JamBase Questionnaire: Roots of Creation
Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from The Steepwater Band.
new live album |
Southern New Hampshire isn’t the first spot folks start looking for high-octane modern reggae, which is too bad since Roots of Creation are one of the most exhilarating, rules breaking units blowing up right now. With of ample dousing of gnarly, rock-flavored guitars and a healthy blip logic that shows more than a passing familiarity with contemporary electronica, RoC join the shortlist of young bands – UK-based Soothsayers, New Zealand’s The Black Seeds and fellow U.S. acts John Brown’s Body and Groundation – moving reggae forward into the 21st century.
You can hear their highly engaging, forward pushing sound in action on RoC Live, Vol. 2 (released on October 26 on Harmonized Records). Culled from performances from 2009 and 2010, including songs recorded during sets at the Wormtown and Nateva Music Festivals, The Paradise Rock Club in Boston and more, Live Vol. 2, the band’s fourth album, features the engaging single “Policy, ” a bouncing cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place” and a barnstorming finale take on Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” that reinvents the tune. Elsewhere, unpredictable, heavy duty instrumental “Mammoth” and originals “Dubby Conqueror” and “Searchin’” hint at good things to come from RoC. The album was mixed by engineer Pete Peloquin (Pixies, Dave Matthews, OAR) and co-mixed by the group’s live sound engineer Cooper Leafe, giving the set an immediacy and clarity that mixes the best traits of home listening and live sound.
Roots of Creation formed in 2000 while attending college together and began touring seriously in 2004. Today the band is comprised of original members Brett Wilson (lead vocals, guitar), Tal Pearson (keyboards) and Mike Chadinha (drums), and they are currently touring with bassist Brandon Downs and second guitarist Jay McGuinness. Based on the evidence of Live Vol. 2, this is a lethal live act with a promising drive and open minds. Can’t ask for more than that, particularly in a genre that often plays too heavily to tradition. In RoC’s hands, reggae is both relevant and exciting. (Dennis Cook)
Roots of Creation will play New Year’s Eve at Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA, followed by a January 1st show at Crotched Mountain in Bennington, NH.
Here’s what Brett Wilson and Tal Pearson had to say to our inquiries.
Brett Wilson of RoC |
Instrument(s) of choice:
Brett: Vocals / Guitar – DeArmond Starfire & Ibanez Artcore Hollowbody through a Fender Amp with lots of pedals
Tal: Keys. Right now having lots of fun with my Roland SH-201. It’s good for Whomping.
Nicknames:
Brett: “Bdubs” & “Wilson”
Tal: “The mantis”
1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Brett: Inspiration, originality, chemistry, passion, pain, and my buddies Sauza and Mary Jane.
Tal: Inspiration. Vibes. A feeling in the room.
2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
Brett: Ten cassette tapes for a penny from Columbia House. Favorite one was the Grateful Dead.
Tal: Dookie by Green Day
3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
Brett: Rebelution’s “Feelin’ Alright”
Tal: Mumford and Sons’ Sigh No More
4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
Brett: A movie reviewer or comic book illustrator.
Tal: Still not really sure.
5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
Brett: When we turn a club into an arena and a late night festival slot into a house party.
Tal: When you can feel the venue shaking because everyone is dancing so much! And I love it when the crowd is responsive to different things, like the music changing or the lights getting intense.
6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
Brett: Gingers DO have soul!
Tal: I really do have good taste in music!
7. I love the sound ofÂ…
Brett: Wookies WHOMPing
Tal: HUGE bass in the speakers!
8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
Brett: Beck’s Midnight Vultures
Tal: Band of Horses’ Everything All The Time
9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
Brett: Green Mountain College, all the vegetarian food and breakfast cereal you could ever want. Plus they recycle, compost, and are super nice.
Tal: Probably a giant breakfast somewhere with everything – eggs, bacon, French toast, sausage, home fries, soda, andÂ…American Cheese! Don’t remember where exactly.
10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
Brett: Smaller cities, festivals and colleges, especially in MI, NC, CO, NH, and the West Coast
Tal: Music festivals.
