Samsung Continuum Android Smartphone Offers Ticker Display, Real-Time News

Samsung’s next device in the Galaxy S line of Android-based smartphones, the Continuum, boasts one piece of hardware that differentiates it from its siblings: a 1.8-inch "ticker display" that feeds real-time information on everything from news to e-mails and missed calls. The ticker display can operate independently of the 3.4-inch main display, allowing users to check on the latest sports scores or stock-market crash while toying with an app or answering an e-mail. The Continuum will be available exclusively through Verizon Wireless later in November, for $199.99 with a mail-in rebate. During a Nov. 8 unveiling in New York City, Samsung executives suggested that some 3 million Galaxy S devices had sold in the United States since July. That makes the smartphones& currently offered on Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T& a solid competitor to not only other Google Android devices from rival manufacturers, but also the Apple iPhone. Those executives also touted the Continuum’s ticker display and its ability to feed things like entertainment updates as exactly the sort of competitive differentiator that will appeal to consumers; but only time will determine whether it’s truly a "killer feature" that drives sales. – …

Novell is opening its Novell Pulse collaboration platform for preview March 21 to attendees of its BrainShare conference. Pulse is a Google Wave-like software platform that lets users create documents and co-edit them in real time. Available Feb. 11 in Wowd 2.0, the tag cloud feature is based on hot topics customized to an each Wowd user’s search query, Wowd CEO Mark Drummond told eWEEK. Wowd 2.0 also boasts a new SearchStream feature at the top of the search results. Google unleashes perhaps its most significant search engine enhancements in years, adding real-time search results aggregated from Facebook, Twitter and MySpace and turning on its Google Goggles mobile visual search application in Google Labs. The new technologies come as Google is defending its 65 percent market share from renewed attacks by Microsoft Bing, which thanks to a just-consummated deal with Yahoo will give Microsoft control of almost 30 percent of the search market. Novell Pulse Launches with Google Wave Support for Real-Time Collaboration

Novell launches Pulse, a real-time collaboration platform designed from its inception to work with Google Wave through the platform’s federation protocol. Similar to Wave, Pulse includes instant messaging, live document authoring and editing, and social networking tools. But unlike Wave, Pulse features the security, management and compliance capabilities required by businesses.
