Styx: Regeneration, Volume I Grand Illusion/Pieces of 8 Shows

BAND WILL PERFORM THE GRAND ILLUSION AND PIECES OF EIGHT IN THEIR
ENTIRETY

Styx

It’s the tour Styx fans have
been waiting for. Styx–Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitars), James “JY” Young (vocals, guitars), Lawrence Gowan
(vocals, keyboards), Todd Sucherman (drums)
and Ricky Phillips (bass), along with the occasional
surprise appearance by original bassist Chuck Panozzo—are getting ready to head out on the U.S. concert
trail again this year. However, for this round of dates, the band has an extra-special treat planned – it won’t be a
typical Styx show. Along with the classic hits, the band will be performing 1977′s The Grand Illusion and
1978′s Pieces of Eight in their entirety. Both albums spawned such hit singles and Classic Rock radio
standards as “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).”

And as icing on the cake, a seven-song EP, entitled Regeneration, Volume 1, containing six newly
re-recorded classics–”Come Sail Away,” “Crystal Ball,” “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” “Lorelei,” “The
Grand Illusion” and “Sing For The Day”—and a brand new track, “Difference In The World,” will be available for sale
at every stop along “The Grand Illusion/Pieces Of Eight” October/November tour route.

Alice in Chains: N. American Tour

ALICE IN CHAINS ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR, NEW SINGLE “YOUR DECISION” HITS RADIO DECEMBER 7

Alice in Chains

Alice In Chains have announced dates for a North American tour set to kick off at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver on February 2, 2010. Tickets go on sale December 4 and 5. The band is touring in support of its critically acclaimed new album Black Gives Way To Blue (Virgin/EMI), which entered Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart at No. 5, with first-week sales exceeding 126,000 copies.

The band’s electrifying set list will spotlight classic hits and new favorites, including new single “Your Decision,” which hits radio December 7. The band recently shot a video for the song with director Stephen Schuster, who they previously worked with for the video “A Looking In View.”

Los Angeles-based AIC fans can catch the band performing at the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas show at the Gibson Amphitheatre on December 12. Tickets will go on sale Saturday, November 21 and proceeds will benefit two local charities, Para Los Ninos and the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center. On November 24, the band will also perform three songs acoustically for a special Yahoo! Maximum Performance, which can be seen on Yahoo! Music.

In other news, Alice In Chains recently released a Black Gives Way To Blue iPhone app, which features full songs from the album, music videos, news, photos, social networking and much more. The app separates itself from the pack with an impressive level of interactivity; its custom-built functionality allows fans to interact with each of the album’s 11 tracks via a touch, drag and hold feature that reveals hidden visual gems. A demo of the app (which was designed and developed by Mobile Roadie, Streetwise Concepts & Culture and EMI Music) can be viewed here.

The band (guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, guitarist/vocalist William DuVall, drummer Sean Kinney, and bassist Mike Inez) is currently touring Europe and recently performed on the U.K. television show Later … With Jools Holland. The international dates followed a sold-out U.S. buzz tour and performances on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and back-to-back nights on Jimmy Kimmel Live. All three shows saw AIC perform chart-topping lead single “Check My Brain,” which hit No. 1 on the Modern, Active and Rock formats, and was hailed by Spin magazine as “one of the catchiest songs of Alice In Chains’ history.”

EOTO: Fall Tour & New Album

EOTO: Fall Tour & New Album

EOTO

While the genre of live electronica is relatively new on the music circuit, few are breaking the boundaries of live producing and improvisation like EOTO. Fusing elements of live instrumentation, house music, dubstep and electro into their dance ready sound, the band will be taking the country by storm beginning in late September for their perennial fall tour, performing 33 consecutive nights in a row.

Consisting of Michael Travis and Jason Hann of The String Cheese Incident, the duo mixes the organic sounds of live drums, keyboards, vocals, bass, percussion, and guitar through a variety of programs and gadgets to create a style of music that is more likely found in a dance club, then a live music theater. What sets EOTO apart from other artists in this emerging genre is how the music is created. While some artists may spend hours pre-mixing samples and elements of music for their live show, EOTO uses nothing pre-recorded, giving them the ability to approach each song with on-the-spot spontaneity and 100% live improvisation.

