The Dears: Residency Shows

PROCEEDS DONATED TO MONTREAL CITY MISSION AND WAR CHILD

The Dears

To introduce audiences to their new collection of songs, acclaimed art rock band The Dears will play a series of
residencies during which they will perform their forthcoming record in full. The eight residency shows – three
consecutive nights in Toronto and Montreal and two in Brooklyn (tour dates below) – will recapture the essence of
the band’s immensely successful string of shows in Mexico City this past May.

The Dears will be donating proceeds from every merch sale at these residencies to Montreal City Mission and War
Child. “Some of the items are rare, might be the wrong size, while some things are out of print and may be sold at
ridiculous prices. But this is not just about raising money. People hurt everywhere, all the time, and in so many
ways. Essentially, this is what we sing about and sometimes singing just ain’t enough. By taking some of this stuff
off our hands, hopefully folks will remember who they’re helping and why,” says the band of the endeavor.

The new record, slated for an early 2011 release, and touring lineup also marks the return of guitarists Patrick Krief
and Rob Benvie, early-era bassist Roberto Arquilla as well as newcomer Jeff Luciani on drums. In addition, of course,
to singer Murray Lightburn and keyboardist Natalia Yanchak. The band mentions that “we’ve seen many line-up
changes, but this one is quite special. Some of our relationships, and friendships, go back over 10 years. The result
has been powerful and chilling, like some cosmic design intent on blowing you away.”

Hot Hot Heat: New Album & Brooklyn Residency

HOT HOT HEAT PREVIEW NEW ALBUM DURING MAY RESIDENCY AT BROOKLYN’S PUBLIC ASSEMBLY

FUTURE BREEDS OUT JUNE 8 ON DANGERBIRD RECORDS

Hot Hot Heat

Hot Hot Heat‘s new album, Future Breeds (Dangerbird Records), hits stores on June 8, but fans in New York can get an early taste when the band begins its May residency at Brooklyn’s Public Assembly. The band
opted to do the shows at the venue because of its intimate setting and its close ties to Brooklyn’s thriving indie
music scene – a connection that the band feels to be particularly relevant with their forthcoming album. Future
Breeds
is filled with the addictive, candy-coated melodies that Hot Hot Heat are famous for, but it also includes
some of the band’s most experimental moments yet. Charged with sonic detail, the collection of songs is packed
with unconventional rhythms and quirky arrangements. From the dark, carnival-esque feel of “Times a Thousand” to
the frenzy of “What is Rational,” Future Breeds balances danceable, pop melodies with an unfettered and
musically adventurous spirit.

Soulive: Brooklyn Bowl Residency

BROOKLYN BOWL ANNOUNCES TWO-WEEK RESIDENCY WITH SOULIVE

Soulive

Brooklyn Bowl will host two weeks of Soulive, March 2-6 and March 9-13. The veteran soul groove outfit’s much anticipated residency, aptly dubbed “Bowlive,” is set for ten funk-infused evenings, glittered with special guests every night.

“We built Brooklyn Bowl with these types of events in mind,” says Brooklyn Bowl co-owner Peter Shapiro. “We wanted to create an environment where bands can stretch out, invite some friends over and jam. We didn’t think it would be for 10 nights, but when the opportunity to have Soulive camp out at the Bowl came by, we jumped at the chance.”

Soulive reached its 10th anniversary last year and the band couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than with 10 nights at Bowl. The run harkens back to the days of the Wetlands (Shapiro’s legendary club). “We cut our teeth at the Wetlands,” says guitarist Eric Krasno. “To this day, we’ve still probably played there more than any other club. Playing Brooklyn Bowl feels like a natural continuation of our early days at the Wetlands.”

Along with this decade milestone, the trio launched its own label, Royal Family Records, with a focus on digital distribution and the releases of the Soulive family’s side projects. Look for numerous Royal Family label mates to appear at Bowlive including Lettuce, Adam Deitch, Nigel Hall and others.

