Ray LaMontagne: Like Rock & Roll And Radio

By: Dennis Cook

Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs

It’s always heartening when an artist opens an album with something that feels new, even as it gives us that hit of the familiar. God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise (released August 17 on RCA), the fourth long-player from Ray LaMontagne, begins with “Repo Man,” a bumptious rocker with tangible groove & growl. This is not the teary-eyed, sensitive singer-songwriter that’s sadly become LaMontagne’s soundbite, but it is part of a complex artist who keeps moving past preconceptions with each successive release.

“It’s funny how the initial round of press has such staying power. It’s maddening for me,” observes LaMontagne. “This whole impression that I’m introverted to level of autism is so completely untrue. Writers will come to shows and build on that constantly. It’s very frustrating. I guess if you’re not swinging a guitar over your back and pointing & smiling at people in the audience, then somehow you don’t want to be there. That’s just not the case. I immerse myself in the music and the musicians I’m playing with. Obviously, if I didn’t want to be doing this I wouldn’t. I love making records and playing live, and I feel really lucky to be able to do both. But those early impressions sure stick around.”

For the first time on an album, LaMontagne shares top billing with his band, a stunning, critic sanctioned ensemble which includes top-gun guitar/stringed-things players Eric Heywood and Greg Leisz, as well as touring keyboardist Patrick Warren, an under-sung ace who’s worked with Michael Penn & Aimee Mann for years. The name of LaMontagne’s band, The Pariah Dogs, conveys a lot in a few words – a sense of foreboding, perhaps something apocalyptic – and finds its origins in India, where it refers to packs of feral hounds. “I just liked the sound of it,” says LaMontagne. “It rolls off the tongue.”

The core of the band has played together for years, but very rarely all together at once. The rhythm section of Jay Bellerose (drums) and Jennifer Condos (bass) have been with LaMontagne off & on since his second album, Till The Sun Turns Black.

“We’re all really close as friends but also I think we just communicate really well,” offers LaMontagne. “They’re all so great just as human beings, and as musicians they all have such unique voices. No one plays like Greg and the same goes for Jen and Jay. They all have such beautiful, individual voices. For people that really listen, these guys are insane. It’s a dream for me to play with these guys and get them on the record.”

LaMontagne’s music lends itself to this sort of empathetic, aware musicianship, where the subtlety of various components matters, small, intelligent choices adding the necessary texture and wow to his carefully honed compositions and thoughtful vocal style. And the shared intuition of this group also filters into their renditions of LaMontagne’s earlier catalog, which continues to evolve in their care as they’ve toured worldwide this year.

New Album

“I kind of live it and breath it, so I can’t really see the changes. It just happens naturally. I don’t consciously think about it. We just play the songs,” says LaMontagne. “Dylan, I guess, is kind of a grotesque extreme to this idea [of song evolution]. If you see him now, the melodies to the early songs have just sort of disappeared. It’s really bizarre. That’s just drastic and not enjoyable for the listener. You have to remember there’s a listener on the other side, and they want to hear something familiar, a melody that’s familiar. As a vocalist, I want it to be fresh for myself. I try to approach it and sing it effectively every night. You don’t want to change it up so much that people don’t recognize it or enjoy it anymore.”

Melody is central to LaMontagne’s work, something evident in the more meditative pieces on God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise. His songs linger, even the sad ones, because they provide a tuneful companion. Where some songs bum-rush one, LaMontagne’s saunter in and take a seat nearby and wait for us to join them.

“That’s what I love about songs, and I’m always trying to get better at it. I’m always trying to open myself up more when a song comes knocking, to be patient with it and allow the melody to reveal itself. And even in the revision process, I strive to be open to hearing what it wants to be,” says LaMontagne. “Songs reveal themselves to you. You can’t sit down and make a song happen. If you do that, the song is going to suck.”

“I have good instincts about, well, everything, I think, just in life. I’m not saying that in an egotistical way. I’ve just found that to be the case in my life,” says LaMontagne, whose music requires listeners to focus and open up if they’re to fully experience it. Sure, his music could be background noise at a Starbuck’s but that’s not why it was created. “I’m proud of that. That’s what I love about music. That’s what the albums that mean the most to me, and most great albums, are about – listening. You’ve got to spend time with them and get to know them if you want to hear the nuances.”

