Jerry Joseph & Wally Ingram | Salt Lake City | Review | Pics

Words & Images by: Phil Santala

Jerry Joseph & Wally Ingram :: 12.12.10 :: The State Room :: Salt Lake City, UT

Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons begin a three-night run in Portland, OR tonight. Amazing, under-sung American rock greats Richmond Fontaine open for the Jackmormons on NYE. For full show details pop over here.

Jerry Joseph by Phil Santala

What ever you do, don’t call it a comeback or anything new. Jerry Joseph has been absolutely on fire the last few years. Not matter who he is touring with – the Jackmormons, Denmark Veseys, Stockholm Syndrome, or just with percussionist Wally Ingram – his shows, as of late, almost never cease to amaze me. The State Room show in Utah was no exception.

Bold words considering this summer saw me walking away from three nights in Virginia City, MT at Bandito’s shaking my head in wonderment. That run itself just gets better and betterÂ…but enough about the past. We gathered in Salt Lake City, one of Jerry’s former residencies, to partake in some pre-holidays shenanigans, Jerry Joseph Style.

Jerry came out, hulking onto the stage in big heavy boots. Some in the crowd responded by shouting, “Show us your feet!” It was clear that those in attendance were not just casual fans. The core had turned out for this event, and the duo did not disappoint. Jerry seemed to be in high spirits, joking to the crowd before “Wisconsin Death Trip” that, “Wally and I, when I was a kid, we used to sing this around the Christmas tree at Wally’s house, eating Christmas koogle.” Jerry also jested after the Vic Chestnutt song “Flirted With You All My Life” that the song was about “holidays and good times. You feeling any better?” Vic, he said, “fucking nailed it” with that song. The Christmas spirit was certainly making Jerry’s heart grow three times its size that day.

Local Jackmormons bassist JR Ruppel joined Jerry and Wally for much of the second half of the set. The encore, which was especially moving and heartfelt, found Joseph stepping out from the mike to shout and sing directly to the crowd: “Ring ‘em up, tell ‘em that you love ‘em. CALL THEM NOW AND TELL THEM THAT YOU LOVE THEM!” It was a plea, a call, a cry of passion. Hold on, hold onto those around you, those you care for, those you hurt and neglect through your selfishness, those that never left you in the dark on your own no matter how you tried to push them away and no matter how many times your vices came between you and them. Ring ‘em up, and tell them Jerry Joseph said hi. Better yet, why don’t you all come out to the next Jerry Joseph show and see what the buzz is really all about?

Setlist
White Dirt, Jump, LAX, Flirted With You All My Life, Fur, Cochise, Two Balloons> Time the Revelator> Two Balloons. Muscles*, Radio Cab*, Paper Planes*>Climb to Safety*(slow)> Train Detective rap> Midnight Rambler rap> Climb to Safety*> Paper Planes*

Encore: Ring ‘em Up*> Good Sunday*>We Fall Down*> Good Sunday*

*w/ JR Rupple.

Peter Case: New Album & CA Dates

WIG! OUT NOW

Peter Case has gone back
to his
rock roots following emergency open heart surgery last year with an inspired new rock album
Wig!, released June 29, 2010. Listen to the album below.

Last nominated for his 2007 Yep Roc album Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John, Case, like thousands of
musicians and artists in the United States, was nearly a statistic of our now slowly recovering health care system.
Following a double-bypass in early 2009, Case was lucky to walk out of the hospital with a renewed vigor for life
and music but he also had a six-figure medical bill he couldn’t pay. Case’s fans and peers like T-Bone Burnett,
Richard Thompson, Joe Henry
and Loudon Wainwright III immediately rallied to organize a benefit
concert to help with his obligations. While on the mend, Case prepped the reissues of albums by his early rock
outfits The Plimsouls and The Nerves. “I had to do the mastering and spent quite a bit of time listening to the old
records. It really got me going, hearing those guitars.”

Following an especially rocking sold-out comeback show at McCabe’s where he debuted the tunes he’d been
assembling in his recovery months, Case began to work in earnest on a new album. Recovered physically and
emboldened by the generosity of his fans and friends, Peter recorded the resulting raucous and dirty electric blues
rock of Wig! in only three days. Case is headed home to California for a handful of dates listed below.

12.02.10 @ The Palms Playhouse in Winters CA
12.03.10 @ the Point Richmond Concert Series in Point Richmond CA
12.04.10 @ Amnesia Bar in San Francisco CA
12.05.10 @ Piedmont Piano Company, Oakland CA

Jimmy Herring

Jimmy Herring is hittting
the road with his current line-up, featuring Herring on guitar, drummer Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit,
Jazz is Dead, Shawn Lane), keyboardist Matt Slocum (Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks), and Neal
Fountain
on bass (Col Bruce Hampton, Alex Machacek). Tour dates are below.

The Jimmy Herring Band will be performing a wide range of material, including compositions from Herring’s long-
awaited and much-acclaimed 2008 solo debut Lifeboat.

“The music for the upcoming tour will be a mixed bag. Some stuff from the album and some covers I have always
wanted to play- Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Frank Zappa among others. Hopefully there will be
enough freedom for everyone to relax and have equal creative input. One thing I learned from Bruce Hampton is,
the simpler the music, the easier it is to reinterpret it each time you play it.”

Herring, who toured this summer with drummer Lenny White (Miles Davis, Return To Forever) will be one
of the
headliners at the New Universe Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina on November 20-21 as well as performing
there with The Lenny White Group and paying a tribute to guitar icon John McLaughlin with
whom he co-bills the
House of Blues concert in Boston on November 16.

Girl Talk: Extensive 2011 Tour

2011 SHOWS BEGIN IN CLEVELAND IN JANUARY

“Mr. Gillis aims to please. His music is a collage of hits, recent and old, that are instantly recognizable to just about everyone in the crowd. Each one – from Jay-Z to Styx to the Ramones to Missy Elliott to Nirvana – draws a cheer within a few notes. Mr. Gillis samples the songs’ obvious hooks. He isn’t a hipster showing off how deeply he’s dug into his collection; he’s a fellow fan, reactivating remembered pop pleasures.” – Jon Pareles, The New York Times

With almost 300 shows under his belt, and hardly a full week off, since Feed The Animals was released in June 2008 and Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) has announced another 40-city tour, all set to take place in 2011 before March is even over!
