Macworld Shows Off a Slew of Creative, Colorful New Products

Some 270 Apple products vendors& the highest number in the 27-year history of the Macworld Expo& and upwards of 20,000 attendees were on hand Jan. 27 for the three-day event at Moscone West in San Francisco. That is, all except Apple itself, which is MIA for the second year. Macworld President Paul Kent told eWEEK that about one-third of the vendors and half the attendees are new to the event this year, a clear indicator that Apple is reaching new stature in the world market with the iPhone 4 and iPad products it released in 2010. On the show floor, a flurry of color and activity could be found on Day 1, with new music-, photo- and storage-related products; an iPad-connected smart-card reader; a Macintosh-run PBX phone system; a clever write-on-paper, show-on-screen classroom system for teachers; and a video-sharing application for iPhones and iPads. Entertainment this year includes comedian Sinbad and Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudness, who will demo his Morphwhiz music application, which is an iPad synthesizer he uses in live performances. Here are highlights of this year’s show. (Photos by Chris Preimesberger, eWEEK.) – …

EMC Launches 41 SMB Storage Products in Splashy Transatlantic Event

There was a lot of storage product information to present all at once, but EMC was bound and determined to do its first product launch of 2011 in a huge way on Jan. 18. In concurrent New York City and London events, the world’s largest independent storage company took the wraps off 41 new enterprise storage products for all markets. The new items, which become available in the current quarter, include a line of low-end storage servers aimed at SMBs called VNX and VNXe, which eventually will replace the company’s standard Clariion and Celerra products; an upgraded version of the Data Domain backup packages; a new Data Domain archiving array; its first branded Isilon "big data" array; and new software for its Symmetrix VMAX systems. The entry-level VNX and VNXe storage systems feature a starting price of about $10,000, so the traditionally large-enterprise company is making a concerted effort to move downstream in the market. Oh, yes, a splashy event like this wouldn’t be complete with photo opportunities, and there were a couple of nonsensical stunts involved. – …

10 Enterprise Products That Will Shape IT in 2011

It’s easy to pick the best products of 2010. Hindsight is 20/20. And there are plenty of lists out there already, including several lists right here at eWEEK. But what about picking the top products for the New Year? Here, eWEEK’s Eric Lundquist takes a long gaze into the technology crystal ball to see what products will shape the IT world in 2011. Some of the examples include trends that have already started, such as cloud computing, ubiquitous virtualization in the data center, and the growing need for mobility in the enterprise, especially as tablets become more popular with executives and employees alike. While those seem obvious, what about the growing need for true unified communications? Is 2011 the time when your business gets rid of Microsoft PowerPoint for good? Then there is always the ongoing need for security, especially in the wake of what happened to Gawker and how WikiLeaks showed that any sensitive data can end up on the Web. 10 New Google Products We Want to See in 2011

With the end of 2010 drawing near, it’s time to start looking ahead to what Google could have in store for 2011. The search engine (can we even call Google just a search engine anymore?) moved wholly into mobile with Android taking off on smartphones from Samsung, Motorola, HTC and LG to challenge Apple’s iPhone. Google also launched a social conversation service called Buzz that showed a bit of how the company thinks about social networking. But we want to see more, which is supposed to come in the form of Google + 1. So where should Google focus its efforts in 2011? It’s clear the company should focus on three technology sectors in 2011: mobile, search and social. Google faces increased competition from Apple, Microsoft, RIM and others in the mobile computing market. Getting Android on more tablets will be important to counter the rise of the iPad. Google also needs to keep boosting its purview over search and other property traffic from Facebook, which is sucking up more users’ time as the network speeds toward 600 million users worldwide. For some context of where Google could go next, here’s our 2010 best and worst Google product and feature wrap in case you didn’t see it. – …

Google’s Best and Worst Products, Features of 2010

2010 was a banner year for Google in terms of new products and features introduced. The company, which made more than 40 acquisitions to improve products and gain traction in key markets, responded to challenges in search and cloud computing collaboration by Microsoft. Google also accelerated its Android operating system development to keep pace with Apple’s popular iPhone and iPad tablet computers. The Nexus One appeared Jan. 5 and Google never looked back. The company launched its Google Buzz social conversation service the following month as an alternative to Facebook, which this year emerged as the search engine’s greatest threat. While Buzz hasn’t exactly caught on with the majority of Google users, there are plenty of products and tools for the company to hang its hat on and be proud of this year, along with a bomb or two. Here eWEEK outlines Google’s best and worst products and features of 2010. We tried to start with what we perceived as the best, then some middle of the pack items, and finally, the bombs. You wont all agree with us, and you’ll no doubt wonder where Caffeine and other improvements are on this list, but we tried to go with what users have told us and Google’s own reporting about products as the deciding factors for us. Enjoy, and happy New Year. – …