Ray LaMontagne by Adam McCullough

“To take my own stuff, on my new record there’s a song called ‘New York City’s Killing Me,’ and you can hear Eric working out his part. He did it so quick, and the whole record was done so quickly. What you’re hearing are really instantaneous responses to the material, which the band hadn’t heard prior to the sessions. We recorded it in five days, which meant two tracks per day,” says LaMontagne. “It made me realize just how amazing these guys are. I always knew they were incredible but then when I listened to the album, knowing they’d just heard these songs, maybe in the car about an hour and a half before the take, it’s pretty astounding. By the last chorus of ‘New York City’s Killing Me,’ he gets a little melodic hook he plays on pedal steel. If there were a quote/unquote producer in the room besides me, they would have undoubtedly made us do it again and had Eric play that hook throughout the song. What I love about it is how you can hear him finding that hook.”

Moments like this – which can’t be premeditated but are happily captured for perpetuity – are often the cores of great albums. Happenstance and lightning inspiration should never be discounted, something LaMontagne understands full well.

“For the near future at least, it’s how I plan to make albums,” says LaMontagne. “The control freak in me likes to be in control [laughs]. I certainly wouldn’t rule out working with a producer, but it would have to be an inspired thing. I’d have to go in feeling it was gonna work. Like I said, I have good instincts and I trust myself. Right now, [self-producing my latest album] was an important step for me, to make a record in my own space. I don’t really have a studio. I just have a big, beautiful room that’s just amazing. And Ryan Freeland (Aimee Mann, Crowded House, Son Volt) brought his remote gear in and expertly engineered the sessions. He’s got this great rig with all these tube amps. All he’d seen was some photographs of the space and he just rolled in and made it look really effortless. He was set up in a few hours and immediately started getting beautiful sounds.”

In many respects, God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise is Ray LaMontagne’s most unforced song cycle. This is simply the next chapter in the story of a serious singer, songwriter and musician smart enough to surround himself with the best players around and then let nature take its course. While the gentle sway of “Are We Really Through” and “For The Summer” will appeal to fans still hoping he’ll remake Trouble one day, but more open-minded ears will find a good deal of bounce in cuts like “Like Rock & Roll And Radio” and “Devil’s In The Jukebox.” LaMontagne’s empathy for his fellow humans remains strong, but it’s now joined by a sly caustic edge that’s terrific and just as human as all the sighs and handholding that’s made him so beloved. In short, today’s Ray LaMontagne is more well rounded than ever and the music’s nothing but better for it.

Zac Brown Band: Play The Road

By: Dennis Cook

Zac Brown Band

Success often makes new listeners wary of a band. Too many hits too fast and one may wonder if an artist is a flash in the pan and unworthy of a serious music fan’s attention. However, sometimes a truly talented, hard working group breaks through and the world is simply wise enough – for a rare change – to recognize a good thing when it lands in their lap.

In 2008 it seemed the Zac Brown Band came out of nowhere to pulverize the country charts, racking up four number one singles and double platinum album sales for what many thought was their debut, The Foundation. But, two self-released albums preceded this first major label release, along with a tour schedule that had kept the band away from home for as many as 200 gigs a year since 2002. All that wood shedding and club humping rings out in the confidence and craftsmanship of The Foundation, and the past two years where they’ve become a major headlining draw and a fixture on CMT and country radio shows in the utterly confident, absolutely winning follow-up You Get What You Give (released September 21 on Southern Ground/Atlantic), which opens with a scene full of hippie-esque wisdom played out over chord-skipping acoustic guitar and playful fiddle that ride a shuffling beat.

Spent the night with a friend of mine and a handle of good whiskey
Picked guitars and talked about how the glory days went missing
It didn’t take too long to find the truth inside that bottle
Cast a-sea so long ago was a message from my father

You keep your heart above your head and your eyes wide open
So this world can’t find a way to leave you cold
No, you’re not the only ship out on the ocean
Save your strength for things that you can change
Forget the ones you can’t
You got to let it go

You Get What You Give is a record with a huge potential audience, not just the country establishment that’s already embraced them. Within this talented bunch lays many points of connection for jam band aficionados (high level musicianship, broad cover tune sensibilities, a 420-friendly attitude, shifting setlists), Americana purists (dead solid songwriting, twang that’s stretched into interesting new forms) and straight-up mainstream rock fans.