Beginning in late September and performing every single night in October, EOTO will hit the road with their long-awaited studio EP, Fire the Lazers!! This eleven-track journey into dubstep, electro and house music showcases their talents and skill in a growing dimension of music. In true EOTO spirit the album was produced with nothing planned or rehearsed, capturing only the best of what makes up their original sound. The album will be available on the road and by digital download in October of 2009.

Steve Kimock Crazy Tour:
Kimock Designs New Guitar

Steve Kimock Crazy Engine Hits The Road This Fall

Kimock To Join The Chris Berry Trio For Select Dates

Steve Kimock Crazy Engine

Steve Kimock is a busy guy. In between a seemingly endless touring schedule, Kimock has somehow managed to design an electric guitar with legendary guitar-smith Scott Walker, compose a score to a 1920′s silent film, plan for a three-show stint with world music guru Chris Berry and still muster enough strength to cross the country with the Crazy Engine.

Starting in 2007, Scott Walker and Steve Kimock began discussing the ergonomics of a perfect guitar. How it sits in the lap, how it hangs on the shoulder, how the strings present themselves, etc. The guitar player and craftsman came up with a design that offers both a unique look and sound. For more info on this collaborative guitar creation visit scottwalkerguitars.com.

As the New York Guitar Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this January, a series of special shows at Manhattan’s Merkin Concert Hall on Thursday nights will showcase an artist or ensemble scoring an early classic film. On January 21, the festival will present Kimock playing to Buster Keaton’s classic silent film Cops. That same night, Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon will provide the sonic backdrop to Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush.

As an artist known to bring together many genres, Kimock will play a string of dates in September with the Chris Berry Trio. The Trio will also feature Michael Kang (The String Cheese Incident) and drum and bass from the Brazilian Girls.

Kyle Hollingsworth Album: And Tour w/ Zach Gill

KYLE HOLLINGSWORTH BAND ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR DATES

INCLUDING WEST COAST SHOWS WITH ZACH GILL

HOLLINGSWORTH RELEASES SECOND SOLO ALBUM, THEN THERE’S NOW, ON SEPTEMBER 15

Kyle Hollingsworth

For more than a decade, as keyboardist for Colorado’s beloved String Cheese Incident, Kyle Hollingsworth has consistently proven one of the most innovative and virtuosic musicians on the American jamband scene. Now, with the September 15 release of Then There’s Now (SCI Fidelity Records), his first album since the band announced a hiatus in 2007, Hollingsworth extends his reach into areas that will both delight longtime admirers and lock in countless new ones. Emphasizing his considerable songwriting skills and incorporating a plethora of surprises, Then There’s Now marks the true emergence of Kyle Hollingsworth as a solo artist.

Kyle Hollingsworth Band (featuring Dave Watts of The Motet – drums, Garrett Sayers of The Motet – bass, and Dan Schwindt – guitar) tours Midwest and West Coast states this fall in support of Hollingsworth’s new album release. Brushfire Records recording artist Zach Gill (ALO, Jack Johnson) joins Hollingsworth for the October run of West Coast dates and Colorado’s Euforquestra returns home to support the September’s Midwest dates. A limited number SCI Fan Club tickets will be available through pre-sale at www.kylehollingsworth.com beginning Wednesday, July 29 at 10 a.m. PDT. General on sale begins Saturday, August 1 at 10 a.m. PDT at www.kylehollingsworth.com and at respective venues.

Check out kylehollingsworth.com/thentheresnow for videos, audio and lots more info.

