Bassist Johnny Grubb Joins Emmitt-Nershi Band

FORMER RAILROAD EARTH BASSIST FILLS VACANT SLOT

Emmitt-Nershi Band

With Tyler Grant recently announcing his departure from the Emmitt-Nershi Band, fans have
been anxiously awaiting
the announcement of the new bass player for the band. Today, it has been announced that Johnny Grubb
of Railroad Earth will be filling the
spot. Read Johnny’s official message below.

“Hello, World! Rather than make someone else come up with an announcement for who the new bassist will be, I
thought I’d try to follow in Tyler’s gracious footsteps and do it myself.

My name is Johnny Grubb. I went to school at Appalachian State University and saw Leftover Salmon
many, many times my first couple of years there. After ASU, I spent a good year rolling burritos, washing dishes and
playing bluegrass in my hometown of Atlanta before serendipitously running into John Skehan of Railroad Earth one
night at a gig of ours. They just happened to be on the lookout for a new bassist and long story short, I spent 7
years in that band, playing several metric tons of great music and meeting lots of great folks all over the
country.

One of the folks I met and had the good fortune of playing with on many occasions was Mr. Billy Nershi. RRE was
signed to SCI Fidelity Records for a number of years and we got to be friends with a bunch of the SCI/Mad House
folks in time. RRE always was and still is a full-time commitment. I just couldn’t keep it up with the birth of my
second boy last January, so I bowed out a year ago and spent this past year getting a web development consultancy
off the ground, getting to know the virtues and vices of the various open source software scenes out there and being
home with my wife and boys for the first time ever. The itch to play some bass didn’t come back until just a few
months ago after getting into the most recent Larry Keel and Stringduster’s CDs.

In any event, I cruised by this website last month to see what they were working with from a technical standpoint.
The meaning of Tyler’s announcement that he was leaving didn’t really hit me until the next day, at least not the part
where I should give Billy a call and see who they have lined up. I wasn’t looking for another full-time gig, nor to be
in another rock band per se, so after speaking with Billy and Drew it seemed like the parameters were pretty well
lined up for everybody and here I am!

Just to put a bow on top of everything, I met Andy years ago when he was with Larry Keel and didn’t find out until
the last few weeks that he was a member of the Broke Mountain Bluegrass band with Travis from the Infamous
Stringdusters and my good friend Anders from Greensky Bluegrass. It’s nice to be a part of this small world and I
want to thank my new bandmates for having me aboard. I will see you all soon.”

JamBase Questionnaire: Chatham County Line

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights in the jam scene (and beyond). Last time we heard from Truth & Salvage Co., and this time we visit with a bright light on the rock scene.

A lot of the most talented folks toil away without drawing much attention. The work is more important than the spotlight, and the end results have possess solidity and endurance fame whores will never know. North Carolina’s fabulous Chatham County Line has consistently cranked out some of the best Americana of the past decade. Though often seen as a bluegrass outfit by ill informed sources, CCL have huge gobs of pop smarts and rock subtext inside their acoustic leaning, twang-inflected sound.

Their fifth release, Wildwood (arriving July 13 on Yep Roc), is their first self-produced effort and shows more than ever that Chatham County Line is dedicated to making great music, regardless of what anyone else calls it. Carried along by the bone deep lilt of guitarist-singer-songwriter Dave Wilson, Wildwood (and the rest of their catalogue) represents what happens when a band really knows how to play their instruments and keeps their ears wide-open to the entire American musical landscape. Anyone smitten by Levon Helm, Yonder Mountain String Band, Hot Rize, Leftover Salmon and the like is cheating themselves to miss out on CCL. (Dennis Cook)

Here’s what Dave Wilson had to say to our inquiries.

Bluegrass In Paradise Fest Crested Butte w/ Emmitt, Nershi

BLUEGRASS COMES HOME TO CRESTED BUTTE; A NEW ROOTS GATHERING FINDS ITSELF IN
PARADISE

Drew Emmitt

For thirteen years, the Crested Butte Music Festival (CBMF) has turned Crested Butte into one big concert
hall in the summer, with music resounding from outdoors venues, hotels, stunning private homes, churches and
barns. This summer, for the first time, CBMF will host Bluegrass in Paradise, a five-day festival for one of
the most popular musical genres in the American West. From July 6-10, both traditional bluegrass and “newgrass”
will be showcased in a range of events: a three-day camp for kids, workshops for adults, jam sessions, children’s
performances and six top-level bands. For five days of foot-stomping fun, learning, and camaraderie, Bluegrass in Paradise will keep festival goers on their feet.

