Revolting witches hex Romanian government

Superstition is a serious business in Romania, so serious the government decided to tax it in these austere times, and as part of a drive to slash tax evasion. Today a coven of a dozen witches makes its way to the capital to hex the politicians in protest, a threat that carries clout in a nation where belief in such things is mainstream.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc has survived the latest no-confidence motion against his government, in the most dramatic of circumstances.

His speech to parliament was interrupted by a man jumping from the balcony in protest at austerity measures.

Bulgaria, Romania won’t join Schengen

France and Germany have decided to block Bulgaria and Romania from joining Europe’s passport-free 25-nation Schengen travel area next year, RFE/RL reports. A European Commission spokesman, Michele Cercone, said today that French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux and his German counterpart, Thomas de Maiziere, told the European Commission in a letter that it was “premature” to let them enter Schengen in March 2011.

Regional energy projects declaration

Energy ministers of Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania and Greece signed in Sofia a declaration on joint cooperation in energy projects over the next 10 years.
The declaration, which was adopted to the proposal of Serbian Minister of Energy Petar Škundrić, is based on the conclusions of the ministerial conference on the need to develop regional energy strategies.

Romania reaffirms stance on Kosovo

Romania will not change its stance regarding recognizing Kosovo “because it is a matter of principle”, Romanian FM Teodor Baconschi said in Bucharest.
A unilateral act cannot turn an area into an independent state, Baconschi said at a briefing for European journalists.

Press freedom deteriorates in Serbia

The Serbian Association of Journalists (UNS) noted the country’s “alarming drop” on a list measuring freedom of the press.
On the annual list published by Reporters Without Borders, which monitors the state of press freedom in 178 countries, Serbia ranks behind Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Romania and Bulgaria, while it shared the 62nd spot in 2009 with another five countries, finishing ahead of Bulgaria.

Gazprom looks to include Romania in S. Stream

Russia’s Gazprom is looking at possibilities of including Romania in the route of its South Stream natural gas pipeline. According to reports, the oil and gas giant signed an agreement with Romania’s Transgaz in order to study the possible construction through the country.

Roma freedom stoking political debate

Technical meetings on the legality of expulsions of Roma from from France to Romania and Bulgaria are taking place in Brussels. Freedom of movement for EU citizens is under scrutiny. Paris has said its deportation of nearly 9,000 Roma from illegal camps in France so far this year respects EU rules.

France expels more Roma

Dozens of Roma people expelled as part of a crackdown on crime and illegal immigration by the French government have left France bound for Romania. Hundreds more will follow in the next few weeks.

More smuggling arrests made at border

Border police arrested four persons suspected of trying to smuggle cigarettes across the border with Romania. The suspects had in their possession 39 boxes with a total of 1,900 cartons of cigarettes with Serbian excise stamps on them.

Water polo team wins World Cup

Cyprus, Romania on Kosovo after ICJ ruling

Romania: Ceausescus’ remains exhumed

Forensic scientists exhumed what are believed to be the bodies of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena at the request of their children. Ceausescu ruled Romania for 25 years with an iron fist before being ousted and executed during the 1989 anti-communist revolt in which more than 1,000 people were killed.

Romania on Kosovo and Serbia’s EU bid

Romanian President Traian Basescu says Belgrade’s decision not to recognize Kosovo should not influence Serbia’s EU integration. He repeated that his country will not recognize Serbia’s southern province either, Tanjug reported.
