established during President Bush’s regime that regulators said hindered
their ability to take on anticompetitive behavior by companies that dominate
their market.
At the time, Department of Justice officials said a…

Republican US senator ‘to resign’

Mel Martinez

Republican Senator Mel Martinez of Florida is to resign, according to US media reports.

Mr Martinez had already announced his intention not to stand for re-election when his term ends in 2010, citing a desire to spend more time with family.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist is one of the candidates vying to be the Republican senate candidate in 2010.

As governor, Mr Crist will now pick an interim senator to serve for the remainder of Mr Martinez’s term.

Immigration reform

Born in Cuba, Mr Martinez, 62, was first elected to the senate in 2004, having served in President George W Bush’s cabinet as secretary of housing and urban development.

Mr Martinez was a staunch supporter of President Bush’s attempts to reform the US immigration system, which made him unpopular with some conservative Republicans.

He has denied suggestions that his decision not to seek a second term was inspired by his tough electoral prospects.

"My priorities have always been my faith, my family and my country, and at this stage in my life, and after nearly 12 years of public service in Florida and Washington, it’s time I returned to Florida and my family," Mr Martinez wrote in a resignation letter obtained by the Associated Press.

His resignation will be "effective on a successor taking office to fill out the remainder of my term," AP quotes the letter as saying.