The host of the Festival is internationally acclaimed newgrass star – and resident of Crested Butte – Drew Emmitt. Emmitt is not only
one of the most energetic and innovative mandolin players in bluegrass today, he is also a singer, storyteller, and
master of multiple stringed instruments. He has played with the band Leftover Salmon, and most recently, the
Drew Emmitt Band. This jack-of-all-roots-trades will be a stimulating guide through the five days of Bluegrass in
Paradise.

2010 Performer Lineup:

Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys: Stanley, The Godfather of bluegrass, is still the best banjo picker and tenor singer in bluegrass music
after 55 years in the business. As a recording artist, he has performed on more than 170 albums, tapes and CDs. He has written countless songs both individually and together with his brother, the late Carter Stanley. Ralph has played throughout the United States and the world, including several tours of Japan.

Emmitt-Nershi Band:
Festival host Drew Emmitt will perform with Billy Nershi, the founding member and acoustic guitarist of The String Cheese Incident, an American
jam band from Boulder, Colorado. The Emmitt-Nershi Band will feature Emmitt on mandolin and vocals, Nershi on
acoustic guitar and vocals, Andy Thorn who plays with both Larry Keel and the Drew Emmitt
band on banjo, and Tyler Grant from the Drew Emmitt Band on bass.

Bearfoot: Bluegrass music
from Alaska? Not just any bluegrass, but some of the best. Telluride Band Contest winner Bearfoot has a fresh
approach to acoustic music that features twin fiddles, fast-picking mandolin and guitar, upright bass, and beautiful
harmony vocals. Bearfoot’s exuberant stage presence elicits an appeal that bridges generations.

Shannon Whitworth:
Shannon Whitworth, a founding member of the acclaimed acoustic quartet The Biscuit Burners, has set a high bar
for Americana music in the last few years. Her definitive songwriting and captivating voice have earned her national
praise. Shannon’s debut solo release, No Expectations, is pure, strong, and heartfelt, catching
the ears and touching the hearts of the most unsuspecting bystander.

Blue Highway: Now in its
sixteenth year as a band, Grammy-nominated Blue Highway is indisputably one of the most esteemed and influential
groups in contemporary bluegrass. With a deep bench of virtuosic songwriters, vocalists and instrumentalists, Blue
Highway’s hallmark is an unwavering commitment to the ensemble, the “democracy of the band” that makes Blue
Highway a powerhouse.

Spring Creek: In 2009,
Spring Creek joined the ranks of Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys, Kenny & Amanda Smith and Steep Canyon Rangers as a Rebel Records
recording artist. Hailing from Lyons Colorado, Spring Creek’s creative original songs and meticulous harmony vocals
made it the first Colorado-based band to be signed by Rebel.

Jerry Joseph | 03.25-03.27 | Big Sky Run

Words & Images by: Phil Santala

Jerry Joseph & The Jackmormons :: 03.25.10 :: Knotty Pine :: Victor, ID

Jerry Joseph & The Jackmormons:: 03.26.10-03.27.10 :: Whiskey Jack’s :: Big Sky, MT

Jerry Joseph :: 03.26 :: Big Sky, MT

In a barnstorming blitz of ski towns Jerry
Joseph & The Jackmormons
returned to the greater Yellowstone area in promotion of their new live album, Badlandia. Fresh off the heels of a successful Stockholm Syndrome tour (see JamBase’s raves here), Jerry came out guns blazing, and firing on all cylinders.

Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon/Great American Taxi once called the Teton Valley the cultural center of the universe. The hub of that center would have be the Knotty Pine in Victor. “Fury” > “Frost Heaves” was a fitting combo for those of us who have lived in the valley and combated the deteriorating road conditions on Teton Pass this winter. But, it was the heavy handed “Hammer” followed later by “Soda Man” with an extended drum riff building the middle stanzas during the second set that really blew the hair back of those in attendance.

