Trevor Hall: Album Out Now Tour w/ Franti & Matisyahu

TREVOR HALL CONTINUES HIS SUCCESSFUL CROSS-COUNTRY TOUR

FEATURING UPCOMING SHOWS WITH MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD, COLBIE CAILLAT AND MATISYAHU

HALL’S SELF-TITLED VANGUARD RECORDS DEBUT AVAILABLE NOW

“I just wanna melt away in all its grace, drift away to that sacred place where there’s no more you and me no more they and we just unity.”

From “Unity,” written by Trevor Hall and Matisyahu

Trevor Hall

After a series of sold-out shows over the summer, Trevor Hall is hitting the road again – this time with friends and artists who have also lent their voices on Hall’s new self-titled Vanguard CD (check it out for free below). Hall is on tour now with Michael Franti & Spearhead. On the heels of that tour, Hall joins up with his friend Colbie Caillat for the month of October. Caillat is featured on Hall’s new recording of “The Lime Tree.” Hall will be performing special acoustic sets with percussionist Chris Steele on the run with Caillat, and then rejoins his band for the month of November with dear friend Matisyahu, who co-wrote and performs on Hall’s song “Unity.” Hall also performed and co-wrote four songs that appear on Matisyahu’s new album, Light.

Trevor Hall is a breath of fresh air in today’s music scene. His new album, produced by Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Kate Voegele, Marc Broussard), embodies a soulfulness, depth and passion far beyond his 22 years. Hall combines a unique musical mix of reggae and acoustic rock that serve as a landscape for his thought-provoking, inspiring lyrics.

EOTO: Fall Tour & New Album

EOTO: Fall Tour & New Album

EOTO

While the genre of live electronica is relatively new on the music circuit, few are breaking the boundaries of live producing and improvisation like EOTO. Fusing elements of live instrumentation, house music, dubstep and electro into their dance ready sound, the band will be taking the country by storm beginning in late September for their perennial fall tour, performing 33 consecutive nights in a row.

Consisting of Michael Travis and Jason Hann of The String Cheese Incident, the duo mixes the organic sounds of live drums, keyboards, vocals, bass, percussion, and guitar through a variety of programs and gadgets to create a style of music that is more likely found in a dance club, then a live music theater. What sets EOTO apart from other artists in this emerging genre is how the music is created. While some artists may spend hours pre-mixing samples and elements of music for their live show, EOTO uses nothing pre-recorded, giving them the ability to approach each song with on-the-spot spontaneity and 100% live improvisation.

Beginning in late September and performing every single night in October, EOTO will hit the road with their long-awaited studio EP, Fire the Lazers!! This eleven-track journey into dubstep, electro and house music showcases their talents and skill in a growing dimension of music. In true EOTO spirit the album was produced with nothing planned or rehearsed, capturing only the best of what makes up their original sound. The album will be available on the road and by digital download in October of 2009.

Trampled by Turtles: Tour

Trampled by Turtles Announce Extensive Fall Tour

Trampled by Turtles

Rising roots band Trampled by Turtles are headed out on a 40+ date fall tour. The coast to coast run is highlighted by headline shows at Minneapolis’ legendary rock club First Avenue, New York City’s hippest new theater 92Y Tribeca, and two nights at Denver’s Bluebird Theater.

Separating the band from the pack is the contrast of their lightening fast punk-influenced barn-burners and their lonesome Townes Van Zandt-inspired ballads. Artvoice Buffalo had this to say: “Their most recent release, Duluth, mirrors the raw intensity of their live performances, which are sure to leave audiences simultaneously raising hell and crying in their beers.”

Music can be streamed on Trampled by Turtles’ new website: www.trampledbyturtles.com.

Brother Ali Tour, MP3 &:Album w/ Chuck D & Ant

Brother Ali Announces New Album And North American Tour

Brother Ali

Brother Ali‘s last album, the critically acclaimed, The Undisputed Truth, was an album of bold statements and social awareness without being preachy. Ali’s new album, Us, Street Date September 22, has turned his gaze inward and starts to examine the human condition from the outside in. A profound, personal glimpse into a vulnerability seldom seen or heard in music, Us touches on the strengths and flaws of the human condition, exploring drug abuse, divorce, homophobia and many more topics that most people are scared to touch in their own lives, much less on an album for the world to see.

