Slayer and Megadeth To Play Classic Albums on Carnage Tours

A HEAVY TIME TRIP BACK TO 1990

Megadeth

Megadeth and Slayer, who last toured the U.S. together nineteen years ago on the “Clash of the Titans” tour, have confirmed that they will each perform, start to finish, their 1990 releases – Slayer’s Seasons In The Abyss and Megadeth’s Rust In Peace – on the upcoming Canadian and American Carnage Tours. The six-date Canadian Carnage kicks off July 23 in Quebec City, while the 19-city American Carnage dates begin August 11 in Glens Falls, NY. With Slayer and Megadeth co-headlining, Testament will be special guest on all dates.

The American Carnage Tour, originally scheduled to take place in January and February, had to be postponed due to Slayer’s vocalist/bassist, Tom Araya’s treatment for severe back pain, an occupational hazard for the rocker who is known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing. A surgical procedure in January corrected the problem once and for all, and he felt better almost immediately.

“Right after the surgery, ” said Araya, “I could tell that the issue was fixed. There’s no more pain; it just feels really good. I’m really excited and I’m anxious to get together with the rest of the guys and start rehearsing again. We cancelled two tours, and I don’t feel great about that, but I couldn’t deal with the pain anymore, and that’s now completely gone. I know the fans are excited to see the band – the tour is on, we’re keeping our word, there will be no more cancellations.”

“If you missed us playing with our friends Slayer back in the 90s, well, here’s your chance to make it up to yourself,” says Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine. “If you miss it this time, well then you ain’t metal anyway!”

Slayer/Megadeth/Testament: Set New Tour Dates

SLAYER, MEGADETH ANNOUNCE NEW, CONFIRMED SCHEDULE FOR
AMERICAN CARNAGE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

Slayer

Slayer and Megadeth are thrilled to announce confirmed routing for the American Carnage North American Tour, which will commence with the rescheduled Canadian Carnage East dates in Quebec City on Friday, July 23.

Slayer will then head to Europe for a run of festival dates, returning to kick off the American Carnage leg in Albany, NY on August 11. American Carnage will play 26 dates across the United States and Eastern Canada up to the Labor Day weekend, ending in Portland, OR on September 4. Testament will be Special Guest on all shows.

Tickets purchased for the American Carnage shows when they first went on sale late last year will be honored for these rescheduled dates. Complete information regarding ticket sales can be found at Slayer’s wesbite, Megadeth’s site and/or Testament’s site.

Due to venue availability and other conflicts, the shows originally scheduled in El Paso, Houston, Nashville, Duluth, and Louisville cannot be rescheduled at this time, and ticket holders may obtain refunds at point of purchase. However, new cities have been added to the American Carnage itinerary, with dates now scheduled in Cleveland, Kansas City, San Diego, and Sacramento. The confirmed, complete itinerary is below.

The American Carnage Tour, originally scheduled to take place in January and February, had to be put on hold due to Slayer’s vocalist/bassist, Tom Araya‘s ongoing, minimally-invasive treatments for what was diagnosed as a Cervical Radiculopathy, an occupational hazard for the rocker who is known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing. Right after the first of the year, Araya made the difficult decision to undergo a surgical procedure, called an Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Fusion, a relatively routine practice with an excellent recovery rate. That surgery took place early last week.

“The doctors said that Tom’s surgery went very smoothly and was a resounding success,” said Rick Sales, long-time Slayer manager. “He’s home now, doing really well, and he said the numbness in his fingers had already diminished considerably.”

Shortly after the surgery, Slayer’s Kerry King received a text from Tom: “Awake and feeling good, actually whatever he did, it feels better.”

The American Carnage Tour will mark the first time that Slayer, Megadeth and Testament will have toured the U.S. together since 1991′s epic Clash of the Titans tour, making this truly a “must-see” event.

Slayer recently announced the rescheduling of its headline tour in the U.K. and Europe, and Megadeth and Testament are currently on tour together playing U.S. cities that will not be on the American Carnage itinerary.

Efterklang: U.S. Tour Dates

Efterklang Announces March U.S. Tour Dates Including SXSW

Efterklang

Efterklang will be hitting our shores in March for select U.S. Tour Dates following the February 23 4AD release of their newest album Magic Chairs, capping the jaunt with dates during this year’s SXSW.

Removing themselves from their home city and heading to Aarhus’ Feedback Recording Studio, the band recorded basic tracks as a band (drums, bass, guitars and piano), replicating the live set-up from where the songs had initially taken form. Later, back in Copenhagen, orchestral flourishes were added and guest musicians were called upon (including their touring band members – Peter Broderick, Heather W. Broderick, Frederik Teige and Daniel James).

For greater clarity of sound, British engineer and producer Gareth Jones (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Depeche Mode, Interpol, Mogwai, Grizzly Bear, Wire and more) was drafted in for mixing duties to work alongside their in-house electronics wizard, Mads Brauer.

Tour Dates:

Gene Ween | 01.16.10 | Philadelphia

Words & Images by: Jake Krolick

Gene Ween :: 01.16.09 :: World Cafe Live :: Philadelphia, PA

Gene Ween :: 01.16 :: Philadelphia

If you’re a Ween fan, then the Gene Ween show at the World Cafe Live would have been your fantasy. Call it what you want, but a slightly grayer haired Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman smiling in his tube socks, playing an acoustic guitar alone onstage was a night of excitement any way you cut it.

