The Hold Steady New Album Heaven Is Whenever 5/4

The Hold Steady’s Heaven Is Whenever Set For Release May 4

The Hold Steady

The Hold Steady, lauded for the scope, depth, truth and heart they bring to chronicling the American rock myth, recently put the finishing touches on Heaven Is Whenever, their new album set for release May 4 on Vagrant Records. The album was produced by Dean Baltulonis, who engineered the band’s Almost Killed Me and produced Separation Sunday, and was recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios in Upstate NY and Wild Arctic Studios in Queens, NY, with mixing also happening at Wild Arctic.

Singer Craig Finn says Heaven Is Whenever is about “embracing suffering and understanding its place in a joyful life. The lyrics speak a lot about struggle and reward.” Piano and keys take a backseat to guitar on the new record, which also gets production help from guitarist Tad Kubler. “I really believe the album exposes new elements of the band that we hinted at on other records but weren’t able to fully realize until this one,” says Kubler. “Rather than just concentrate on changes in the instrumentation, we made changes to the song writing process.”

Recorded in several smaller sessions spread out over a long period of time, the songs on Heaven Is Whenever received the benefit of being tested on the band’s recent tours. There was also a makeshift recording booth set up on the back of their tour bus so songs and musical ideas could be documented as they developed. As Finn says this allowed them to “see what was working and what wasn’t. I believe this record benefits from us working at a more deliberate pace.”

Following the release of 2008′s critically acclaimed Stay Positive, which gave the band its highest Billboard chart position to date, The Hold Steady toured relentlessly, playing to some of their biggest audiences to date.

Kaki King: Junior Out 4/13 Signs To Rounder

KAKI KING SIGNS TO ROUNDER RECORDS, JUNIOR OUT APRIL 13

Kaki King

Singer & guitarist extraordinaire Kaki King has signed with Rounder Records. Named a “Guitar God” by Rolling Stone, King has spent the past decade gathering critical acclaim and fan admiration. She received a Golden Globe nomination for her contribution to the musical score of the 2007 film Into the Wild, and also performed on the Foo Fighters‘ 2007 Grammy winning album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.

As with her previous album, 2008′s Dreaming of Revenge, Junior was produced by Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris, Patti Smith), but unlike each of King’s previous efforts – where she recorded all the instruments herself – for Junior she enlisted help from multi-instrumentalist Dan Brantigan and drummer Jordan Perlson. King wrote each of the album’s 11 songs.

The Album Leaf: 2010Tour Dates

THE ALBUM LEAF ANNOUNCE FEBRUARY TOUR DATES

The Album Leaf

A Chorus of Storytellers was recorded by Ryan Hadlock in the frosty month of February 2009 at Bear Creek Studio just outside of Seattle. It was mixed in the decidedly warmer month of June in Reykjavik, Iceland by Birgir Jon Birgisson (of Sigur Ros). Those paying attention will notice that this is nearly the same way their last album, Into the Blue Again, was recorded.

There is, however, one fundamental difference between this and every other album The Album Leaf has ever recorded. For the first time in five albums, The Album Leaf recorded as a whole band. In the past, almost every instrument was performed by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle. This time the whole band was invited to participate and the result is their best record yet.

The Album Leaf Tour Dates
02/05/10 Fri Doug Fir Portland, OR

02/06/10 Sat Neumos Seattle, WA

02/12/10 Fri Great American Music Hall San Francisco, CA

02/13/10 Sat El Rey Theatre Los Angeles, CA