As with previous endeavors, the beats here are courtesy of Ant (of Atmosphere), whose production work seems to be getting more soulful and lush by the minute. The guest appearances only accentuate Brother Ali’s strengths, with Chuck D, Freeway, Joell Ortiz and Stokley Williams of Mint Condition making strong appearances.

In support of the new album, Ali is embarking on a North American tour of epic proportions, enlisting the help of labelmates and collaborators Evidence (of Dilated Peoples), BK One and Toki Wright.

Toure completes Man City switch

By Chris Bevan

Kolo Toure in action for Arsenal

Manchester City are close to signing Arsenal defender Kolo Toure for about £15m, BBC Sport understands.

City boss Mark Hughes, who failed to lure Chelsea centre-back John Terry to Eastlands last week, has long admired the Ivory Coast international.

Toure was first linked to a move to City in January but the Gunners insisted then that he was not for sale.

The 28-year-old has been with Arsenal since 2002 but failed to hold down a regular starting place last season.

Newspaper reports that Toure has agreed personal terms with City are premature but the deal is expected to be completed by the end of this week.

Toure has played 326 games for the Gunners, scoring 14 goals, and has two years left on his contract at the Emirates Stadium.

He handed in a transfer request in January, which was rejected by the Arsenal board.

Your thoughts on City’s pursuit of Toure

As well as missing out on Terry, Hughes had a £15m bid for Everton defender Joleon Lescott rejected earlier this month.

But the Gunners, who have already sold striker Emmanuel Adebayor to City for £25m this summer, have been more receptive to offers from the oil-rich Eastlands club.

On top of capturing Adebayor, City have already brought in former Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez, midfielder Gareth Barry from Aston Villa and striker Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn for a total of about £55m this summer. </p

Man City a small club – Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester City "are a small club with a small mentality".

The Scot is unimpressed by City signing Carlos Tevez when the Argentine left Old Trafford at the end of last season.

A city-centre billboard appeared soon after, saying "Carlos Tevez, welcome to Manchester" under a sky-blue graphic.

"It’s City isn’t it They’re a small club with a small mentality. All they can talk about is Manchester United; they can’t get away from it," he said.

"They think taking Carlos Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. It is poor stuff."

Manchester City have spent heavily in recent weeks, with Emmanuel Adebayor signing from Arsenal for about £25m, midfielder Barry coming from Aston Villa for £12m, Paraguayan frontman Santa Cruz costing £18m from Blackburn, and Tevez arriving for £25m.

Carlos Tevez billboard poster in Manchester

Ferguson, who was speaking on the Premier League champions’ pre-season tour in China, claimed that Adebayor had attempted to sign for Manchester United before committing to City.

"When someone offers you that kind of money, it is a big attraction," said Ferguson. "That is the reason they have gone there.

"At the last minute, from what I can gather, either Emmanuel Adebayor or his agent phoned us after they had agreed a deal with City and then did the same with Chelsea. He was desperate to get to either Chelsea or us."</p

Adebayor was ‘desperate’ not to join

• Ferguson says Adebayor offered himself to Manchester United
• ‘[City] are a small club with a small mentality,’ adds Scot

Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that Manchester City’s latest signing Emmanuel Adebayor was “desperate” to join Manchester United or Chelsea instead, and contacted both clubs even after he had agreed his £25m move to Eastlands.

Speaking to The Observer, the Manchester United manager – who also dismissed City as “a small club with a small mentality” – said the striker tried to engineer an alternative move away from Arsenal even as the transfer to City was being finalised.

“At the last minute, from what I can gather, either Emmanuel Adebayor or his agent phoned us after they had agreed a deal with City and then did the same with Chelsea. He was desperate to get to either Chelsea or us.”

