The Aliens (Ex-Beta Band): New LP & 50 Page Book

The Aliens (Featuring Ex-Beta Band Members)

To Release Special Edition 50 Page Book Along with New LP This Fall

The Aliens

Ladies and gentlemen, The Aliens have landed. Armed with a bottomless bag of psychedelically inclined rock and acid dipped electronics, The Aliens bring a freedom of spirit that sets them out from the current crop of guitar slingers. Inspired by Sergio Leone and Serge Gainsbourg, Brian Eno and Brian Wilson, Larry David and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, their songs reference the past whilst belonging resolutely to the future.

The Aliens are creating a special limited-edition 50-page hard cover book, all color, and pop-up book which will also house the still un-named record. The book will include drawings, poems, film stills, photographs and interviews all done in the standard Alien manor. The book will be available for pre-order in September.

Formed in 2005 these Aliens have history – between them they have been behind some of the most enthralling British music of the last decade. John Maclean and Robin Jones where members of the Beta Band. Gordon Anderson was a founding Beta Band member who went on to record two albums under the Lone Pigeon moniker.

In March 2007 they released their first album Astronomy For Dogs to a hearty round of applause from the critics scoring 4 and 5 stars across the board. It’s a rich and vibrant carpet ride that crosses almost every musical genre one can imagine. Woven from the threads of Gordon’s genuine heartfelt songs and created on a loom of laser-light fibre-optics.

In September 2008 they made a welcome return with the release of Luna on their own label Petrock Records. They managed to deliver an album that manages to outshine their widely acclaimed debut.

The Aliens are always a thrilling proposition live, expect the unexpected…. it’s an unmissable, fist-in-mouth experience that showcases the band’s infectious energy and their frontman’s magnetism.

Toubab Krewe launches the second wave of summer tour with release of “Fire”
A new single featuring Jamaican legends Lukani, Earl Smith and Leroy Wallace

Toubab Krewe

Fresh from widely praised performances at Rothbury (read our review here), where members of the band joined The Dead on percussion during their headlining July 4th set, Toubab Krewe launches into the second leg of their summer tour with the release of a new single, “Fire.” The collaborative new song was recorded recently at reggae guitar legend Earl Smith‘s front porch home-studio in Kingston, Jamaica and features Lukani (vocals), Smith (guitar) and Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace (drums).

Toubab Krewe kicks off the tour aboard the first annual Toubab Kruise in New York City on July 15. The band will bring its dance-party inducing fusion of rock ‘n’ roll and West African music to the boat as it sails along the East River, heading through the New York Harbor to the Statue of Liberty.

Special guest Earl Smith will join Toubab Krewe on guitar at all of the upcoming shows through August 1. Perhaps the most sought after guitarist in reggae, Smith has performed and recorded with everyone from Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh and Burning Spear to more recent pop icons like Lauren Hill, Erykah Badu and Joss Stone.

Toubab Krewe plans to spend much of August in the studio recording a new full length album (details TBA).

An extensive fall tour is also in the works, with confirmed dates including the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco (October 8) and the Joshua Tree Music Festival (October 10).

Al-Qaeda releases Swiss hostage

Werner Greiner (l) and unidentified woman in image released by group on 18 February 2009

A Swiss man held hostage for six months by members of al-Qaeda in Mali has been freed, reports say.

Werner Greiner – seized in Niger – is the last of six Western hostages held by a group calling itself al-Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb.

In May, the group announced on a website that it had killed British hostage Edwin Dyer.

The group had been demanding the release of radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada from a UK prison.

"The Swiss hostage has been freed, he is very tired, and will soon be reunited with his family," a source close to local authorities in the north of the country told the French news agency AFP.

It was not immediately clear if a ransom had been paid to secure Mr Greiner’s release.

Mr Greiner and his wife were seized, along with four other tourists, near the Mali border on 22 January.

His wife, Gabriella Barco Greiner, was released by the hostage-takers in April.</p

ROSANNE CASH TO RELEASE HER NEW ALBUM, THE LIST, OCTOBER 6

SPECIAL GUESTS INCLUDE ELVIS COSTELLO, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, JEFF TWEEDY AND RUFUS WAINWRIGHT

Rosanne Cash

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash will release her 12th studio album, entitled The List, on Manhattan Records on October 6, 2009. The new LP features Cash’s contemporary interpretations of 12 classic songs culled from a list of essential country tunes that her legendary father Johnny gave her in 1973, filtered through her own unique, sophisticated perspective.

Known primarily for her stellar songwriting, Cash showcases her incredible voice on The List — her first-ever covers record. As a result, the album is Rosanne Cash like you’ve never heard her before as she embraces her heritage and sings for the pure love and beauty of these songs which have shaped who she is as an artist.

Produced and arranged by Grammy winner John Leventhal (Cash’s husband, who also contributes guitar work throughout), The List includes Cash’s covers of songs with assistance of notable musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy and Rufus Wainwright.

The List is the first album Cash has made since she underwent surgery in 2007 for a benign brain condition, from which she has fully recovered.

Track Listing for The List:

1. Miss the Mississippi and You
2. Motherless Children
3. Sea of Heartbreak (w/ Bruce Springsteen)
4. Take These Chains From My Heart
5. I’m Movin’ On
6. She’s Got You
7. Heartaches by the Number (w/ Elvis Costello)
8. 500 Miles
9. Long Black Veil (w/ Jeff Tweedy)
10. Silver Wings (w/ Rufus Wainwright)
11. Girl From the North Country
12. Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow

Nice tune, worrabout the Ka?

Ford has issued a release to say that the catchy tune that goes with its TV ad for the new Ka is available as a single for download from iTunes. The ditty is ‘The Tease featuring Megan Wyler’.

Megan Wyler, currently recording her first solo album, is described in the Ford press release as an experienced singer on the New York City club scene.

“The track was a fun collaboration for me so it was fantastic to hear there was desire for a full track to be recorded – I’m really pleased its been such a success for all involved,” she said. Yes, I’ll bet she is pleased.

Here’s a thought though. The old Ka, the first one, was an astonishing success. It kept the same platform for 13 years with little apparent adverse impact on sales. The thing about it was the distinct and differentiated styling and low price. It wasn’t a boring old Fiesta hatchback that your Aunt Hilda swore by.

Now then. Ford concludes that it needs a new Ka, that it cannot stand still. Old models have to be replaced. Fair enough and I’m sure the new one has much to commend it.

Is there room for a new Ka underneath Fiesta, like there was before? Quite possibly, but lines have got a bit blurred. The new Ka looks like it could be a Corsa and the new Fiesta has a lot more panache about it. The clear blue water between the old Ka and the previous Fiesta isn’t quite there any longer.

Could Ford have actually kept the old Ka going as a low-budget urban cult car, with a kind of retro appeal? The car’s longevity could perhaps even have been turned into a positive asset. A cheeky exception to the rule that models have to be reinvented every four years or so. Maybe they could have looked at giving it a gradual ‘green-over’ with pineapple plant headliners introduced (that does exist on the Brazilian-made VW Fox), more recycled plastics and such, extending appeal to those with environmental concerns. Could the humble Ka have morphed into a Beetle-style celebration of the virtues of low-cost utility over the culture of excess consumption?

Maybe you think I am getting carried away and perhaps I am. But the big winners in business tend to be the people and companies who understand how the world is changing rather than simply extrapolating the established values of the present into the future.

Just a thought. Nice tune, though (spot all the Kas?).
