Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti: Fall Tour Dates w/ Flaming Lips

TOUR DATES WITH THE FLAMING LIPS, PURO INSTINCT AND MAGIC KIDS

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti

Ariel Pink’s
Haunted
Graffiti
‘s 4AD debut record, Before Today, consists of twelve tracks
(including the single “Round And Round”) and was released worldwide on June 8th 2010 on
CD, LP and digital
formats.

Six months in the making, Before Today was recorded in part in Encino at the House
of Blues (once Tito
Jackson’s home studio) with Sunny Levine (Quincy Jones’ grandson) and Rik Pekkonen (Bill
Withers, Seals & Crofts,
Bread) as well as at the band’s home studios. The result is a beguiling mix of glam rock,
West Coast funk and
Merseybeat harmonies with a high-production sheen; a contrast to the corroded bedroom
recordings that have
fomented a fervent cult following over the past decade.

The outfit now consists of reclusive pop surrealist Ariel Pink (vocals) alongside
Tim Koh
(bass/vocals), Kenny Gilmore (guitar/vocals) and Aaron Sperske
(drums/vocals).

Ray Charles: New Jazz Collection

Ray Charles’ Genius + Soul = Jazz is Centerpiece of 2-CD Deluxe Edition
Retrospective of the Artist’s Jazz Recordings of the ’60s and ’70s

Ray Charles

Ray Charles was best known for his work in the idioms of R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and even successful forays into country. But he also recorded influential jazz albums, including the groundbreaking Genius + Soul = Jazz originally released in 1961, and continuing into the ’70s with My Kind of Jazz, Jazz Number II and My Kind of Jazz Part 3. On April 6, 2010, Concord Records will release a deluxe edition two-CD set featuring digitally remastered versions of all four albums including encyclopedic liner notes by Will Friedwald, jazz writer for The Wall Street Journal and author of several books on music and popular culture, along with original liner notes by Dick Katz and Quincy Jones.

Dick Katz wrote in his original January 1961 liner notes, “The combination here of rare talent plus uncommon craftsmanship has produced a record that showcases the timeless quality and innate taste that is uniquely that of Ray Charles.”

Some nine years later, Charles recorded another jazz album, My Kind of Jazz. With sessions in Los Angeles this time, Charles surrounded himself with such players as Bobby Bryant and Blue Mitchell, trumpet; Glen Childress, trombone; Andy Ennis, Albert McQueen and Clifford Scott, saxophone; and Ben Martin, guitar. The album contained Charles’ own “Booty-Butt” (which was issued as a single on his own Tangerine label), Lee Morgan’s “Sidewinder,” and Horace Silver’s “Señor Blues.”

Jazz Number II was recorded roughly two years later at Charles’ Tangerine/RPM Studios, where he enlisted an impressive cast of arrangers: Alf Clausen, Teddy Edwards, Jimmy Heath and Roger Neumann. The tracks included Ray Charles and Roger Neumann’s “Our Suite,” Teddy Edwards’ “Brazilian Skies” and “Going Home,” Thad Jones’ “Kids Are Pretty People” and Jimmy Heath’s “Togetherness.”

My Kind of Jazz Part 3 concludes the Genius + Soul = Jazz deluxe package and was recorded in Los Angeles circa 1975, featured the Ray Charles Orchestra including Clifford Solomon, alto sax; Glen Childress, trombone; Johnny Coles, trumpet; Leroy Cooper, baritone sax; and James Clay, tenor sax. Included are compositions by Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, Jimmy Heath and Benny Golson. Issued on Charles’ own Crossover Records, the album reached #55 on the R&B chart in 1976.

The reissue of Genius + Soul = Jazz continues Concord Music Group’s long-term reissuing of the Ray Charles catalog in cooperation with the Ray Charles Foundation.