In 2010, Soulive turns their attention to the Fab Faux. The band has recorded an LP of timeless Beatles’ classics. Dubbed Rubber Soulive, the bands put their groove twist on “Eleanor Rigby,” “Taxman,” “In My Life” and many others. Keep your ears peeled for Beatles’ grooves amongst the legendary Soulive grooves at Bowlive.

Tickets are on sale now here.

The Bridge: Free NYC Residency

THE BRIDGE ANNOUNCE DECEMBER RESIDENCY AT NEW YORK CITY’S GRAMERCY THEATRE

The Bridge

The Bridge has announced plans for a four week residency in December at The Gramercy Theatre in New York City, where they will perform every Monday night of the month. The shows are free and will feature different special guests and opening acts at each performance. It’s a fitting conclusion to 2009 for the Baltimore-based band, a year in which they toured prolifically throughout the U.S., including festivals like Wakarusa, All Good, and Gathering Of The Vibes, and held down support slots for Derek Trucks Band, Little Feat, and Umphrey’s McGee.

“I’m really looking forward to us having an opportunity to come to NYC and be able to kick back and stretch out for a change,” states The Bridge’s primary songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist Cris Jacobs. “It’s usually a hurry up and hit it hard kind of situation there and the energy in that city is always extra intense anyway. So I’m really excited for us to settle in and let each night take us where it will. We’re gonna keep it spontaneous and loose and have some special guests join in on the fun. Previous residencies have always given us some of our most inspirational musical moments and that combined with the extra juice that New York City always has is going to be pretty damn fun.”

The Bridge’s latest album Blind Man’s Hill is available now on Hyena Records.

The Bridge tour dates available here.

Antibalas: Brooklyn Residency

ANTIBALAS LAND RESIDENCY AT KNITTING FACTORY IN BROOKLYN

Antibalas

After dedicating the last three years to providing the musical foundation and pulse for the latest off-and-on-Broadway sensation, Fela!, Antibalas brings the party back to its Brooklyn roots for a weekly residency at the iconic music venue, the Knitting Factory.

The concerts – to be held December 3, 10, 17, New Years Eve, and extending into January, 2010 – promise to hearken back to Antibalas’ legendary Africalia! dance parties at Tribeca’s now-defunct No Moore Club, and further cement the bands’ irrepressible reputation as an unstoppable live music juggernaut. From the New York Post: “What really makes the show work is the music, fabulously delivered by Antibalas,” to the New York Times: “As played by the Brooklyn band Antibalas, this is music that gets into your bloodstream,” Antibalas’ reputation has quickly become headline news.

Jackson rehearsals to feature in film

The promoters of Jackson’s aborted O2 residency are in talks with Hollywood studios to release a concert film featuring footage from the King of Pop’s final days

New Michael Jackson songs may be years from release, but a documentary about the late singer could be in cinemas worldwide before the end of 2009. The promoters of Jackson’s aborted O2 residency are in talks to sell the rights to nearly 80 hours of rehearsal footage, with plans to release a concert film.

Sony, Paramount, Universal, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros studios were all shown footage last week, Daily Variety reports. The studio that ultimately licenses the footage would co-produce the movie with the concert promoters, AEG Live, and Jackson’s estate. AEG is looking to recoup tens of millions in costs for Jackson’s 50-date Is This It concerts, cancelled after the singer died on 25 June.

Of the interested studios, Sony Pictures is reportedly leading the pack with a bid of $50m (£30m). Sony already has a vested interest in the film’s success, given that they distribute Jackson’s music and share ownership of his publishing rights. With months to go before the film is even completed, pay-per-view and television rights are also being negotiated. For the latter, figures in the tens of millions of dollars are rumoured.

Kenny Ortega, the High School Musical director who was responsible for the This Is It stage show, would direct the film, according to reports. The film is envisioned as a combined documentary, memorial and concert movie.
