Ahead of the fall session of the UN General Assembly, both Belgrade and PriÅ¡tina have stepped up their diplomatic activities. Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić has been in New York for some time preparing the ground for Serbia’s delegation that will take part in the session, due to start in mid-September.

Priština’s Union Hotel burns down
The Union Hotel in Priština, which is considered one of the most important architectural monuments of the city and Kosovo, was destroyed in a fire on Friday. Police in Priština stated on Saturday that there are suspicions that the fire was not accidental, and one person has been taken in for questioning. They added that the investigation is still ongoing, however.
Macedonia extradites suspected killer
Macedonia has extradited Mehmet Ukisini to the Kosovo judiciary on Tuesday afternoon, Priština media reports. He has been accused of committing war crimes in the province when he killed two Serbs.
“Kosovo, Albania residents might need visas”
Visa liberalization for Macedonians traveling to the EU could lead to limiting entrances for residents of Kosovo and Albania to Macedonia. PriÅ¡tina’s Albanian language daily Koha Ditore writes that Kosovo and Albania residents might need visas to enter Macedonia starting on January 1, when Macedonia will find itself on he Schengen white list.
Kosovo police discover cannabis field
Kosovo police have discovered a cannabis crop covering 1.5 hectares of land in the village of Suvi Do, 16 km from Priština. Police are currently on the scene, destroying the crop.
Daily: EULEX mediates in talks
The EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, has started mediating in talks between representatives of Belgrade and PriÅ¡tina, writes an Albanian language daily. Koha Ditore quotes high ranking EULEX officials as saying that this mission is “very interested in finding acceptable solutions for Belgrade and PriÅ¡tina over those issues that are of a technical nature, such as border management, missing persons and police cooperation of Kosovo and Serbia”.
K. Albanians “seek help persuading Serbs”
“Kosovo institutions have asked for help from international factors in order to entice Kosovo Serbs to take part in local elections,” writes a PriÅ¡tina daily. Albanian language newspaper Koha Ditore explains that thus far, not a single “political subject” in five municipalities with majority Serb population has applied to take part in the ballot scheduled for November. These municipalities are “supposed to be formed in the fall”.
Priština to submit added material to ICJ
Priština has announced that it too will be submitting comments on the depositions by other countries in the case concerning Kosovo’s independence at the ICJ. The closing date for this is July 17.
EU chief to call for better cooperation with EULEX
EU Foreign and Security Policies Chief Javier Solana is continuing his final tour of the region in that capacity with a visit to Priština. According to reports, Solana is due to meet in Priština with Kosovo President and Prime Minister Fatmir Sejdiu and Hashim Thaci.
K. Albanians to send “new arguments”
Representatives of the Kosovo Albanian government in PriÅ¡tina will on July 17 send additional arguments to the International Court of Justice, reports said. The move, according to Albanian language daily Koha Ditore, will seek to “defend the legitimacy of the independence declaration”.
Dominican Republic recognizes Kosovo
The Dominican Republic has today recognized Kosovo, the Kosovo Albanian government’s foreign affairs ministry in PriÅ¡tina announced. The ministry also said that the Dominican Republic congratulated “authorities and people of Kosovo on their achievements so far and on forming institutions that have enabled the people to have a sovereign and internationally recognized state”.
Bulgaria to open embassy in Kosovo
The Bulgarian Liaison Office in PriÅ¡tina is to become an embassy, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia has announced. “The outgoing Bulgarian government has decided to raise the Bulgarian Liaison Office in PriÅ¡tina to the level of an embassy. Ambassadorial duties will for now be discharged by the current office director, Ivo Ivanov,“ PriÅ¡tina media report.