Kyle’s complete list of fall tour dates is as follows:

09.11 Iowa City Yacht Club Iowa City, IA w/ Euforquestra

09.12 Martyrs’ Chicago, IL w/ Euforquestra

09.13 The Water Bowl Muncie, IN Wuhnurth Music Festival

09.17 Camp Zoe Salem, MO

09.18 Mishawaka Bellvue, CO co-bill w/Jeff Austin & Friends

09.19 Fox Theatre Boulder, CO CD release party

Following Dates are co-billed with Zach Gill:

10.07 Winston’s Beach Club San Diego, CA

10.08 The Mint Los Angeles, CA

10.09 SOhO Santa Barbara, CA

10.10 The Independent San Francisco, CA

10.11 HopMonk Tavern Sebastopol, CA

10.13 The Red Fox Tavern Eureka, CA

10.14 WOW Hall Eugene, OR

10.15 The Triple Door Seattle, WA

10.16 Wild Buffalo Bellingham, WA

10.17 Mississippi Studios Portland, OR

For Hollingsworth, who has recently been more prolific than ever before, the title of Then There’s Now offers the first clue as to where he stands today. Then There’s Now undeniably draws on Hollingsworth’s past affiliation with “The Cheese,” using his previous work as a jumping off point-yes, there are some intoxicating, if more concise, jams to be savored. But the album’s “now” component-irresistible melodies, poignant lyrics and fine-tuned song construction, plus a willingness to infuse the tunes with elements of pop, jazz, electronica, hip-hop and more-transports Hollingsworth into musical realms he’s never before explored at length.

Lenore Skenazy: Why The Nice Man Didn’t Save the Toddler

Worse, in a suspicious climate like that – not unlike our own – adults grow wary of any involvement with kids who aren’t theirs.

Crude guess

Andrew Walker
Economics correspondent, BBC World Service

Oil pump

The oil market is volatile at the best of times. But the last year has been extraordinary even by those standards.

A year ago the price came close to $150 a barrel. At that price even many oil producers thought the commodity overpriced.

And yet, some analysts were forecasting $200 a barrel before long and oil producers were under international political pressure to do something.

Producers, however, had such little spare capacity that there was not very much they could do.

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil producer, hosted a conference in Jeddah in June to discuss the problem.

He needn’t have worried, at least not about high prices.

In the event, a recession undermined demand for energy and sent the price diving. Since then it has dipped below $40 and is now back to about $70.

Oil’s impact

Oil prices have been a factor, sometimes the most important one, in several recessions over the last few decades.

But was oil the reason for the recession this time

While the oil price was high it added to business costs and left consumers with less to spend on other items, including perhaps mortgage repayments.

So the price of oil might have contributed to the financial crisis, or at least exacerbated it.

Price rebound

The subsequent partial recovery in the price reflects several developments.

Recent news suggests the economic situation might have stabilised (or at least is deteriorating more slowly), which suggests demand for oil might do so too.

Central banks policies to expand the money supply and heavy government borrowing have begun to raise concerns about future inflation.

Buying oil and other commodities could provide some protection against that for investors.

Opec, the oil cartel, has recently cut production and member countries – unusually – implemented many of those cuts.

Member states are often tempted to produce more than their allocation to get the extra cash.

The relatively high compliance by Opec this time round probably reflects the alarm they felt as the price dropped rapidly.

"It’s amazing what a good dose of fear can do," says analyst Julian Lee, at the Centre for Global Energy Studies.

Reason why

There is also a view that the wild swings in prices are due to speculation in the commodities markets.

Oil pipelines

It is a perennial complaint from Opec.

This may be partly a position intended to deflect attention from Opec at times when prices are rising, whose line is "don’t blame us it’s those speculators."

But it is not just Opec. Some analysts think there is something to it, others says the price swings largely reflect what they call fundamentals.

However it is certainly true to say that there is speculation in the oil market. But does speculation really explain the big price swings Opinion is divided.

Where next

Opec’s Secretary General Abdallah Salem el Badri said recently that $70 was a price that didn’t damage the economy, but did allow Opec members to invest and get a reasonable income from their oil.

But many analysts think that some countries need a higher price – $80 or more – for the government spending they want to implement.

There is also a question of whether a lower price provides sufficient incentive for investment in exploration and exploitation of new oil fields.

Forecasting the oil price is a risky business.

But it is reasonably safe to say that one of the key factors will be when and how strong is the global economic recovery. Opec’s actions will also be important.
