Peter Case: New Album & CA Dates

WIG! OUT NOW

Peter Case has gone back
to his
rock roots following emergency open heart surgery last year with an inspired new rock album
Wig!, released June 29, 2010. Listen to the album below.

Last nominated for his 2007 Yep Roc album Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John, Case, like thousands of
musicians and artists in the United States, was nearly a statistic of our now slowly recovering health care system.
Following a double-bypass in early 2009, Case was lucky to walk out of the hospital with a renewed vigor for life
and music but he also had a six-figure medical bill he couldn’t pay. Case’s fans and peers like T-Bone Burnett,
Richard Thompson, Joe Henry
and Loudon Wainwright III immediately rallied to organize a benefit
concert to help with his obligations. While on the mend, Case prepped the reissues of albums by his early rock
outfits The Plimsouls and The Nerves. “I had to do the mastering and spent quite a bit of time listening to the old
records. It really got me going, hearing those guitars.”

Following an especially rocking sold-out comeback show at McCabe’s where he debuted the tunes he’d been
assembling in his recovery months, Case began to work in earnest on a new album. Recovered physically and
emboldened by the generosity of his fans and friends, Peter recorded the resulting raucous and dirty electric blues
rock of Wig! in only three days. Case is headed home to California for a handful of dates listed below.

12.02.10 @ The Palms Playhouse in Winters CA
12.03.10 @ the Point Richmond Concert Series in Point Richmond CA
12.04.10 @ Amnesia Bar in San Francisco CA
12.05.10 @ Piedmont Piano Company, Oakland CA

“Elvis Costello With…” Bono, Toussaint, The Boss, More

BONO, ALLEN TOUSSAINT, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AMONG GUESTS IN SEASON TWO OF
SUNDANCE CHANNEL’S “SPECTACLE: ELVIS COSTELLO WITH…”

Elvis Costello

Sundance Channel will launch the second season of its critically acclaimed music/talk original series “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 10:00 p.m. et/pt with an episode featuring U2‘s Bono and The Edge. “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” combines the best elements of talk and music television and lets viewers in on intimate conversation and performances with host Costello and his guests, who range from legendary performers to promising new artists.

The series, executive produced by Sir Elton John, includes one-on-one interviews, unprecedented pairings and group discussions, as well as extraordinary performances, from impromptu “illustrative” moments to full band (and even multi-band) productions. Among the confirmed guests for the seven-part season are: Bono, The Edge, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, John Prine, Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case, Jesse Winchester, Ray LaMontagne, Nick Lowe, Levon Helm, Richard Thompson, and Allen Toussaint.

“We’re thrilled to launch a second season of ‘Spectacle’ on Sundance Channel,” said Sundance Channel EVP and GM, Sarah Barnett. “The series offers viewers unusually close access to artists through its mix of candid conversations and exciting musical performances. This season’s A-list lineup is a testament to the tremendous respect that artists feel for Elvis Costello as a musician and entertainer.”

“I am delighted that we can continue where we left off–making intelligent, and informative music programming,” said Sir Elton John, one of the series’ executive producers. Elvis Costello commented: “In the words of the great Joe Strummer, ‘Let’s rock again!’”

The program’s eclecticism and depth reflect its uniquely qualified host. Costello is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee; a Grammy and Ivor Novello Award-winning (and Oscar®-nominated) songwriter and performer comfortable in almost every genre imaginable; a musicologist of formidable breadth and knowledge; a contributor to Vanity Fair magazine; and a noted wit whose stint as guest host on The Late Show with David Letterman won rave reviews.

“Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” is taped in front of a live audience at Harlem’s world famous Apollo Theater in New York City and The Masonic Temple in Toronto, Canada. The series will also air on CTV in Canada.