Just a few hours up the road, along a drive Jerry said he has enjoyed making much of his life, is where the band really hit their stride. Whiskey Jack’s at the base of Lone Peak is just a few miles (as the crow files) from Bandito’s, where Badlandia was recorded live last August. There must be something in the air or water in these parts that really gets the Jackmormons’ gears a-grinding. The Friday show was electrifying, and the Saturday show absolutely blew the roof off of the place.

The pace in Big Sky was set early with the third song Friday night, “Drive,” which often shows up in the tail end of a set, and typically a second set at that. I was able to witness a unique exchange during the “Altar in a Box” > “North” > “Altar in a Box.” As Jerry led the bloodthirsty crowd into “North,” chairs were practically bouncing off the walls. “Ask me if I give a…,” cried out Jerry, as “…FUCK!” wailed back from the majority of the audience. The two guys in front of me were absolutely floored by this exchange. “Wow,” one said to the other, “that’s not the kind of sing-along you get at Phish!”

Jerry Joseph :: 03.27 :: Big Sky, MT

The treat Friday evening was the “Brother Michael” > “Big Sky Country” > “Presence of the Lord/Rama Cita jam” > “Brother Michael” combo. “Big Sky Country” is a song by Chris Whitley, whom Jerry Joseph toured with in 2002. Whitley, who passed away in 2005, was a big influence on Jerry, and the nod was appreciated by the audience. The locals know that Montana is “Big Sky Country,” at least according to the state propaganda machine and our license plates. Hardcore Jerry Joseph fans from out of the area were also quick to point out that the song had not been played before to their knowledge, and if it had been covered, none in attendance had witnessed it. Another cover, Bob Marley’s “One Drop,” truly hit us from leftfield, rounding out Friday night nicely and propelling us ravenously into Saturday.

The capacity crowd at Saturday’s sold out show was in for some treats, too. During the “Revelator” > “Second Skin” opener, Jerry broke a string on his well worn, workhorse, “Support Your Local Hell’s Angels” guitar. He finished the first set on a new-looking blue substitute, though the sound remained pure Jerry. “Henry” featured magical teases from Whitley’s “Big Sky Country” and The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” in the middle of “Whatever You Got in the Basket.” But, it was the slow “Climb To Safety” that would really hold us over through set break.

Better still, the second set focused on music to get you though the night and not just a set break. The greater Yellowstone area – around Grand Teton National Park and all the surrounding mountains of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming – is the kind of place where life is like water. That’s just how the three day run closed, too: “Kind of Place” > “Light is Like Water” > “2 Balloons” > “Light is Like Water.” The combination got our feet moving before sending us out the door knowing that “Supper’s Ready” down the “Hallelujah Trail.”

Cornmeal: New Live Album 3/1

Cornmeal Releases New Live Album, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I on March 1, 2010

Cornmeal

Cornmeal has announced the release of their new live album, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I.

The album was recorded live throughout the winter of 2009 at Martyrs’ in Chicago, IL. Unlike Cornmeal’s three previous albums, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I captures the band in its raw, intense format, bouncing through song after song of fast-paced, fierce originals and extensive improvised jams that showcase the immense talent and
connectivity that have gained them so much fan appeal from coast to coast.

Formed over 10 years ago, Cornmeal has grown from humble beginnings into a nationally recognized live music institution. Heavily influenced by American roots and folk music, Cornmeal blends lightning fast tempos and harmonies into an unrivaled live performance that continues to expand upon the five-piece acoustic-electric groups’ vast musical repertoire.

While steeped in the tradition of John Hartford and New Grass Revival, Cornmeal continues
to forge their own path, pushing the boundaries of bluegrass, Americana and folk for a whole new generation of music lovers. With a rapidly growing fan base and ever-evolving sound, Cornmeal challenges the recipe of the bluegrass sound and live performance.

In 2008, the band won its first Jammy award for New Groove of the Month. The band has graced the stage at almost every major festival across the country including Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, All Good, High Sierra, 10K Lakes, Del Fest, Summercamp, and Telluride Nightgrass just to name a few. They have also been fortunate enough to perform with
many influential bands including Leftover Salmon, Sam Bush, John Hartford, Little Feat, The Del McCoury Band, moe., and Dark Star Orchestra among others.

Cornmeal tour dates available here.
