HP’s Slate 500 Tablet Takes Aim at Business Professionals
Hewlett-Packard first demonstrated its new Slate 500 tablet computer in January at CES in Las Vegas. Now, after a series of development fits and starts, you can finally buy one just in time for the holidays. Hewlett-Packard says this 6-inch-by-9-inch touch-screen device is not a direct competitor to the Apple iPad and that it wants to position it as primarily a business tool. The company may be making the right call overall. But the market will ultimately determine who buys what and for what purpose. "You won’t be able to buy this at retail," HP Personal Systems Group Public Relations Manager Mike Hockey told eWEEK. "We’re making it available strictly on our Website, because we’re looking at it as a business-type device." HP contends that the Slate 500 is a tablet computer that can do anything a regular PC can do, since it comes installed with the professional version of Windows 7 and has the look and feel of a regular PC. This slide show offers a close-up look at the first touch-screen tablet produced by the world’s largest IT company. – …

STI likely higher on US lead; M1 in focus
Singapore shares likely to rise, tracking gains across regional bourses after DJIA ends at highest level since May 3, helped by upbeat earnings from Citigroup; that actual earnings results fuelled buying interest, rather than Fed easing hopes, also viewed as positive, says Dow Jones.
"The quantitative easing story has had a good run, and now people will want to look at earnings, both here and in the US for more reasons to buy," says a dealer at local brokerage.

Yahoo, Novell, Sprint, Motorola Execs Overpaid: Report
Yahoo, Novell, Sprint and Motorola are some of the tech companies that topped research firm Glass Lewis & Co.’s 2010 "Pay Dirt" report& for overpaying their executives relative to company performance. The report’s "Overpaid 25" lists companies whose "compensation programs and policies& have failed to effectively link executive pay with company performance." In other words, executives who earned millions while their units failed to perform, or their stock price dipped. "Glass Lewis believes that year-after-year underperformance warrants significant action in order to rectify the issues that are plaguing the company and contributing to its lackluster performance," reads the report. However, some of the "Overpaid 25" companies have appeared on that list in previous years. Although its revenue numbers continue to be robust, Oracle was cited by the report as a company whose executives receive particularly high compensation. Glass Lewis also included an "Underpaid 25" list, whose executives receive minimal compensation relative to their companies’ robust performances. Those executives included Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos. Overall, though, technology companies constituted a small percentage of both lists. – …