Sat Eye Candy: The Jukebox

BRIGHTENING UP BARROOMS FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY

Next Monday, November 23, the jukebox will celebrate its 120th anniversary. Few inanimate objects have had a greater cultural impact, providing a sense of shared community and inspiring more songs than can be counted. While MP3 players and other modern digital devices almost make a machine that mechanically picks up individual records sort of quaint, it’s unlikely the image or metaphor of the jukebox is ever going to fully die out. Truly glorious contraptions are few and far between, especially ones that have done so much to popularize and celebrate recorded music.

We travel back to the 1940s for this sweet soundie to get the record spinning this week.

One of the biggest hits ever connected with the machines was June Carter’s “Juke Box Blues.” Here’s the nifty version from Walk The Line.

The Sex Pistols’ frontman is a true knob on the BBC series Juke Box Jury in ’70s.

Richard Thompson was on a particularly hot streak in 1990, including this fiery performance on the much-missed Night Music program.

Enjoy this hopping clip of Johnny Otis and his dancers doing “Willie and the Hand Jive” from the 1959 movie Jukebox Rhythm.

Mainstream country music remains one of the jukebox’s last strongholds in popular music, at least as a thematic inspiration. This swinger from Alan Jackson owes a strong debt to Buck Owens.

Here’s another neato peachy keen clip from the BBC series in 1960.

Another soundie, this time from the swell Glenn Miller Modernaires. Folks sure had fun in soda shops back in the day!

We end, as we must, with Foreigner‘s overwrought ode to becoming a rock star. Sure, it’s pure cheese, but dang it’s kinda tastyÂ…

Indigo Girls: Poseidon And The Bitter Bug

By: Bill Clifford

The Atlanta-based duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have been writing, recording and performing music together as the Indigo Girls for more than twenty years. Their debut recording, 1987′s Strange Fire, was independently released and then later re-released via Columbia Records. With their eleventh studio recording, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, they’ve come full circle, releasing the CD on their own independent imprint label, IG Records, distributed via Vanguard Records.

The new CD finds the duo working again with veteran producer Mitchell Froom (Neil Finn, Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega). It’s a double CD, with one disc being a full band recording of ten songs while the second offers barebones, acoustic versions of the same songs plus one that didn’t make the full band disc, harkening back to the acoustic folk of Strange Fire.

The songs are placed in a different order on each disc, and initially, the full band recording resonates a little more and warrants repeat listens. For instance, the full band version of “Digging For Your Dreams” is haunting and ethereal, fleshed out with a slow but cadent rhythm, lush organ swells and pitch perfect, digitally touched up vocals. The acoustic version focuses the attention on the sparse guitars, lovely, lilting harmonies and harsh, heart wrenching lyrics like, “I went looking for the answers from someone I heard believes that life gets easier/ You learn how to breathe or you learn how to grieve the past.”

Elsewhere, that same sparse instrumentation bares a strong resemblance to Strange Fire. On the upbeat, hooky “Love Of Our Lives” one can imagine oneself on a backyard porch with a small crowd, singing along at the top of their lungs with Ray and Saliers strumming their guitars.

The Indigo Girls remain committed to social, political and environmental issues in their songwriting. On “Salty South,” the bonus acoustic track, they sing about Native American folklore and the glorious sunsets of early America compared to those we see today in picture frames with no sense of time. Sweet banjo adds a dulcet tone to the duo’s lilting harmonies.

The additional instrumentation and polished production on the full band recording serves “Second Time Around” well, with Ray’s mandolin mixing sweetly with banjo. On the full band CD rockers such as “What Are You Like” and “Ghost Of The Gang” are rousing and upbeat with electric guitar and steady drums and bass, while on the acoustic versions one doesn’t necessarily miss the rock instrumentation.

The collective experiences between these two singer-songwriters, including Ray’s solo punk excursions, have established the Indigo Girls as career artists. Their independence from the corporate music world reinforces their integrity, though it was never in doubt. Whether listening to the full band recordings or the acoustic versions, Poseidon And The Bitter Bug affirms their status as musical icons who continue to live up to the high standards they’ve set for themselves for more than two decades.
