Rival Scientist Calls IBM Cat Brain Simulation a ‘Scam`
A rival scientist is disputing a claim by an IBM researcher that he and other scientists were able to simulate a cats brain using a new algorithm running on an IBM supercomputer. Henry Markham, heading up another project called Blue Brain, called the claims by IBM scientist Dharmendra Modha a “scam” and a “hoax,” and argued that what Modhas group accomplished only proved that it had access to a massive supercomputer.
– Not everyone is impressed with the claim by IBM researchers that they are on track in developing a supercomputer that can simulate the human brain.
At the Supercomputing 2009 show Nov. 18, IBM scientists said they had reached two milestones by simulating a brain similar to that of a cat. In their p…

Google Voice Now a Viable Skype Rival with Gizmo5 Buy
Google Nov. 12 confirmed that it had acquired Gizmo5 for an undisclosed sum. Gizmo5 makes Web-based calling software for mobile phones and computers. Specifically, it provides a Web-based VOIP client that lets users make phone calls over the Internet, similar to programs such as Skype. Some speculate Gizmo5 will evolve into a new version of the Google Talk voice and video chat application, supporting Google Voice and its many voicemail management features, including automatic voicemail transcription. Many industry watchers agree this deal puts Google Voice and Skype, which Google reportedly tried to acquire earlier this year, on a collision course.

70 dead as rival militants clash
PESHAWAR – Dozens of gun-totting militants were killed and more than 40 houses destroyed as a result of clashes between Taliban of Baitullah Mehsud group and those loyal to the pro-government tribal leader Malik Turkistan Betani.
As per details, the clashes started when scores of Taliban militants from Baitullah Mehsud attacked the supporters of Malik Turikistan Betani in village Shoza in Soor Ghar area in Frontier regions connecting South Waziristan Agency and Tank district of NWFP late on Wednesday night.
The Taliban militants used modern and sophisticated weapons against the Betani tribesmen and their supporters. As per unconfirmed reports, around 70 persons from both the sides were killed. Around 40 houses owned by supporters of Malik Turikistan Betani were also destroyed. The killed and the injured included women and children.
Malik Turikistan Betani when contacted confirmed the clashes, saying Baitullah Mehsud group militants had attacked the houses of his relatives in Soor Ghar area. He claimed that the attack was so far repulsed but a large number of people from both the sides were killed. He, however, was unable to give exact figures in this respect.
The local people informed that security situation in the area was tightened whereas gunship helicopters were also used to bring the situation under control.
Malik Turikistani Betani has shown disappointment over the role of security forces. He said that amidst presence of two brigades of the armed forces, frequent attacks against him and his supporters is surprising. It was the second attack against Malik Turikistan Betani in a period of one week by militants from Baitullah Mehsud.
Do Hyper-V’s Improvements Make It a Stronger VMware Rival?
Hyper-V, part of the Windows Server 2008 R2 platform, provides some improvements that were absolutely necessary for Microsoft to even think of competing with VMware’s latest offerings. Are they enough? eWEEK Labs’ early look at the new Hyper-V shows that Microsoft still has a lot of ground to cover.
– Microsoft released Windows Server 2008 R2 with a newly improved version of
Hyper-V. Even so, VMware is still miles ahead in terms of the features and
innovation that lay the foundation for sustainable virtualization for midsize and
large enterprises.
In fact, I think VMware with its just-release…

Apple blocks rival smart phones

The latest update of Apple’s iTunes has included a fix to block devices such as the Palm Pre that use the program for synchronising music and content.
The Palm Pre smartphone is seen by many as a direct rival to Apple’s iPhone because of its innovative interface and web based software.
Marketing for the new Palm Pre touted "seamless" synchronisation with iTunes, because it appeared as an Apple device.
Palm called the move a "direct blow" to Apple’s users.
While many devices can, through intermediary software, connect and synchronise with iTunes, the Pre was able to do so because it identified itself as an iPod.
In June, Apple issued a note stressing that it "does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players" and warned that "newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality" with them.

Now, the latest version of iTunes, 8.2.1, has patched the hole through which devices could masquerade as Apple products.
Apple said in a statement that the update, in addition to other bug fixes, "also disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre".
Palm said that the Pre would work with previous versions of iTunes.
"If Apple chooses to disable media sync in iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience," the firm said in a statement.
The statement added that "there are other third-party applications we can consider" and that users could simply choose not to update iTunes or could use a USB cable to directly transfer files.</p
