Facebook Offers Real-Time, Highlight Reel News Feed for the Homepage
Facebook Oct. 23 changed its homepage again, offering users a highlight reel view of the most interesting activity that’s happened in the last day and a real-time view that shows users what is happening now. This move takes on an interesting light in the wake of Microsoft’s announcement at Web 2.0 Summit Oct. 21 that Bing would begin serving up public Facebook status updates. Facebook also tweaked the Suggestions section to let users help their friends find their friends, or upload pictures and video. Facebook is also prodding users to help their friends become more active on the site, displaying a progress bar below their profile pictures on their profile.

Microsoft Bing Director Mum on Real-Time Data Deals with Twitter, Facebook
Microsoft Bing Director Stefan Weitz denies knowledge of the data integration deals with Twitter and Facebook his boss is expected to announce at the Web 2.0 Summit Oct. 21. BoomTown’s Kara Swisher reports that Microsoft has struck deals to index real-time status updates from Twitter and Facebook on Bing, and that Qi Lu, president of Microsoft’s Online Services Division, will announce those deals here at the event. Indexing real-time information from Facebook and Twitter could give Bing an advantage over Google, which has been slow to index Twitter tweets and other real-time search info.

Searching Google in Near Real-Time
Ran Geva, CEO of search engine startup Omgili, discovers a neat trick users can do to search Google results within the past minute. It’s not quite real-time search the way Twitter, CrowdEye, Collecta and others do it, but it’s close. The hack is done by changing the time designation in the search results’ URL query data range (QDR) from the past day to the past minute, or even seconds. Yes, even non-geeks can do this. Try it out!
– When Google added
its search options feature in May, the company made it possible for
users to narrow the time parameters of their search down to the past 24
hours.
The blogosphere is abuzz this morning with the discovery of a neat
little hack every user can do to get Google results up to the m…

Innovation@Intel: Real-time Ray Tracing – 3D Water and 3D Display
Last year, Intel and Microsoft funded the establishment of a Universal Parallel Computing Research Center (UPCRC) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with the goal of bringing parallel computing applications to the mainstream. At Research@Intel Day 2009, researchers demonstrated an application that the UPCRC is working on to parallelize attendees to participate in a tele-immersive 3D environment. Participants in two separate spaces engage and interact in a 3D virtual environment to complete tasks or play games such as Tele-Immersive Saber Fencing or Tele-Immersive Jump Rope. For more information, see video from Research@Intel Day 2009.
How to Improve Real-time Document Collaboration
Although real-time document collaboration is necessary in the workplace, it is often difficult to achieve because of the lack of appropriate tools. Effective real-time document collaboration requires immediate and spontaneous group interaction to evoke and refine new ideas. Here, Knowledge Center contributor John Mohan explains why Web meeting tools are not viable solutions for real-time document collaboration, and why a many-to-many architecture solution can better facilitate real-time document collaboration in your organization.
– Collaboration is a vague and all-encompassing term that needs to be further defined for the purpose of this discussion. Before proceeding, I would like to replace collaboration with the term, document collaboration, which is defined as the ability to present or share documents in real time while sim…

Innovation@Intel: Real-time Ray Tracing: 3D Water and 3D Display
With the power of upcoming many-core architectures Intel is developing, real-time ray tracing (using the physics of light to realistically render an interactive 3D scene) comes closer and closer to the desktop. At Research@Intel Day 2009, Intel researchers showcased the latest innovations from our Real-time Ray Tracing project, including more realistic 3D water and the ability to render more than 500 animated characters at once, and showed a version rendering multiple camera views on a stereoscopic display, in which viewers can see the 3D depth of the scene without the need for special glasses. See video from Research@Intel Day 2009 for more info.
