DBSâ€™ Islamic bank says CEO quits; no Dubai World link

Islamic Bank of Asia (IBA), a unit of Southeast Asia’s largest bank DBS Group (DBSM.SI), said on Thursday it was committed to growing its Islamic banking business after confirming the resignation of its chief executive.

“We confirm that Vince Cook, CEO of Islamic Bank of Asia, has resigned from the bank for personal reasons. His last day is Dec 18, 2009,” an IBA spokeswoman said in response to a Reuters query.

“IBA has no exposure to Dubai World and Nakheel, and the shareholders remain committed to growing the business,” she added.

A big AIDS-vaccine trial reports encouraging results

SOME good news about AIDS. After more than two decades of research those labouring to find a vaccine against HIV, the virus that causes the disease, have found a method that might actually work.

This method, known as “prime-boost”, has been tested on more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand. The volunteers were drawn from the general public, rather than specifically from groups at particular risk such as gay men, recreational-drug injectors or prostitutes.