Gene’s stripped down takes on some classic Ween fare were just what the good doctor Daniels prescribed. It took a setting like this to help show just why Gene Ween is one of the top songwriters of our time, able to piece together tidbits of odd, funny lyrics into songs that can actually be thoughtful. Plus, kudos to the World Cafe Live for hosting a two-hour pre-show mixer that included an all-you-could-drink selection of 20 micro-brews and Belgian beers, all for a crisp Andrew Jackson ($20). After last year’s Gene Ween Band show (review here), I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who wondered how Gene was doing these days. My questions were answered before the first song was over – he’s looking and sounding better than ever! Sure, he was sporting a rooster’s plume of gray on his head, but his smile was immeasurable as he dusted off almost 20 songs near and dear to the Pennsylvania faithful.

If you didn’t love Gene Ween before you entered the World Cafe, well, you probably didn’t go. However, by the show’s close those that did attend loved him even more. His deconstruction and reworking of Ween standards showed a beautiful, yet still deeply eccentric side to the brown sound storyteller. As he wrapped his lips around “The Chancy Boys,” an oddly tender side of Gene Ween emerged. During a particularly strong cover of Neil Young‘s “I Am A Child” he pulled a clever switch on the lyrics and made Young’s line, “What is the color when black is brown?” This was Gene Ween the folk singer, just your friendly twisted version of Burl Ives and Shel Silverstein.

Gene Ween :: 01.16 :: Philadelphia

He was wonderfully vivid and brought to life Quebec‘s “Chocolate Town” and the younger Ween offering “Spiritwalker” off La Cucaracha. He started some of the songs by explaining their inspiration. He said, “This is a song I wrote at the beach,” before playing “Kite Flying Man.” He paused during the encore, “Buenos Tardes Amigos,” to tell us that the Spanish flavored oddity was created while watching Sesame Street. It was easy to see his role as a father has suited him well and I can’t begin to imagine the wonderful tales and songs he has sung to his children over the past years. The fact that we got a peek at a softer Gene Ween was a real treat.

With Gene’s family watching off on the side of the stage, he played his version of “Don’t Get to Close (To My Fantasy).” This was the turning point of the show as he contorted his face with as much ease as Bruce Bickford molded clay for Frank Zappa. He dug deep as he sang, “Don’t be afraid to clutch the hand of your creator/ Stare into the lion’s eyes/ and if you taste the candy you’ll get to the surprise!” The crowd was entirely with him and sung along as he retooled the track to include some humorous do-do-do’s instead of the whistled breakdown and they were right there helping him scream the end.

Our fascination with the aging troubadour bubbled up all evening in such little exchanges. Between cries of, “I love you, Gener,” the audience questioned his choice of footwear – white tube socks sans shoes? He tossed back, “My mom got these for me,” and “I only sing slow songs in my socks.” At some point after a darling version of “So Long Jerry,” his ode to Jerry Garcia, he misplaced his guitar capo under the music on his stand and the crowd shouted, “Maybe it’s in your socks!” His retort was a beautiful and very Beatles-eque version of The Pod‘s “Oh My Dear (Falling In Love).” Live, he accentuated one of the album’s lo-fi masterpieces in a way no recording can match.

Gene Ween :: 01.16 :: Philadelphia

The evening’s strongest point came during a back to back romp through “The Mollusk” and “Stallion Pt. 3.” Each was superb and made the night for most fans in the house. Gene Ween again deconstructed each song down to its bare bones form. During “The Mollusk,” he let the audience fill in the psychedelic keyboard sounds and electronic horns with their own vocal stylings as he strummed the refrain. He dug into “The Mollusk’s” crafty lyrics by lowering his voice a few octaves and furrowing his brow to sing the chorus before having some fun really dragging out the “Yes/ No” and story portions of the song. This was Gene Ween unbridled; the jester commanding his court with a wild tale of a sea creature stirred from the land. As if this wasn’t enough Boognish bliss he danced through “Stallion Pt. 3,” drawing more audience delight and participation on the “Hey, dude, he’s the stallion/ Yo, dude, he’s the stallion/ Dude, he’s the stallion” portion, where he uncorked his lowest vocal tones of the night.

After a short leave, he stepped back onstage for a one song encore, the aforementioned “Buenos Tardes Amigos,” which culminated in a barrage of socks tossed onto the stage by the crowd to close the show. Gene Ween, the fun-loving showman he is, retaliated by pulling off his own sweaty socks and tossing them into the audience.

Widespread Panic: Fall Tour And Archival Release #4

Widespread Panic: Fall Tour Dates & Archive Release #4

Widespread Panic

Widespread Panic tour dates for November have just been released. This tour finds the band heading out West, the Midwest, and back down to the Southeast. Dates include three-night runs in Los Angeles and Oakland, CA, and Milwaukee, WI.

The band will also release Archive Release #4 – Club Soda, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, September 8, 1997. For this live offering Panic goes north of the border for a gem that not too many people were aware of at the time… or maybe even since. Having played some traditional arenas and stages in the 1990′s, the boys find themselves back where it all began… in a bar. Only this time, it’s in the second largest French-speaking city in the world. Certainly a world away from Athens, GA. From the opening notes of “Heroes” all the way through the four song encore, the crowd makes the boys feel right at home. Whether you were there or have heard it since, you haven’t heard it like this. WP Sound Engineer Chris Rabold has once again dialed in the multi-track mix that puts you right in front of the soundboard and captures the energy that creates this show.

So, take a trip out to LiveWidespreadPanic.com or Widespread Merchandise for the pre-order routine, hang tight until the official release date of 10/6/09 hits and then sit back, relax, and enjoy our road trip to Canada.

Microsoft announces the release of the Windows Embedded Standard 2011 Community Technology Preview, designed for OEMs and developers wanting to port compartmentalized Windows 7 technologies onto specialized devices. Although Windows Embedded Standard 2011 was originally intended for use with Windows Vista, Microsoft seems to have skipped over that operating system entirely in favor of the upcoming Windows 7.