Nokia N8 Is ‘Beefy’ with Moments of ‘Genius’ Design: iFixit
The Nokia N8 smartphone, which began shipping Sept. 30, is the latest victim of a teardown by iFixit. The repair site’s team went to work with its Torx screwdriver to offer a look inside Nokia’s new flagship smartphone. In all, the iFixit team gave the N8 high marks. They were impressed with several design decisions, including Nokia’s "creative" placement of the device’s antennas (you may recall, creative antenna placement got Apple into trouble with the iPhone 4) and its EMI (electromagnetic interference) shields, which protect the phone’s chips from interference. The N8′s 12-megapixel camera, which Nokia paired with the type of flash normally found in a full-size camera, also impressed. Shipping unattached to a carrier, and so without the obligation of a service contract, the N8& which runs the new Symbian 3 OS& is priced at approximately $500. "Betting the farm on the success of the N8," iFixit reported on its site, "Nokia has packed this phone full of awesome features." (All photos are courtesy of iFixit.com.) – …
HTC, Dell, Samsung, LG Show Off Windows Phone 7 Devices
Microsoft launched its Windows Phone 7 smartphones with a New York City event Oct. 11. During the company’s presentation, CEO Steve Ballmer and other executives detailed Windows Phone 7′s user interface, which consolidates Web content and applications into six subject-specific "Hubs" such as "Office" and "Games." Microsoft hopes that the phones’ uniqueness will stand it apart& and allow it to take back market share& from competitors such as the Apple iPhone and Google Android. Microsoft and its manufacturing partners also demonstrated some of the first smartphones for the platform. While Microsoft tried to keep those manufacturers to rigid hardware requirements, some of the devices on display included additional features& including pop-out speakers and QWERTY keyboards& that suggest those partners decided to do a little tweaking of their own. Devices from Samsung, LG Electronics and HTC will debut on AT&T’s network starting Nov. 8, to be followed by others in the months afterward. Phones on Verizon’s network are expected in early 2011. – …
Lucasfilm to build studio in Singapore
Star Wars creator Lucasfilm will soon start construction of its first purpose-built overseas production facility in Singapore, the US movie and animation giant said on Tuesday, according to AFP.
The eight-storey, 409,000 square-foot studio complex will be located in a technology hub known as Fusionopolis and contain a data centre, a 100-seat theatre and retail outlets.
Lucasfilm, the hit-making vehicle of director George Lucas, set up operations at rented offices near Changi Airport in 2005 and now has 400 international staff in Singapore.
The new building will be ready for staff by 2012 and will house Lucasfilm Singapore’s three local divisions –special effects firm Industrial Light and Magic, game developer Lucasarts and Lucasfilm Animation.
"Our teams on both sides of the world – in the US and in Singapore – continue to thrive," said Micheline Chau, president and chief operating officer of Lucasfilm.
"We’re immensely proud of the amazing work that continues to come out of the Singapore studio and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by giving them a permanent, state-of-the-art, collaborative work environment to call home."
The Singapore team currently produces the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" as well as the Nintendo DS game "Jedi Alliance."
A fact sheet provided by Lucasfilm said Singapore staff have worked on special effects and animation for Hollywood hits such as the "Transformers" franchise, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and "Iron Man 2".
Lucasfilm Singapore is also working with "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski on "Rango", a fully-animated film about a chameleon forced to live his dreams of being a swashbuckling hero in a bandit-infested cowboy town.
The film will be released in 2011, with "Pirates" lead Johnny Depp voicing the main character.

Windows Phone 7 Will Lack Flash, Multitasking, CDMA at Launch
Windows Phone 7 represents Microsoft’s next best hope for regaining its market share in the highly competitive smartphone space, after several quarters of decline in the face of fierce competition from the likes of the Apple iPhone and Google Android. Windows Phone 7 takes a different approach than those platforms, consolidating its Web apps and content into a series of subject-specific "Hubs" such as "Office" and "People." Microsoft will launch Windows Phone 7 during an Oct. 11 event in New York City. Once the first smartphones with Windows Phone 7 hit the street in coming weeks, users will immediately notice the platform lacks some key features. Among them: Adobe Flash support, a cut-and-paste function, tethering and multitasking. Microsoft has promised that some of these will come later. Along with those, however, Microsoft has also cut some regularly complaint-worthy features that had lingered in its Mobile versions: With the new, user-friendly touch interface, say hello to no more stylus. Microsoft hopes that, certain lacking features aside, users will attach to the early version of Windows Phone 7 and allow the company to again make headway in the mobile space. – …
eWEEK Newsbreak Video Oct 5 2010
Verizon Wireless overcharged approximately 15 million customers for data services they didnt use and now will begin refunding them. Individual refunds are in the range of $2 to $6, but while that doesnt sound like much, The New York Times estimates the total damage to Verizon to be between $30 million and $90 million; After more than a year of discussion, Cisco officials are reportedly about to release a home video communication device, putting it into competition with Skype and others.
<p>The much – anticipated home TelePresence offering, is reported to be announced this week; So those of you anxious for Microsoft to finally join the smartphone party – your wait may soon be over. Microsoft is betting that the smartphone’s unique user interface – as it aggregates Web content and apps into a series of subject – specific "Hubs," such as "Office" and "Games," instead of the iPhone’s or Android’s gridlike pages of individual apps – will allow it to regain market share traction against those competitors; Microsoft announced Oct. 1st that it had filed a patent – infringement lawsuit against Motorola over the Google Android smartphones. The lawsuit suggests that Microsoft is becoming more aggressive about its patents with manufacturers of Android phones. In April, HTC acknowledged it would pay royalties to Microsoft in exchange for the use of "patented technology" in its Android – powered devices.
