United Regions impressive in local election

The United Regions of Serbia (URS) coalition and the Socialist Democratic party of Serbia won the most votes in the local elections in Bor. This is according to election monitors CeSID.

Statistical regions “no threat”

Minister for Human and Minority Rights Svetozar ÄŒiplić says statistical regions have no political content. He added that they were important only regarding the EU’s pre-accession funds and that “there is resistance because Serbia has a historical frustration with secessionism ever since 1974.”

Sandžak party against “ethnic regions”

SDPS official Meho Omerović said on Friday that the party is against any kind of region and creating of a sub-region based on ethnic division. Such a regionalization is not in accordance with the European standards, and SDPS is also against the suggestion to decrease the number of statistical regions from seven to five, a written statement given to Tanjug reads.

Bosniaks request meeting over regions

President of the Executive Board of the Bosniak National Council Esad Džudžević has requested a “promised meeting” with PM Mirko Cvetković. The meeting should discuss the statistical regions of the country.

“False decentralization; political regions needed”

More and more regional parties that support the government in parliament are showing opposition to the proposed decentralization plan, a daily writes. After the Sandžak parties of Rasim Ljajić and Sulejman Ugljanin opposed the “inefficient and false” regionalization, the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) and Together for Šumadija parties have also opposed it, Belgrade-based Danas newspaper says.

Minister: There’ll be no ethnic regions

The government will not allow formation of ethnic regions, including in the south, Public Administration and Local Self-Government Minister Milan Marković says. “That request from [ethnic] Albanians in the south of Serbia is not realistic, and at this point there are no constitutional preconditions to create territorial regions and institutions,” Marković told Belgrade daily Večernje Novosti.

Regions ink cross-border cooperation deal

The Vojvodina assembly, and heads of a Croatian and a Hungarian county today signed a trilateral agreement on cross-border cooperation in Novi Sad. This agreement should help Serbia, Croatia and Hungary in joint projects and presentation within EU assistance programs.
