STI flat; 3,235 near-term resistance

Singapore’s STI is flat at 3,221.64 in afternoon trade, with volumes light at 846.1 million shares worth $749 million, as investors stay sidelined heading into the Lunar New Year holidays.

Analysts expect near-term resistance at 3,235 but the index has been stalling around the 3,220-3,225 area over the past few sessions.

STI +0.5% midday; 3200-3206 resistance tipped

Singapore’s STI is up 0.5% at 3196.55 midday, after managing to not only hold on to early gains, but improve on them, with buying seen in recently beaten down blue chips such as Genting Singapore (G13.SG), +0.5% at $2.08, SingTel (Z74.SG), +1.3% at $3.11, and Noble (N21.SG), +0.5% at $2.18, with Golden Agri (E5H.SG), +0.7% at $0.725.

Charts tip Yangzijiang upside break soon – AmFraser

Amfraser says Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s (BS6.SG) lengthy 3-month test of key $2.00-$2.08 resistance raises the odds of a breakout to $2.23-$2.33 in the coming weeks.

Technical analyst Najeeb Jarhom says the stock always repeats the trend of moving higher past key recovery marks. He notes, since bottoming out at 27 cents a year after its crash from $2.87 peak in October 2007, YZJ has recovered 70% of its losses, taking around an average 3-4 months to scale one resistance area to another.

STI +0.5%; testing 3220 resistance, next cap 3267

STI last +0.5% at 3220.26, after rising to new 29-month highs, following Wall Street’s rise, gains across region; sentiment towards equities buoyed by expectations U.S. mid-term elections to show swing to Republicans, while Fed about to return to printing press, which should see more liquidity flow into Asian markets; also, domestic corporate earnings “so far seem to suggest the economy, while globally may be still mixed, might be in slightly better shape than expected, so that’s why I think we’re on the optimistic side while we await these (U.S. events),” says CIMB economist Song Seng Wun.

STI +1.0%; Upside momentum may continue: OCBC

Singapore shares staging broadly on back of Wall Street’s overnight rally, pushing STI +1.0% at 3,192.47, says Dow Jones.

If 3,200 fails to hold as resistance, next resistance tipped at 3,214 (June 2 high).

“Technically, the MACD indicator has initiated a clear rebound off its signal line over the past few sessions and this continues to suggest improving upside momentum going forward,” says OCBC Investment Research analyst Philip Teo.

STI +0.3%; 3,184 resistance; Shipbuilders active

Singapore stocks in broad-based advance, with almost 4 gainers for every decliner, says Dow Jones.

STI +0.3% at 3,139.08, with resistance expected at 3,184 (peak at June 6, 2008).

“It’s not a strong start for the week but considering that the index is already at its highest in more than two years, the performance is credible. With third-quarter earnings up ahead, the market could head higher if results beat expectations and guidance is strong,” dealer says.

STI may inch up; Resistance at 3,125 year-high

Hopes for more measures by Fed to help shore up sluggish US economy may lift Singapore shares after they drive up US stocks overnight, although any gains likely to be modest pending any concrete initiatives, says Dow Jones.

Resistance for STI, down 0.5% at 3,097.35 yesterday, expected at year-to-date high of 3,125, while last week’s 3,069 low tipped as support.

STI +0.7% at 9:35 a.m.; Resistance at 3,146; Noble soars

Singapore shares in broad-based advance, drawing strength from rally on Wall Street; STI +0.7% at 3,101.62, with resistance expected at higher end of 3,085-3,146 breakdown gap formed in June 2008, according to Dow Jones.

“Currently the short, intermediate and secular (long term) trends are all positive” for STI, says Phillip Securities analyst Phua Ming-Weii; “the STI and Asia in general continue to display a good bit of strength relative to the S&P 500.”

DMX Technologies +16.5%; Resistance At $0.545

DMX Technologies (5CH.SG) most active stock in Singapore, +16.5% at 11-month high of $0.495, extending Friday’s 21.4% rally, as participants remain hopeful digital media company will be able to generate greater investor following as its ADRs start trading on OTCQX International from Sept 23, according to Dow Jones.

“While quite a number of Singapore companies have lately taken the TDR route, DMX is doing ADRs, which could draw an even larger investor base,” says a local house trader. Each ADR represents 40 DMX shares.

While RSI shows stock overbought, current strong momentum likely to continue, with ADR performance expected to set tone for mother shares in near term. Immediate resistance at 52-week high of $0.545.

STI +0.9% at 2,945.67, expected to close up for first time in 4 sessions, with resistance likely at 2,969 (Aug 11 peak). Overall, gainers outnumbering decliners by 2 to 1 in broad market.

“The gains are not fantastic but it’s encouraging considering the largely flat sessions we had last week,” says trader at local house.

Small caps still most active, led by Oceanus Group (579.SG), +15.0% at $0.345, United Fiber System (P30.SG), flat at $0.05, Informatics (I03.SG), +6.3% at $0.17, Healthway Medical (5NG.SG), +5.9% at $0.18. Among blue chips, developers, Jardine group best performers, with CapitaLand (C31.SG) +2.3% at $4.03, CityDev (C09.SG) +2.6% at $11.92, Jardine Matheson (J36.SG) +3.3% at US$41.74, Jardine Strategic (J37.SG) +2.7% at US$24.04.

Singapore stocks mostly higher, with 2 gainers for every decliner, though gains modest, according to Dow Jones.

STI +0.4% at 2,929.90 at 9:25 a.m., with resistance at 2,948 (August 13 high); index expected to hold above 2,900 on any pullback.

“The benchmark STI has been slow in pushing to the upside, so expect range-bound trading today,” says Kim Eng Securities.

Penny shares most active in market as players turn to low-price plays for quick punt amid lack of catalysts.