ZBB @ Bonnaroo ’09 by Dave Vann

“We realize that country radio and TV is the way they’re selling this music and the way we’re connecting with our fans but only during 4 or 5 songs in our live set do we even think we’re a country band,” says multi-instrumentalist Clay Cook. “I think we’re more concerned with songs than genre. Sure, we’re telling stories in our songs but it’s more of a southern approach than a strict country one.”

Like the best southern bands in the modern era, ZBB scoops up a wide array of influences and gives them a below-the-Mason-Dixon accent. Ronnie Van Zant-era Skynyrd did this well, as do contemporaries like JJ Grey & Mofro and Hill Country Revue, both of whom have more in common with the Zac Brown Band’s general vibe than most of what’s coming out of Nashville today. At the core of this group is one of the strongest emerging songwriting teams out there, namely Zac Brown and lyricist Wyatt Durrette, who possess a Tom Petty-like populist feel that’s VERY hard to resist.

“The way Zac approaches performing songs is so much different than anything I’ve been involved with before. You just really believe every word he says with the way he sings it,” says Cook. “I feel very lucky to be where I am in this band, especially because of the way we connect with audiences, and that stems from Zac.”

The band doesn’t hesitate to place their originals next some of the finest songwriting of the past 50 years, regularly covering tunes from The Band, Bob Marley, Van Morrison, Ray LaMontagne and other heavy hitters, with the company they keep reflecting the larger ambitions of the band. One also sees this in the high powered patronage of certifiable icons like Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews and Kid Rock, who’ve taken the band under their wing and welcomed them as openers and kindred spirits.

“When we’re picking covers we pick things we want to play, the songs we’re listening to on our iPods. This is the music we love. It’s stuff we’re intimately familiar with and huge fans of. We feel like it’s our duty to do a good job,” says Cook. “We’ve been playing Bob Dylan’s ‘I Shall Be Released,’ and I can’t tell you how many other versions are out there. But when we get onstage to play that song, I feel like we’re only the second or third band to ever attempt it, just by how we love it SO much. It’s a weird feeling, but we think we do that with certain songs, really live inside them and make them somewhat our own. Otherwise, we’ll play a song once and never again.”

Zac Brown Band

On the Deluxe Edition of You Get What You Give, they do a fantastic cover of Ryan Adams’ “Oh My Sweet Carolina” (off Ryan’s solo debut Heartbreaker).

“It’s a live version and we did it in Louisville. And it was one of those situations where everyone felt so good about it, even though it was only the second or third time we’d attempted it in two or three years,” says Cook. “The only reason we played it in Louisville is it’s got a line that goes, ‘I miss Kentucky and I miss my family.’ Zac said, ‘Let’s just play this one!’ and we did and it was just beautiful. We had somebody mix it and throw it on the Deluxe Edition.”

The band mixes up their song selections nightly very much in the spirit of the never-repeat-yourself ethos of the jam scene.

“We kinda have to but the lighting and video guys really wish we’d stick to the same setlist [laughs]. But if we did the same setlist three nights in a row, by the third night we’d be fit to be tied. We’d be ready to do something different or even change [the arrangements of] songs up if we couldn’t change the setlist, changing up sections of songs as we’re playing them,” says Cook. “It forces you to be creative in different ways. We’ve had to feed from our record that’s been out there for a while. It’s been two years since The Foundation came out, and we have to play stuff from it because that’s why people bought tickets to see us. At least half the people in the audience have never seen us before and don’t know they’re going to see a real live show. And then hopefully the other half of the show is new stuff and covers. Unless we have three hours to play, we really have a hard time boiling down what we want to play every night.”

“At this point, we have six songs that are singles and that’s half an hour already. You have to play those songs. Then you have a few covers you’ve been playing that are working, so you have to play those because if we feel good about them at the moment we want to capitalize on that feeling. And the next time we come around [to a city] we’ll have a whole new set of covers. Then you want to play the stuff off the new record, and we also have special guests on this tour. Like Robert Randolph is opening for us, so we want to play a song with him. So, pretty soon the two-and-a-half-hours for our setlist is pretty full. It’s actually easier to write a three-hour setlist than a two-hour setlist.”

Zac Brown @ Bonnaroo ’09 by Dave Vann

“A pop artist just wants to play their hits and get off the stage. They want to play a 90-minute set and anything more than that is unbearable to them. I remember talking to this country group Lady Antebellum, who came up to us at one of the awards shows. They just released their second album earlier this year, and they heard we were playing three and four hour shows and said, ‘Why are you doing this to us?’ They’ve only got about 90-minutes of material without covers, and that’s only if they play everything off both records. I said, ‘Well, we’re not a country band.’ We’re a live experience mainly.”