11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Brett: Pizza and a Smartphone addiction.
Tal: Sleeping til 1 pm.
12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
Brett: The Stones. Beatles = great songs, but the Stones were bad ass and have raw energy – the epitome of rock ‘n’ roll. Plus, Mike Jagger kicked it with Peter Tosh and Keith Richard’s new roots reggae albums are great!
Tal: I’ve always gone with The Beatles on this one. I think their music is much more interesting, and that they had a greater influence on the sounds of rock and roll to come.
13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
Brett: Tie between playing a guerilla set at Rothbury on shakedown to a literal sea of people and my picture in High Times – January 2011 issue on page 108 of the 420th issue – playing at Nateva with a SSDP shirt on.
Tal: The catering areas of big music festivals are always sort of surreal to me because you’re eating lunch next to people you’ve listened to and watched for a long time! I remember at Rothbury in 2009, casually eating some delicious food next to the guys from Soulive and then Willie Nelson happened to wander by. Surreal.

John
Legend and The
Roots will release their collaboration, Wake Up! on September 21, 2010. The album will feature soulful music from the 60s and 70s with an
underlying theme of awareness, engagement and consciousness.
After being inspired by the recent historical Presidential election campaign of 2008, the R&B singer and hip-hop band felt a need to enter the action. What started as plans for a single quickly developed into an album representing change, hope and activism. The resulting album features eleven evocative songs, including Marvin Gaye’s “Wholly Holy” and Donny Hathaway’s “Little Ghetto Boy” mixed with more obscure selections like Baby Huey and the Babysitters’ “Hard Times,” and Mike James Kirkland’s “Hang on in There”.
“These songs sound so relevant now,” Legend says. “On most of them, you wouldn’t change a lyric. ‘Wake Up
Everybody’ (the album’s first single, featuring contributions from Melanie Fiona and Common) has four verses — the first one
is a general statement, the second is about education, third is about health care, and the fourth is about making a
better environment. No editing needed.”
The album features one original composition, Legend’s song “Shine,” which is featured in
director Davis Guggenheim’s upcoming documentary film Waiting for Superman.

The Roots Picnic | 06.05 | Philadelphia
Words & Images by: Jake Krolick
3rd Annual Roots Picnic :: 06.05.10 :: Penn’s Landing :: Philadelphia,
PA
‘Tis the season in the 215, that time of year to clean your hi-tops with that old
toothbrush and hang out in a parking lot all day in 90-degree weather. Sound like
torture, maybe, but to those who have braved the heat for the last two Roots
Picnics know how amazing these events can be. Too bad this year’s gathering was
nowhere near the throw down that the last two were, but there was still fun to be found if
you knew where to listen. Plus, Philly was ripe for a party, high on a Stanley Cup play-
off and ready for the best event to bridge the culture, race and music gap the city had
ever seen.
The day’s highlights came from several sources, but let’s start with the two bands from
Africa. Bajah and the Dry Eye Crew opened by saying how we were all going to
Africa with them before they put on a warm-up set filled with bass heavy rhythms and an
exhibition in how to dance in the heat of the midday. The other African connection, The Very Best,
shattered my expectations and made the crowd move like there was no tomorrow. Their set
was filled with their songs, “Julia”, “Warm Heart of Africa” and “Mulomo,” which features
the music from Yeasayer‘s “Ambling Alp” all wrapped up in a yummy dose of afro-
electropop. Jay
Electronica‘s set was thoughtful and featured some well delivered songs about the
hurricane debacle in New Orleans and a great rap about living on Cecil B. Moore in North
Philly.
The Roots
were a bit of a disappointment, not musically, more in that they barely played as The
Roots. In previous years we got spoiled with two to three full Roots sets throughout the
day. The highlight of their brief jaunt came in guest spots by Philly’s Dice Raw
and ex-bassist Leonard Hubbard. To make up for the lack of solo Roots, they served
us a generous helping of The Roots playing back-up band to John Legend and
The Roots with the Wu-
Tang
Clan‘s Method
Man, Ghostface
Killah and Raekwon.
