Singapore economy may fall into technical recession: Update

Singapore said its economy could experience a technical recession in the second half of 2010 even as the island remains “on track” for an expansion of 13% to 15% for the full year.

Singapore’s economy will moderate in the second half of 2010 and next year, S. Iswaran, senior minister of state for trade and industry, said in parliament today. A technical recession is two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.

Singapore could be in recession in 2H

Singapore could see a technical recession in the second half of 2010 as the global economic recovery remains subdued and planned drug plant shutdowns could hurt the manufacturing sector, the government said on Monday.

The government also said it was closely monitoring local property prices to ensure no bubble was formed.

Singapore could experience technical recession, Iswaran says

Singapore’s economy could experience a technical recession in the second half of 2010 even as the island remains on track for an expansion of 13% to 15% for the full year, S. Iswaran, senior minister of state for trade and industry, said in parliament in Singapore today.

Global growth will be subdued and Singapore’s economy will moderate in the second half of 2010 and next year, he said. A technical recession is two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.

GIC says world may see recession sooner than expected: Update

The global rebound is “fragile” and shocks could push the world toward another recession, according to Government of Singapore Investment Corp., manager of more than US$100 billion ($137 billion) of the nation’s foreign reserves.

Risks to the global recovery have increased due to Europe’s debt turmoil, continued deleveraging in the US and protectionist pressures, Tony Tan, deputy chairman of GIC, said in a speech in Singapore today. The fund is ranked the world’s sixth-largest state investment company by Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute in California.

IT Spending Recovers After Recession, IDC Says

IDC is predicting that worldwide IT spending will jump 3.8 percent this year, to $1.47 trillion, after a recession-plagued 2009. Hardware makers will be the big winners, with spending on PCs, servers, storage and networking gear expected to soar. However, there are some areas of weakness, in particular in Western Europe and Japan, IDC said. – IT spending is rebounding in the wake of the global recession, with

Spain emerges from recession

Spain’s economy grew in the first three months of 2010, putting an end to six quarters of recession, the Bank of Spain said Friday. Gross domestic product (GDP) rose by 0.1 percent from January to March, the bank said. However, the economy remained 1.3 percent smaller than a year earlier.