One area they excel at, live and in the studio, is in their rich harmonies. The overlap of voices, not just Brown’s own powerful, flexible pipes, is a lovely alternative to the Clean Room pristine quality of most of today’s auto-tuned, Pro-Tools enhanced “singing.”

“When they did the harmonies on the previous record [before Clay Cook joined ZBB], they had to work really hard on the vocals. And that record was cut almost four years ago with two of the vocalists that are here now and one that’s gone. Now, we sing SO much that I don’t think it took two days to get the background harmonies on [You Get What You Give]. We were just knocking them out. It was almost comical at one point when we realized that a great deal of these harmonies were done in one take,” says Cook. “We didn’t spend a lot of time in the studio tracking [anything on the new record]. A lot of the time spent was between gigs, where we’d go a month without doing anything because we’d be on the road. When we were off the road everybody wanted to go home for two or three days, so we couldn’t jump right back into the studio. And then we were on the road again!”

“We’ve taken measures to fix that on the next record. We’re building a studio in Zac’s backyard,” reveals Cook. “I think we’re gonna try to do this next record live, the solos and everything except maybe the vocals. We care a lot about the vocals and it’d suck to get all the way through an awesome take as a band and discover that two of the vocalists were a little bit off. At worst, we’ll record the entire band live and go back and capture the vocals, OR we’ll be just as gutsy as I hope we’ll be and just capture EVERYTHING live in the studio.”

Perhaps the best way to think of the Zac Brown Band is as the next generation of Great American Music bands in the spirit of the Grateful Dead, Little Feat and Goose Creek Symphony, where the inflection of their music can lean one way or another but the language they’re ultimately speaking is their own. What separates Zac Brown and his collaborators from these ancestors is an almost unerring knack for sinking deep into the pop vernacular. Spin You Get What You Give for almost anyone, regardless of their primary listening habits, and by the last track there’s bound to be one or more cuts that float their boat. It’s a broad, readily appealing reach that hints at a future cult following the likes of which Buffett, Rock and the Dave Matthews Band enjoy.

“Elvis Costello With…” Bono, Toussaint, The Boss, More

BONO, ALLEN TOUSSAINT, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AMONG GUESTS IN SEASON TWO OF
SUNDANCE CHANNEL’S “SPECTACLE: ELVIS COSTELLO WITH…”

Elvis Costello

Sundance Channel will launch the second season of its critically acclaimed music/talk original series “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 10:00 p.m. et/pt with an episode featuring U2‘s Bono and The Edge. “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” combines the best elements of talk and music television and lets viewers in on intimate conversation and performances with host Costello and his guests, who range from legendary performers to promising new artists.

The series, executive produced by Sir Elton John, includes one-on-one interviews, unprecedented pairings and group discussions, as well as extraordinary performances, from impromptu “illustrative” moments to full band (and even multi-band) productions. Among the confirmed guests for the seven-part season are: Bono, The Edge, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, John Prine, Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case, Jesse Winchester, Ray LaMontagne, Nick Lowe, Levon Helm, Richard Thompson, and Allen Toussaint.

“We’re thrilled to launch a second season of ‘Spectacle’ on Sundance Channel,” said Sundance Channel EVP and GM, Sarah Barnett. “The series offers viewers unusually close access to artists through its mix of candid conversations and exciting musical performances. This season’s A-list lineup is a testament to the tremendous respect that artists feel for Elvis Costello as a musician and entertainer.”

“I am delighted that we can continue where we left off–making intelligent, and informative music programming,” said Sir Elton John, one of the series’ executive producers. Elvis Costello commented: “In the words of the great Joe Strummer, ‘Let’s rock again!’”

The program’s eclecticism and depth reflect its uniquely qualified host. Costello is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee; a Grammy and Ivor Novello Award-winning (and Oscar®-nominated) songwriter and performer comfortable in almost every genre imaginable; a musicologist of formidable breadth and knowledge; a contributor to Vanity Fair magazine; and a noted wit whose stint as guest host on The Late Show with David Letterman won rave reviews.

“Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” is taped in front of a live audience at Harlem’s world famous Apollo Theater in New York City and The Masonic Temple in Toronto, Canada. The series will also air on CTV in Canada.

