Croat PM resigns, withdraws from politics

Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has announced his resignation at a news conference in Zagreb this Wednesday. Earlier in the day, daily Jutarnji List quoted its sources who said Sanader had already notified his closest associates of his decision, as well as his Croatian Democratic Alliance (HDZ) party club in the country’s parliament.

Bosnia identifies first swine flu case

Bosnia has identified its first confirmed case of the H1N1 flu virus in a patient who came from abroad last week. Bosnia’s Serb entity (RS) Health Ministry confirmed this on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

Early vote count gives Albania’s ruling party lead

Albania’s ruling coalition had five more seats than the opposition coalition on Tuesday with more than two thirds of the votes counted. International monitors said the elections did not fully meet standards.

Two more swine flu cases in Montenegro

Two more swine flu cases have been confirmed in Montenegro, bringing the total number of cases in that country up to six. The Montenegrin Health Ministry stated that the new cases had been admitted to Podgorica Clinical Center and a hospital in Pljevlje.

142 ex-spies standing for election in Bulgaria

A special commission in Bulgaria has uncovered that 142 spies from communist times are standing in Sunday’s legislative elections. The special commission responsible for opening secret service files published the names of candidates who worked for the intelligence or counter-intelligence services, or as military agents engaged in other sections of the disbanded security services.

Ex- Bosniak commander freed of war crimes charges

Former Vlasenica territorial defense commander Ferid Hodžić has been freed of all charges of war crimes against Serb civilians and prisoners of war in 1992-93. The trial chamber yesterday found Hodžić not guilty of war crimes allegedly committed in Cerska, in the municipality of Vlasenica, in 1992-93.

Macedonia might have first swine flu case

A case has appeared in Macedonia which health officials seriously believe could be the country’s first swine flu infection. Macedonian Health Minister Bujar Osmani said that one four year-old boy, which came back from Australia recently with his family, is suspected of having the flu, though nothing will be known for certain until the initial results come back from London.

Early exit polls indicate Berisha ahead

Exit polls conducted by three firms appear to indicate a win for Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha’s Democratic Party. The central election commission in Albania has not made any announcements.

Polls have closed in Albania after a tightly fought election that is being watched closely by EU observers. Albanians voted in a general election that was seen as a test of the nation’s democratic credentials.
