Google Jan. 26 trotted out a key piece of its Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" puzzle in the form of a preview SDK based on the new operating system intended for larger touch-screen tablet computers. Honeycomb offers users a new holographic user interface that focuses on multitasking, notifications, widgets and other features to make devices easy and fun to use. Google Maps in 3D is a big draw for this platform, which Google programmers like to boast has been redesigned from the ground up. To show off the OS, Google is also offering media and analysts a special demonstration at the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., Feb. 2. Those attending will see Honeycomb running on plenty of Motorola Xoom tablets and perhaps some others as hardware makers rush to polish their products and get them out the door to compete with Apple’s iPad. Google’s Android team also offered a sneak peek at what the Honeycomb user interface and other tools will look like on the Android developer Website. The Android developer team offered this platform highlights Web page. Of course, eWEEK gladly poached the screens for readers to peruse for their viewing pleasure. – …

Twitter Site Redesign Apes iPad App with Two-Pane Display
Twitter Sept. 14 trotted out a redesigned Website with the biggest new feature being the addition of a "details pane." Users will see the traditional timeline, plus additional information under each tweet. When users click on the tweet, the pane pops out to the right to display replies, videos, photos, other tweets or a map of where a geotagged tweet was sent from. Twitter also sports mini profiles. When users click a username, they will see a small box of a user’s profile info without navigating from the page. This will include a bio and recent tweets. The two-paned view recalls Twitter’s newly released iPad application, though Twitter CEO Evan Williams said both were developed separately even if at the same time. Twitter is banking that its 160 million-plus users will like the changes and that advertisers will get more value out of their Promoted Tweets with the new look. The company offers a video detailing the changes, but you can also see the changes here. – …

Google announced this month that the Nexus One, the companys first smartphone, which it developed with HTC, is being discontinued. It also made it available exclusively to T-Mobile customers in the United States with promises of more carriers at some point in the future. Those partnerships with other carriers never materialized. And soon, Google was offering a second-rate device on a second-rate carrier. It was a recipe for disaster. But just because Google has discontinued the Nexus One doesnt mean that the franchise is over. In fact, a new Nexus One could be announced soon. If so, here are some features that it must have to compete with Apples iPhone, the gold standard in the mobile marketplace. – …
