Russia and Nicaragua have signed an agreement on visa-free travel between the two countries, in Moscow’s latest move to increase its ties in Latin America. In Managua on July 28, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin signed the agreement granting visa-free travel for Nicaraguans to Russia, making reciprocal the rights already granted to Russians in April. Also signed were agreements on energy projects and boosting bilateral trade.

Russian leader visits S Ossetia

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has arrived in Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia, his spokeswoman says.
It is the first time that Mr Medvedev has visited South Ossetia since Russia and Georgia fought a brief war last year over the territory.
The anniversary of the beginning of the conflict is less than a month away.
Russia is one of only two countries to have recognised the independence of South Ossetia and of Georgia’s other breakaway region, Abkhazia.