Jamie Lidell: New Album w/ Beck, Feist, Griz Bear

JAMIE LIDELL ALBUM COMPASS SET FOR MAY 18, 2010 RELEASE

Jamie Lidell

Warp Records has announced the release of Jamie Lidell‘s third full-length album Compass on May 18, 2010. The album was recorded in Los Angeles, New York and Canada, Jamie’s fellow travelers on Compass include Beck, Feist, Gonzales, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and Pat Sansone of Wilco. Musically and lyrically this is very much a Jamie Lidell production — reflecting not only his exhilarating, diverse tastes, but also a year of change, love, longing and arrival at a new place.

Undoubtedly, Compass is his most eclectic album yet. Songs shift, chop, change and mutate genres and forms before our very ears. It’s got funk in spades; the jaw-dropping power of the vocals is stronger than ever; it rocks, it pops, it’s sweet, angry, hard, soulful and soft, often within the span of a single track. It’s the restless album that finally matches the soul of its creator.

Sessions began at Beck’s Hudson Studios in Los Angeles, where he gathered Jamie together with Wilco, Leslie Feist and veteran drummer James Gadson (who’s hit sticks for Bill Withers, Quincy Jones among many others) for Beck’s Record Club project (where a group of musicians cover an album in a day). Inspired by the chemistry of those jams, they shifted to the legendary Ocean Way Studios. There, they were joined by producer/keyboardist Brian Lebarton, singer Nikka Costa and Justin Stanley. All would have an important impact on the album. Pat Sansone from Wilco and Chilly Gonzales (who s played on both Multiply and Jim) were present as musical meta-spirits, recording their parts remotely and delivering them via the internet. As Jamie says of this formidable lineup of brilliant collaborators — You don’t fuck with them!

Back in New York he began to make sense of this great big mess on the hard drive. Then it was up to Feist’s ranch in the Niagara Escarpment with Chris Taylor, producer and member of Brooklyn avant-pop sensations Grizzly Bear.

“I wrote every song in a month,” Jamie says, “It’s been an emotional couple of years, so I tapped into what I wanted to say and started writing. There was a lot to draw on.” When he takes to the road in 2010, he’ll be bringing a band again, but stripping it back; keeping it lean. For both newcomers and initiates, this will be an experience. And no, he won’t stop.

The event is an official Green Festival SF After-Dark event at the renowned Regency Ballroom on Saturday, November 14, 2009.

Hamsa Lila blew up the West Coast world music scene with their hypnotic world fusion sounds back in 2004, when their album Gathering One went to number two on both U.S. and Canadian world music charts. Their infusion of West and North African influences, and multi-lingual, trance-inducing songs had crowds dancing like never before at festivals like Earthdance, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, and High Sierra Music Festival, as well as packing concert venues like The Fillmore and The Independent. Hamsa Lila’s unique blend of traditional instruments and influences along with modern electronic elements brought them international acclaim as a pioneering band in the world fusion genre, who’s membership have played with the likes of Paul Simon, Sting, Michael Franti, Ozomatli, Hugh Masekela, Mickey Hart, and many others.

The Brazilian musical legend Airto Moreira will be heralded as the super-star special guest, leading a group of world drum masters (TBA) in a rhythmic ceremony to kick off the evening, and then performing alongside Hamsa Lila throughout their set. Airto is a multi-instrumentalist/percussionist who has worked with some of the world’s all time greats like Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Santana, Paul Simon, Smashing Pumpkins, Chick Corea, and a host of others. He’s recorded numerous albums over a stellar career that spans four decades, and his recent release entitled Life After That (Narada – Virgin/EMI) has helped to win him the title as the best jazz/fusion percussionist of 2009 by DRUM! magazine.

Common Vision is a 501 (c) 3 organization that works with inner city schools planting fruit trees, traveling throughout California in bio-diesel powered coach buses and teaching young people about growing food and taking care of the Earth. To date the organization has worked with over 50,000 kids, and planted tens of thousands of fruit trees all over the state. Learn More about Common Vision here.

This special evening will be packed with guests, including Bill Rasaki, King Sunny Ade’s Master Talking drummer for 25 years. Rasaki will be performing an opening set with Airto called Planetary Pulse. Additional Master Drummers will be announced soon.

Other acts to perform include Lynx & Janover, DJ Jef Stott (6 Degrees), and DJ Dragonfly.