Ferguson, speaking in Malaysia during United’s pre-season tour of the Far East, claimed that Adebayor’s move, and those of other high-profile players who have joined City this summer, was motivated by money, not ambition: “When someone offers you that kind of money, it’s a big attraction to people nowadays. That is the reason they have gone there.”

The 25-year-old said that “silverware and trophies” were behind his decision to join Mark Hughes’s side, but Ferguson does not think City will challenge, saying signing the likes of Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry may be the sum total of their success this season.

“Do you know what City’s biggest triumph is? It’s getting those players there. I don’t know if they will do anything with them,” he said. “It is not easy to get into that top four so the biggest success of all is to just get the players there.

“There will be three teams to beat. Ourselves, Liverpool and Chelsea will be very close together… The one who has the challenge this season is Arsène. He doesn’t have the money and how he uses the £25m from Adebayor will be very, very interesting,” he said of the Arsenal manager.

Continuing his attack on City, Ferguson also suggested that Hughes has focused too much on attack in his spending spree.

“For all the buying they have done, they still have to pick a team with balance. That won’t be easy for Mark. What’s he got, 10 strikers? So if he picks a squad to go to Chelsea he has to leave seven behind, or five at least.”

One of those strikers is Carlos Tevez, whose move to the blue half of Manchester prompted City to erect a billboard sporting an image of the Argentinian with the message “Welcome to Manchester” – a stunt Ferguson dismissed as typical of the club’s mentality.

“It’s City isn’t it? They are a small club with a small mentality,” he said. “All they can talk about is Manchester United, they can’t get away from it… They think taking Carlos Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. It is poor stuff.”

Bikes, mud and zero testosterone

Susan Greenwood gets downhill and dirty on a women-only mountain bike course in the French Alps

When it rains in Morzine it really means business. Locals probably don’t even have a word for “damp” in a vocabulary dominated by “torrential”, “downpour” and “total washout”. With nose pressed up against the misty window of the Kariboo cafe in neighbouring Les Gets, I survey the scene, latte in hand, and savour the smug satisfaction of being dry.

Strange, then, that two minutes later I find myself being hustled back on to my mountain bike and urged towards the chairlift. Rain doesn’t stop play, informs Jo Petterson, one of the pro downhill mountain bikers on hand for this week of female-only riding, it just means you get muddy. That’ll be why it’s called Dirtgirls, then.

The French Alps has long been a summer playground for mountain bikers, and the vast Portes du Soleil area is rightly regarded as the European epicentre of the sport. On the French side, along with Morzine and Les Gets, it encompasses the popular ski resorts of Avoriaz and Chatel, while also taking in the Swiss towns of Champéry, Morgins and Champoussin. The terrain is steep, the views – you’re near Mont Blanc – predictably humbling and the mountain biking little short of legendary.

Being a woman mountain biker can be quite challenging because you are pretty much guaranteed to be in the minority. Which makes arriving at Dirtgirls’ base for the week, Chalet Snion in the centre of Morzine, something of a revelation. Women outnumber men. The toilet seat is down. Conversation isn’t about the worst injury anyone has ever sustained and whether a video of the crash is on YouTube.

The women seated around the dinner table range from a jewellery designer to a chef, and while sizing me up for one of her fleet of Santa Cruz dual-suspension bikes, Dirtgirls’ creator, Sara Burdon, comments on my highlights. Camaraderie is established almost immediately. Gosh, I think as I trundle off to bed, ditching the testosterone and riding with girls is so much fun.

It’s not a sentiment I share the next day as I am unceremoniously spat off a corner on the infamous Pleney downhill track. At 3,300m long, with over 500m of vertical descent, it is a man-made lesson in facing your fears. Fionn Griffiths, the 2006 world downhill champion, decides it’s time for some cornering instruction. Seeking out a little-used track, she gets to work. And gradually, as the heavens open, the penny drops. Through a combination of patient demonstration and practice we start turning at speed against a backdrop of steaming mountains.

