Overall PC shipments are expected to be up in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to a new report from Gartner. Falling ASPs, however, have market value on the downhill, and the affects of Microsofts Windows 7 operating system likely wont be felt until 2010.

Dell Upbeat for Q4 Potential, While Q3 Profits Fall 54 Percent

Dell executives said they were counting on new business sales of PCs loaded with Windows 7 to boost sales in its fiscal fourth quarter after reporting on Nov. 19 that revenue had fallen 54 percent from the year ago quarter. However one analyst predicted that a PC price war will break out as Dell moves aggressively to win market share away from major competitors, such as Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo.

Microsoft’s earnings are forecast to meet or exceed analyst predictions, but to be lower than the numbers it posted a year ago. In the midst of a global recession, Microsoft has faced declines in revenue from core divisions as the worldwide market for PCs evaporates, and it faces increased competition from Google, Apple and other IT giants. Microsoft is hoping that the refresh of its flagship products, including Windows 7 and Office 2010, will boost its fortunes despite the economic environment.

Sun Expects Q4 Revenue to Be Down by $1 Billion

In what might be its final preliminary report on quarterly financials, Sun Microsystems said it expects revenues for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009 to be down more than $1 billion from a year ago. Erstwhile owner Oracle doesn’t seem worried, saying it expects Sun to add $1.5 billion per year to its own revenues.