The John Legend set was expectedly soulful and featured a funky rendition of Bill
Withers’ “I Can’t Write Left-Handed” and a cover of Eugene McDaniels’ “Compared To What.”
The Wu set featured a fair amount of smack talk about the Philly sports teams, but the
performance made up for the babble as the rowdy grouping heaved us a classic “C.R.E.A.M.”
from their album 36 Chambers.
Much of the crowd ran for the gate before Vampire Weekend
dropped a short set of songs that really would have been better suited in an afternoon
time slot than at the end of a long day. Regardless Vampire Weekend closed out the
festivities with true-to-the-album versions of “Oxford Comma” and “A-Punk.” Frontman
Ezra Koenig said that The Roots were the first band that he ever paid money to see
before closing it all down with “Walcott.”

Green Music Group Launch: Guster, DMB, Roots, More
GREEN MUSIC GROUPS CELEBRATES OFFICIAL LAUNCH WITH LA CONCERT
Guster |
Green Music Group (GMG), a coalition of environmental non-profit Reverb, celebrated its official launch over the last weekend in January in Hollywood, CA. The high-profile coalition brings together musicians, industry leaders and music fans to create widespread environmental change within the music industry and around the globe.
To celebrate its launch, Green Music Group founding members and friends gathered at Jane’s House in Hollywood for live performances by members of Dave Matthews Band, Guster, and Maroon 5. Guests were treated to eco-friendly appetizers and drinks provided by Shin’s BBQ, VeeV, ZICO, Eel River, and Newton’s Vineyard.
“Tonight we celebrated a watershed moment – music industry leaders and fans coming together to create significant change. Reverb has been helping individual artists and venues green their tours and shows for the last six years. We wanted to do more – our founding artists, venues and labels wanted to do more, and our fans were calling on us to take the lead,” said Guster guitarist/vocalist Adam Gardner, who founded Reverb with his wife, environmentalist Lauren Sullivan. “Green Music Group answers that call by using the collective power of the music community to bring about real lasting environmental change.”
Since 2004, Reverb has greened over 80 major music tours while conducting grassroots outreach to over 10 million music fans. The nonprofit group has also worked with various entities within the music world from record labels to radio stations. Green Music Group will build upon what Reverb has already accomplished, creating and implementing industry-wide green guidelines and standards while providing a dynamic online community where fans can take action and learn more about environmental issues.
“DMB has been working with Reverb for a number of years to green our tours and have seen amazing results both backstage and from our fans’ response,” said Dave Matthews Band. “We are excited to exponentially multiply these results by joining forces with other like-minded bands through the Green Music Group.”
Prominent music industry leaders agree. “We are proud to have several of our venues as Founding Members of GMG,” expressed Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino. “We look forward to continued growth of our environmental efforts to follow the example set by these standouts and the other founders of Green Music Group.”
GMG also participated in The Roots‘ 6th Annual Jam Session later Saturday night as co-hosts with the band – also a GMG founding member. Widely considered to be one of the most electrifying nights held during award season, this year’s Roots Jam Session was a who’s who of music’s best paired. GMG joined The Roots for a continuous, spontaneous night of musical celebration and environmentalism for a packed, invite-only audience where guests were invited to screen print recycled t-shirts and where artists signed limited edition Jam Session posters, the proceeds of which will benefit GMG.
Born out of the Internet age, Green Music Group has launched GreenMusicGroup.org, which provides fans and artists with a vibrant online community to engage in regular calls-to-action, beginning with the GMG Challenge, set to launch next month. As additional incentive to join, fans who sign up in the next month are entered to win one of three eco-friendly guitars signed by GMG Founding Artists.
“Green Music Group’s incredible reach and deep connection to young people has the power to be a major megaphone for our organization’s environmental campaigns,” said Mike Brune, incoming Executive Director of the Sierra Club, a partner of GMG. Other non-profit partners include: Oxfam America, Union of Concerned Scientists, Hip Hop Caucus, HeadCount, DoSomething.org, StopGlobalWarming.org, Music For Relief, Climate Counts, and Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance.