The Portes du Soleil marks out its mountain bike trails like its ski runs – head for a black and you had better have your wits about you. And like skiing, riding uphill is made a whole lot easier with the use of 13 bike-happy chairlifts. The bikes simply hang on the side and, after swaying rather precariously for the duration, are unhooked by lift attendants at the summit.

After the assault on the Pleney track we decide to ride some of the blue runs leading off the Les Chavannes lift in Les Gets. By now the mud is deep, the tree runs quite tight and the roots slippery. It is the sort of terrain I would usually try to avoid – even, shock horror, claiming my inferior strength as a reason I can’t ride it properly. This is not an option when you’ve watched four other women sail through the obstacles with style. It’s not really surprising I end up wrapped around a tree; that I get up for another go is.

By now the scenery is beginning to work its magic. Banked turns and a twisting single track pull us out on to sweeping open mountainside, giving us time to catch our breath before diving back into the fray, trails looping and plunging across the terrain like roller coasters. The coaches are constantly at our heels, offering advice to make us go faster, honing our style and providing support for shaky nerves.

My nerves are calming down by the time I’m on my second beer in the Crépu bar. Judging by the amount of mud on the floor, it’s a popular spot with Morzine’s mountain bikers. And there are a lot of them. While most ski resorts become ghost towns during the “off” season, Morzine is positively buzzing. Before dinner I head to the heated Olympic-sized outdoor pool and manage a length before cramp sets in. But thankfully nothing more arduous is planned for the evening than a three-course meal at the chalet, during which a fight erupts over who gets to eat the extra banoffee pie. Clearly “diet” is not a word female mountain bikers have much time for – nor is it one Sara at Dirtgirls factors into her menus.

The next day we are split into groups according to where we want to ride and – to put it bluntly – how good we are. High on my achievements the day before, I decide to follow Fionn and Jo to Chatel for some more lessons on the blue runs. A man flies over our heads across the valley attached to a zip wire confirming the dawning realisation that mountain bikers are not the only adrenalin junkies attracted here during the summer.

Halfway down we stop off at Chez Babette, a restaurant that has embraced fairy lights with enthusiasm and which, during the winter, you can ski into before being wrapped in faux fur blankets. We scramble up a scree slope and fill the doorway with helmets, pads and mud. Babette, the world’s most effervescent hostess, loves it. Refuelled, we drop down the valley, riding tiny bridges across rushing alpine rivers, the temperature falling every time we get close to them. I’m pretty sure the high five was invented for the end of a Portes du Soleil mountain bike run.

Back on the chairlift, bike swinging companiably to my right, I hear a rumble of thunder as clouds roll in. This time I know better than to think I’ll stay dry.

Man City not a threat – Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed local rivals Manchester City as a major threat to Manchester United’s Premier League title this season.

City manager Mark Hughes has this summer spent millions on building a squad to break into the top four.

But United boss Ferguson said: "It won’t be easy for them to win anything, even with the players they have bought.

"I can’t look at them as our main competitors. Liverpool and Chelsea are our main competitors."

Emmanuel Adebayor is City’s latest addition to a squad which that includes Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz and former United favourite Carlos Tevez.

606: DEBATE
Give your thoughts on Sir Alex Ferguson’s comments

Striker Adebayor signed from Arsenal for about £25m, midfielder Barry was bought from Aston Villa for £12m and City paid Blackburn about £18m for Paraguay international Santa Cruz.

Hughes is keen to bring in Chelsea captain John Terry, while an approach for Joleon Lescott has already been rejected.

But Ferguson believes the only place their rivals can challenge his side is in the battle for headlines.

Speaking from his side’s tour in Malaysia, he added: "We are being challenged for the back pages.

"Manchester City are getting all the back page stories and they will hold that position for the rest of the season because there is a lot of interest in what they have done and a lot of speculation about whether it is going to work.
"They have bought a lot of high profile players but they have 10 strikers.

"That is a hell of a lot. I have not spoken to all the managers but the one or two I have are saying ‘Who are they going to leave out’"

"How does he (Hughes) pick a team We are all interested."

Manchester City players with boss Mark Hughes

City’s spending has been second only to Real Madrid this summer – following the high-profile signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Kaka.

