Talks on scaling down public administration are under way between government officials and union leaders. Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković is confident of reaching an agreement.
Cvetković rules out VAT increase
The government will not be increasing VAT, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković announced today. “At the upcoming talks with the IMF mission, our proposal will not be to raise VAT,“ said Cvetković in response to media speculation that a VAT rise was one of the government’s ideas to increase budget revenue.

The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) has warned the government to halt unilateral implementation of the trade agreement with the EU or risk bankruptcy. “I think that Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković and Finance Minister Diana Dragutinović should immediately inform the public how much tax payer’s money has been wasted on the unilateral implementation of the trade agreement with the EU,” DSS official Slobodan Vuksanović told Tanjug.
PM plays host to Slovakia’s LajÄak
Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković has praised Serbia’s relations with Slovakia, stating that cooperation with Bratislava is vital to Serbia on its EU path . Speaking to Slovakian Foreign Minister Miroslav LajÄak, Cvetković welcomed Slovakia’s support for the immediate implementation of the Interim Trade Agreement and visa liberalization for Serbian citizens.
Govt. to meet with union reps
Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković and Economy and Labor Ministers Mlađan Dinkić and Rasim Ljajić will meet with union officials to discuss public sector reforms. The draft law on public sector reform calls for the number of employees in public administration to be reduced from 30,000 to 28,000.

According to B92’s sources, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković will be holding separate consultations with various ministers regarding reforms in the public sector. The talks will lead to determining how many employees from the state administration and public companies will be made redundant in order to cut state spending in accordance with demands made by the International Monetary Fund.
Slovak PM: No recognition of Kosovo

Pride Parade cancelled due to high risk of violence
Authorities have told organizers of the Pride Parade that the safety of its participants cannot be guaranteed and that, therefore, the event cannot be held. Organizers held an emergency press conference after a meeting with Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković, at which they were told that the risk of excessive attacks on the rally is too great for police to guarantee safety for everyone involved.
Fate of public administration jobs still unclear
With the crucial IMF visit only a month away, the government has yet to release precise figures on how many people in public administration will be fired. PM confers with Chamber of Commerce chief

PM notes improvements in retail sector
Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković, ministers and representatives of retail chains believe there has been a marked increase in solvency in the retail sector. According to the government, over 70 percent of retail chains’ debts to their suppliers have been settled, while the time taken to settle dues has fallen.