Lissie: Dates/New EP Out Now

LISSIE: WHY YOU RUNNIN’ EP IN STORES NOW
On Tour With Ray LaMontagne, New Dates With A.A. Bondy Announced

Lissie

Lissie‘s EP Why You Runnin’ arrived in stores via Fat Possum Records last week. With her powerful, achingly evocative voice and mix of haunting and spirited, always soulful songs, the EP has been climbing the iTunes charts (a recent #1 rank for singer/songwriter albums) as early praise has begun to roll in. In advance of her headlining show at the Mercury Lounge in New York City this past Monday, Time Out New York offered: “…Lissie takes on Americana with a cool, breezy vibe and a strong voice… get to the Merc tonight to see what all the fuss is about.” Reviewing the show, Blender.com remarked, “her throat’s power seemed to almost knock the walls down… Lissie was dynamic with her entire body, putting tremendous energy out, and it showed. An excellent introduction to New York.”

Radio is also already responding to Why You Runnin’, with Lissie recently taping performances for WXPN’s World Cafe Live (Philadelphia, PA) – which will air January 19, 2010 – as well as WFUV (New York, NY; air date TBA). She is also confirmed for an in-studio performance at influential station KCMP’s The Current (Minneapolis, MN), in addition to an upcoming KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic performance on November 24.

Recently, AOL Music’s Spinner blog featured Lissie’s stirring new single, “Everywhere I Go,” as their Free MP3 of the Day. Spinner will also be streaming Why You Runnin’ in its entirety throughout the week here. Last month, My Old Kentucky Blog premiered the EP’s first single “Little Lovin’”, a track which moved TheFader.com to write, “…her spirit is all purple mountains majesty, pure and regal, a true Americana singer, conduit of the land…the richness of her voice never wavers.”

Additionally, Lissie – who is currently opening for Ray LaMontagne on select dates – has now announced two new tour dates in support of label mate A.A. Bondy later this month in Omaha, NE and Columbia, MO. She is also set to headline her own KCRW-presented show at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles, CA on November 24.

The Low Anthem Tour Dates

LOW ANTHEM CONTINUE WORLD TOUR WITH WEST COAST DEBUT, DATES WITH BLIND PILOT

The Low Anthem

It’s been a banner year for The Low Anthem. In addition to being JamBase’s New Favorite Artist this month, the Rhode Island trio spent the greater part of the year touring with acts such as Elvis Perkins In Dearland, Joe Pug, Ray LaMontagne, Josh Ritter, and Langhorne Slim in support of their highly praised Nonesuch debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, the band is gearing up for yet another stretch on the road, this time with the Portland group Blind Pilot. This run of 21 club and theater dates begins October 15 and continues through November 12 and includes the band’s West coast debut. Additionally, The Low Anthem will return to NYC for a performance at the Bell House at the end of August and travel to Europe for a month-long tour in September, where they’ve already played to much enthusiasm at Glastonbury, sold out a show at Union Chapel in London, and received stellar reviews in Uncut, Q, Mojo, NME, The Guardian, and The Independent.

The very special Avon Cinema in Providence, RI is hosting the first October U.S. tour date. The Cinema is a beautiful old movie theatre, the perfect setting for the band’s anticipated homecoming show and largest performance in Providence to date. The band will also be playing a free show on Block Island, where they recorded Charlie Darwin.

This time around they got to share the stage with some of their heroes, including Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, and Gilian Welch during a group sing-along.

THE LOW ANTHEM PRESS:

“Only a band since 2006, the depth of songwriting and ability to cross the dusty Americana landscape from such burdened acoustic folk songs like “To Ohio” to country barnburners, delicate three-part harmonies dripping with reverb, a Tom Waits cover, and soul-saving gospel without loosing continuity makes The Low Anthem worthy of all the hype they are sure to receive…” – JamBase

This will not be the first time LaMontagne has played accompanied by an orchestra; he recently appeared in front of a sold-out crowd earlier in July at the Hollywood Bowl with the Bowl’s Orchestra.

The tour marks LaMontagne’s third tour in North America in support of his top 5 album Gossip In The Grain. Along the way he has also done a tour of the biggest shows on TV including Saturday Night Live, The Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and most recently The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson. While in L.A. for the Hollywood Bowl, LaMontagne stopped by KCRW’s highly influential “Morning Becomes Eclectic” where he performed and chatted.