But Ferguson sees definite differences between the way the money is used at both clubs.

"Real Madrid are different to Manchester City," he said.

"They have an unusual culture of not really bothering about money because they can use their name to write off debt. No Spanish bank will ever close them down.

"Manchester City’s culture is about cash. It is about having money and using it."

Ferguson also believes Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger could find this coming season a struggle, having sold their star striker to City.

He said: "Arsenal have the biggest job to do because they have sold Adebayor and don’t seem to have the money the rest have got.

"How Arsene develops his team will be his biggest test.

"The one thing we know about Arsenal is that they will play some of the best football you will see and they will create chances.

"They could easily re-establish themselves and challenge for the league again."</p

Everton reject City bid for Lescott

• Man City want to pair Lescott with Terry in central defence
• David Moyes has insisted none of his players will be sold

Everton have rejected a bid from Manchester City for their England defender Joleon Lescott. The bid, believed to be around £15m, was made yesterday to the club owner Bill Kenwright.

The 26-year-old Lescott has been linked with City for several weeks, but this is the first time that the Eastlands club have tested Everton manager David Moyes’s claims that none of his squad will be sold this summer.

Lescott was a key part of Everton’s run to the FA Cup final last season. City, who have spent over £50m on Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry already this summer, want to pair Lescott with the Chelsea and England captain John Terry in their defence.

But with the Terry deal looking increasingly unlikely, Everton have now made it clear that they do not want to sell the former Wolves defender.

Adebayor passes Man City medical

Emanuel Adebayor

Manchester City are in negotiations to sign Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, BBC Sport understands.

The Togo international, 25, is believed to be on sale for about £25m after three-and-a-half seasons at Arsenal.

Adebayor, who scored 16 times for the Gunners last season, has also been linked to AC Milan and Chelsea.

City are intent on building a new-look attack and are on the verge of signing Carlos Tevez, while they have already captured Roque Santa Cruz this summer.

The Eastlands club are eager to break into the Premier League’s top four this coming season, and have shown their determination with their close-season spending.

Midfielder Gareth Barry was bought from Aston Villa, and from under the noses of last season’s Premier League runners-up Liverpool, for £12m and City paid Blackburn about £18m for Paraguay international forward Santa Cruz.

City are expected to complete a deal for Tevez on Tuesday – the Argentine will be a free transfer after his contract with Premier League champions Manchester United expired.

And if Adebayor also makes the switch to Eastlands, City will have captured players from three of the top six clubs in the top flight last season.

Additionally, there is growing speculation that Chelsea and England captain John Terry could join the Sky Blues’ revolution.

In Adebayor, City would be buying a player who has scored 62 goals in 142 appearances for Arsenal since he joined from Monaco for £7m.

He hit 30 goals in the 2007/08 season but struggled with injuries in the last campaign, and also incurred the wrath of some Arsenal fans who felt the striker lacked commitment. </p

Terry wants to join us, say Man City

• City manager confident of signing ‘Mr Chelsea’
• Terry thought to favour a change of scenery

Mark Hughes broke his silence on the John Terry affair today to speak of his confidence that the England captain wanted to join Manchester City and publicly question whether the man who has portrayed himself as Mr Chelsea needed “a change of scenery” for the good of his own career.

Hughes described Terry as an “outstanding player and an outstanding person” and made it clear that City had targeted him because they had received information that he was agitating to leave Stamford Bridge. The City manager accepted there were some players in the world, such as Steven Gerrard and Lionel Messi, who could never be persuaded to leave their clubs but argued that Terry did not fall into that category and painted a picture of the 28-year-old beginning to feel stale at the place where he has spent his entire career.

“We would like to think we could offer John a different challenge,” Hughes said. “He’s been at Chelsea a long time and I know from my own experience as a player that when you have been with a club for a long time you get to a point when you think you need a new challenge and that a change of scenery would re-ignite certain things within you.

