Villagers blast govt’s response to ‘danger lake’

ALTIT (Reuters) – Hundreds of villagers shouting anti-government slogans in Hunza on Friday denounced the authorities’ failure to offer compensation to residents displaced by a lake created after a landslide.
Officials evacuated thousands of people this week amid fears the lake, formed after a landslide blocked the Hunza River on January 4, could burst and affect about 50,000 people downstream and sever a road serving as an important trade link with China.
Twenty people were killed in the landslide and subsequent flooding of several villages upstream displaced about 6,000 people and left another 25,000 stranded, according to officials and residents.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani visited Altit village on Friday, where about 1,300 displaced people had been housed, some 15 km east of the new lake.
But soon after Gilani left, some in the 400-strong crowd began shouting anti-government slogans, demanding immediate relief, witnesses said.
“The protesters were annoyed that the prime minister did not announce any relief package for them,” Raza Hamadani told Reuters by telephone. The protesters dispersed after officials, who accompanied Gilani, assured them the government would announce compensation and help them resettle.
Officials hope for a gradual erosion of the blockage once the water starts flowing sometime next week through a spillway created to drain the lake. But they have not ruled out a sudden breach that could lead to massive flooding.
A sudden flood would inundate 39 villages in the regions of Hunza and Gilgit, affecting about 13,000 people. Residents put the number at about 25,000 with a similar number affected further downstream.
The lake has also submerged a 22-km stretch of the Karakoram Highway, hampering trade between Pakistan and China.
Online adds: Assuring all support of the government to affected people of Hunza, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that incumbent democratic government would announce a relief package for the affected people.
Addressing the affectees of Attabad lake here on Friday, the Prime Minister assured the people that once the package is finalised, it would be implemented immediately.
The Prime Minister said that the government is estimating the damage, ocurred by land sliding in the area, adding that water discharge from spillway is expected to start in two to three days.
PM Gilani said that all development projects in the area would also be expedited, adding that the government is aware of problems being faced by the people of Hunza. The Prime Minister thanked all government organisations in helping out the people of Hunza. He said that the people of Hunza are passing through a tough time due to natural calamities but the government would take advantage of this situation and would convert all challenges into opportunities.
He said the reforms introduced by the government in Gilgit-Baltistan would change the fate of the region, adding that under Benazir Income Support Programme, all facilities would be provided to the area. He informed that Baitul Maal would be extended to areas of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Expressing his condolence with the affected people whose loved ones died in landsliding, the Prime Minister said that he wanted to visit the area earlier but the weather did not permit him. He said that the government needs the cooperation of the people of Hunza to deal with the situation. “I apologise for not being able to disperse funds to the area immediately. We planned to give funds to the people of the area so that a sense of deprivation does not arise,” he added. The Prime Minister also directed Federal Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf to solve electricity problems being faced by the people in the camps.
Earlier in a briefing, Gilani was informed that areas affected by Attabad lake of Gilgit and Hunza have been divided into nine zones.
Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan in a briefing to the Prime Minister said that the government has one-month stocks of foods, medicines and other basic items for affected people. Gilani during visit to a camp inaugurated Benazir Langar and met the affectees. He asked them about problems being faced by them.
The Prime Minister, earlier reached Gilgit and was received by Governor Gilgit-Baltistan Dr Shahma Khalid and Chief Minister. Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira, Minister for Kashmir Affairs Mian Manzoor Wattoo and Interior Minister Rehman Malik accompanied the Prime Minister.

Google Android Tablet on Verizon Is a Logical Response to Apple’s iPad

Google Earth Crisis Response Site Tracks Gulf Oil Spill

On April 20, an explosion rocked the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, which was drilling in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana coast. The blast and subsequent fire killed 11 rig workers, injured 17 others and caused the drilling platform to sink several days later. The explosion damaged the wellhead, and now as many as 5,000 barrels, or 210,000 gallons of oil are pouring into the Gulf per day, killing fish and other marine life while threatening to foul the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Google, following a trend from the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, has set up a crisis response site to help provide more information about the disaster, including what people can do to aid the relief. This effort is illustrated in pictures in this eWEEK slide show.
