Efterklang: Magic Chairs

EFTERKLANG TO MAKE 4AD LABEL DEBUT WITH MAGIC CHAIRS, OUT 2/23

Efterklang

Newly signed to 4AD, the Copenhagen-based quartet Efterklang make their label debut with Magic Chairs, their third full-length studio album, out February 23.

Efterklang are Mads Brauer (electronics and various instruments), Casper Clausen (vocals and various instruments), Thomas Husmer (drums and trumpet) and Rasmus Stolberg (bass and guitar).

Removing themselves from their home city and heading to Aarhus’ Feedback Recording Studio, the band recorded basic tracks as a band (drums, bass, guitars and piano), replicating the live set-up from where the songs had initially taken form. Later, back in Copenhagen, orchestral flourishes were added and guest musicians were called upon (including their touring band members – Peter Broderick, Heather W. Broderick, Frederik Teige and Daniel James).

For even greater clarity of sound, British engineer and producer Gareth Jones (Nick cave and The Bad Seeds, Depeche Mode, Interpol, Mogwai, Grizzly Bear, Wire and more) was drafted in for mixing duties to work alongside their in-house electronics wizard in Brauer.

Check out the MP3 for “Modern Drift” here.

Yeasayer: 2010 Tour Dates

YEASAYER TO TOUR IN SUPPORT OF ODD BLOOD

Yeasayer

Yeasayer is pleased to announce a full U.S. tour beginning in April to support their fantastic upcoming full-length, Odd Blood. This follows three U.S. dates in February – a performance at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles and two already sold old shows in New York City, at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Odd Blood will be available February 9 via Secretly Canadian (Mute elsewhere). First brewed in the frosty hills of Woodstock, NY at the Marotta lair, then transferred to the steely sweeps of NYC, Odd Blood took many layers to finalize, but with all things Yeasayer the outcome is spectacular. Filled with the band’s own take on pop pleasures and experimentation, the band has once again carved its own path through that ice cold glacier that is modern pop/rock.

Elliott Brood: Album/DatesFor Fans of MMJ, DBTs…

Elliott Brood Expose the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857 on Stunning Album

Elliott Brood

Armed with a ukulele, acoustic guitar and banjo as well as percussion and bass pedals,
Elliott Brood combustible live performances feature a big, heavy sound that belies their instrumentation (they’ve been described as “Johnny Cash meets The Pixies”). In Canada, where Mountain Meadows topped the college charts for 21 weeks, Elliott Brood has won over fans not only with their songwriting but with their showmanship and tent revival-esque live appearances.

Kind Words:

“Loosely based around a 19th century massacre in Utah, their album Mountain Meadows is delivered with exuberance and skill, with Mark Sasso growling like Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood.” -UNCUT * * * *

“A breathtaking amalgam of The Band’s sense of history and My Morning Jacket’s metallic country.” -Q Magazine ****

“Elliott Brood do for pre-war folk music what bands like The White Stripes and Black Keys do for blues.” -Globe and Mail ****

“It’s bleak, it’s black, it’s brilliant.” -The Sun

“The band members are masters at creating compelling narratives with such eerie ambiance you can’t help but pick road grit from your teeth.” -The Coast

The album title would seem to evoke a pastoral, peaceful scene but it actually refers to the Mountain Meadows Massacre, an 1857 event that left 120 men, women and children dead at the hands of militant Mormons and Native American tribesmen. Songwriters Mark Sasso and Casey Laforet were fascinated not with the tragedy but its aftermath – the mystery of what happened to the children who witnessed the massacre but were young enough to be allowed to live and what might have happened to them and their ancestors. The album’s songs all grow out of this theme – a sort of “what if” musical novella that works as postcard to an era and time.

Released in Canada in 2008 on Six Shooter Records, Mountain Meadows topped the Canadian college charts for 21 weeks and was nominated for a Juno award (the band’s second nomination). The album was also shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Prize for best Canadian album of the year based solely on artistic merit.

Do Make Say Think: Other Truths

Do Make Say Think
Announce New Album, Other Truths, Out October 20

Do Make Say Think

The sixth full-length from the ever-expanding and contracting Toronto quintet Do Make Say Think features four long-form tracks, three of which clock in at over 10 minutes and all of which trace inimitable musical arcs that have made this band justly celebrated. The five members’ unique sonic palette and vibrant distillation of compositional forms have made Do Make Say Think some of the past decade’s most consistently rich and rewarding instrumental rock.

Bucking the trend towards diminishing attention spans, immediate gratification and snappy digital singles, DMST admirably stick to their roots and allow the vines that spring from their fertile musical garden to wind, curl and climb for as long as required. More than ever, the players keep their heads down, creating wonderful multi-movement instrumental works (with the occasional wordless vocal passage, courtesy of guest singers Akron/Family and Lullabye Arkestra). The songs off Other Truth overflow with attention to tone and timbre and are animated by unfussy yet ornate harmony, melody and polyrhythmic soul. The album represents the first time since the band’s debut (recorded over a dozen years ago) that they’ve found themselves with an entire collection of songs that unfold organically over long duration.

Do Make Say Think has always managed to gather, balance and synthesize various poles simultaneously – ragged/precise, dirty/clean, atmospheric/stratospheric – forging sonic narratives that combine broad strokes and clusters of detail. Perhaps more than their overtly ‘post-modern’ commingling of various musical genres (psych, jazz, dub, folk) this less conspicuous, indefinable ability to maintain such a consistently enthralling fusion of instincts is the true mark of the band, yielding a music that sounds and feels natural and human. Certainly a key part of this unquantifiable equation is the band’s self-production, which has shaped their sound from the beginning. Led by Ohad Benchetrit and his home studio in Toronto, along with Charles Spearin and Justin Small, DMST has developed a canny and novel toolbox of recording and mixing techniques that contributes significantly to their sonic identity.

Other Truths is available on CD in a custom gate-fold cardstock jacket and in a first pressing on deluxe 180 gram vinyl that includes a limited edition poster (unique to the vinyl package), an artwork insert printed on heavyweight translucent paper and a CD copy of the album all packed in a thick 24pt. paperboard record jacket. The album is also available digitally.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart: EP, Single and Tour

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart Announce

Higher Than The Stars EP Plus The Single Come Saturday

Not content to rest on the laurels of having one of the best and most talked-about albums of 2009, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are back with the Higher Than The Stars. The EP features four brand-new songs that do what the band does best – breathe fresh life into indie-pop with their exuberance, charm and of course quality tunes.

Higher Than The Stars races along on arpeggiated keyboards and quickly strummed guitars, a perfect pop
nugget that could be ripped from Robert Smith‘s songbook. Its unstoppable energy is pure Pains, though,
and the band hopes to see a lot of ear-to-ear grins when the band busts the EP out on tour.