“It is not a question of finance, or money, it is about a different challenge, and John being at a different stage in his life and his career, and maybe that is why there hasn’t been a response [to commit himself to Chelsea] because John is seriously thinking in those terms. I went through that process myself as a player and I can understand if that is the way he is thinking.”

Those remarks will inevitably go down badly at Stamford Bridge at a time when Chelsea are aggressively trying to repel City’s advances and have not wavered from their public stance that Terry is not available at any price. Hughes, however, felt sufficiently emboldened to question whether Terry recognised City were “on the cusp of something” and he was speaking from a position of strength after several months of detailed inquiries behind the scenes to ascertain the defender’s exact position.

The last message Hughes received was on Monday morning when he was reliably informed that Terry wanted, if possible, to leave Chelsea in as dignified a way as possible but that, were it necessary, he was also willing to force through a move. City’s information, as revealed by the Guardian in February, is that he has become disillusioned about Chelsea’s perceived lack of ambition in the transfer market and the frequency with which the club have changed managers. Information has also reached City that he has difficulties with several other members of the dressing room and, as Hughes indicated, that he feels like his career needs a new challenge. The huge sums of money on offer cannot be overlooked, with City willing to make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League on around £250,000 a week.

City have spent £54m on Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry this summer and Hughes’s spending will go through the £200m mark if, as expected, the club complete the £25m signing of Emmanuel Adebayor today. The fee has been agreed but Adebayor has asked for permission to sleep on it. The Togo international is worried how the move would be perceived in Africa but Hughes is confident of getting his man. “It’s well documented that we moved away from Samuel Eto’o and decided we wanted Adebayor, and it’s quite close.”

City’s next move will be to inform Chelsea they are willing to pay in excess of £30m for Terry. On two separate occasions Hughes pointedly described Terry as being a Chelsea player “at this moment in time” and the manager added: “We know there are other areas of the team we need to address now. We’ve made an offer to Chelsea and I’ve made my feelings known in terms of my respect for John Terry. I think he’s an outstanding player and an outstanding person. I’ve thought that since I first met him when he was a young boy at Chelsea and I was a player there, and if the opportunity has presented itself to bring a player of that calibre to the club we will try our hardest to do it. We’ve already had conversations with Chelsea to that regard and we would like the opportunity to speak to John Terry now.”

Tevez completes move to Man City

Carlos Tevez

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of former Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez, who will hold a 1400 BST news conference on Tuesday.

The Argentine, 25, left Old Trafford last month and will sign a five-year deal following a medical.

City depart for a three-match tour of South Africa on Wednesday.

"It’s terrific news," said boss Mark Hughes. "He’s an international of the highest class who possesses all the attributes to help drive us forward."

Hughes added: "This is yet another deal that shows the commitment of the owner to make this club the very best it can be."

Tevez, who will wear the number 32 shirt at Eastlands, spent a season with West Ham before joining Manchester United on an extended loan deal in 2007.

His move to Old Trafford ended a long-running saga following complications with West Ham’s registration of the player.

"He is not only outstanding technically but he is a reliable goal scorer"

Mark Hughes

The Premier League has ratified all the paperwork regarding his move to Eastlands having been assured City have sole registration of the striker.

Tevez, the only player to win the South American player of the year award three seasons running, won the Olympic gold medal with Argentina in Athens in 2004.

He was at Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side lifted successive Premier League titles, becoming a crowd favourite as he scored 34 goals in 99 league and cup starts.

Tevez will become one of a select band to have joined both Manchester clubs and he could re-visit his former club at the Old Trafford derby on 19 September.

"He is not only outstanding technically but he is a reliable goal scorer and someone who will contribute fully to the team ethic," Hughes added.

"He gives us another exciting, attacking dimension."

PHIL MCNULTY’S BLOG

"Is he better than what City currently have Can they afford him Yes, and most emphatically yes."

United said in June that they were willing to pay the £25.5m to turn the striker’s two-year loan move into a permanent five-year deal but Tevez decided to move on.

Speaking after Tevez’s decision to leave Manchester United, the player’s advisor Kia Joorabchian said: "He has to sign the next five years with a club he believes has got ambition to go forward in the Premier League, a club with history and one that really wants to achieve things."

