Albanians submit petition, protest against Marty

A delegation of “organizations of war veterans of the KLA” was in Strasbourg on Tuesday.
They submitted a petition to Council Of Europe (CoE) Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland, which they said contained more than 230,000 signatures collected against the Kosovo human organ trafficking report by CoE Rapporteur Dick Marty.

Albanian opposition calls for new protest

Albanian opposition leader Edvin Rama called on his supporters on Sunday to gather for “a new peaceful protest” on Friday. This would come a week after the clashes between protesters and police in Tirana which claimed three lives.

Slovenia in protest note to Croatia

Slovenia has sent a protest note to Croatia protesting what it sees as prejudging of the sea border between the two countries.
The Croatian national television reported that, according to Croatia’s rulebook, the border is established along the middle of the Bay of Piran, adding, however, that this will only be so until the completion of the demarcation between the two countries.

Hungarians protest against media law

About 10,000 people protested last night in Budapest against the controversial media law which came into effect on January 1.

This is the second such protest in Budapest. The first was held on December 20.

EU “will protest” over Serbia’s excise taxes

The EU might soon strongly protest against the adoption of dual fuel excise taxes in Serbia, Belgrade’s daily Danas writes.

The newspaper adds that excise on imported oil derivatives is higher. Quoting well-informed sources from the Serbian government, Danas writes that European companies are “discriminated by the move”.

K. Albanians protest against Marty’s report

Around 500 ethnic Albanians protested in southern K. Mitrovica on Saturday against the report authored by Council of Europe Special Rapporteur Dick Marty.

No incidents occurred during the protest, which was organized by NGO Rilindia and veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

The Economy Ministry has confirmed that an agreement was reached with the workers of Zastava Automobili car manufacturer.

Hungarian protest against media bill

Several Hungarian newspapers published blank front pages or cartoons yesterday in protest at a bill which they say would restrict media freedom.

The legislation now being debated in parliament would allow the official media watchdog to impose heavy fines on privately run publications.

Protest closes two border crossing

Israel cuts off dialogue with UK over war crimes law

Israel has suspended strategic discussions with Britain in protest of a British law targeting foreigners for arrest on alleged war crimes. Israeli officials announced the action Wednesday, shortly after British Foreign Secretary William Hague arrived in the country for a two-day visit.

Million people protest in France

Violence at protest in Novi Pazar

Several people were injured as Bosniak protesters in Novi Pazar through stones at police officers securing the 1,500 strong protest on Saturday. The general council of the Islamic Community in Serbia, led by Muamer Zukorlić, announced Saturday that the confiscation of a plot of land in Novi Pazar, southwestern Serbia, which was supposedly received as endowment represented a “culmination of violence, discrimination and disrespect for basic Muslim rights,” and demanded a police withdrawal.

NEARLY four years ago, a web-based political movement set itself the modest task of “closing the gap between the world we have and world most people everywhere want”. Calling their group Avaaz, which means “voice” in several languages, the founders aimed to reproduce globally some of the success which their progenitors—like America’s Moveon.org, and Australia’s Getup!—had enjoyed in national political arenas.

By its own lights, the movement, using 14 languages and engaged in a mind-boggling list of causes, has had some spectacular successes. Within the next few months, membership will top 6m. The number of individual actions taken (from bombarding a politician with a well-aimed message, or funding a poster campaign, to helping provide satellite phones to Burmese monks) is estimated at over 23m. Among the recent developments Avaaz claims to have influenced are a new anti-corruption law in Brazil; a move by Britain to create a marine-conservation zone in the Indian Ocean; and the spiking of a proposal to allow more hunting of whales. …

Islamic community protest postponed again

Religious teachers of the Islamic Community in Serbia, led by Muamer Zukorlić, have once against canceled their protest. The rally was planned to take place in front of the government building in Belgrade.