Argentine international Tevez scored 15 goals last season but was often on the bench for key games and was wary of not getting enough first-team football ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Manchester City’s summer spending so far has seen them sign striker Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn for £18m and Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry for £12m.

But a proposed bid for Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o fell through – even though reports suggested the club was willing to make the Cameroon international the highest-paid player in the world, earning £250,000 per week.

There have also been rumours that Chelsea captain John Terry is on Manchester City’s wish-list, although Stamford Bridge boss Carlo Ancelotti insists the England defender is not for sale at any price.

Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor is understood to be in talks over a move to Eastlands.</p

The Devil Makes Three :: 06.17.09 :: Austin, TX

This ain’t acoustic music for noodling and hula-hooping, nor sitting on your ass and clapping politely. This is acoustic music you shimmy, shake, spill drinks, holler and get bruises to. Ah, but you’ll hear no complaints from me. Come get some! The Devil Makes Three, the Santa Cruz, California-based trio composed of guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean (McBean and Bernhard also switched up banjer duties for some songs), are inked up (Turino’s bull skull tattoo across her chest was giving me serious itching to get more work done), with instruments that are roughed up (McBean’s guitar looked like it had been attacked by sandpaper and alley cats, and Bernhard’s axe was sporting some serious duct tape), and they got a wicked drive that leaves rubber on the highway. That rhythm is undeniably tenacious, but a back porch storytelling soul winds, true blue, through all of it, and the freaky spikes in their jug swigs remind me of The Violent Femmes‘ country-fied material at times. DM3 are one of that blessed lot reclaiming “traditional American music” for the people, particularly the downtrodden, broke and down-and-out set, in the spirit of this sound’s originators.

Although they’ve been going for a few years now, I myself am relatively new to the fold. They sold me the first few notes into their set at Lovejoy’s, my favorite bar in Austin, during SXSW. Between that roughhousing performance, and their truly superb new album, Do Wrong Right (JamBase review here) – big cheers to them for also releasing it on vinyl – I was looking forward to seeing this repeat performance at Stubb’s indoors. They certainly didn’t disappoint. The three were blazing, at times literally, as the heat crept in to the intimate indoor bar room at Stubb’s BBQ regardless of the signature Austin Arctic AC blast, causing the sweaty band to ask for the ceiling fans to be turned on. For a Wednesday night, they drew a decent-sized and rambunctious crowd that displayed the sort of uncivilized behavior that one might see at a Split Lip Rayfield show (if that’s a double bill that hasn’t happened yet, it needs to).

The Devil Makes Three :: 06.17.09 :: Austin, TX

Newer material, like springy “Do Wrong Right,” kinetic “Aces and Twos” and spunky “Gracefully Facedown” were delivered perfectly with McBean’s Hank Williams-infused vocals, and they threw down mighty with cuts like “Ten Feet Tall” (“Get your head out of the clouds/ And your feet back in the dirt my friend” – amen!), the swinging shadows in ode to demon Jack, “Old Number Seven,” and the rib-tickling “Uncle Harvey’s Plane.” They also pulled out stellar, shit-kicking takes on “Statesboro Blues” (which is on Do Wrong Right) and “My Gal” (a well-loved traditional that Yonder fans should be familiar with). An assortment of drunks and ne’er-do-wells charmingly slam dance through their songs, but they’re also down with the menacing creep hanging around in the back alley, tapping his nicotine fingernails against a clammy brick wall. When Bernard snarled lines like, “That spirit rushing in my veins,” or bit into, “That bullet flies to carry me home,” I got me some chills. But with a hefty combination of sardonic humor and dancing steel-toed boots, their darkness only makes you shudder for so long. You won’t really have time to get the heebie-jeebies as you hurtle headfirst into the riotous moving mess of bodies.

Standing on the patio that leads from the inside bar to the yard after the show, nostalgically inhaling secondhand smoke, I couldn’t help but think of the last show I saw outdoors at Stubb’s. It was Old Crow Medicine Show, and sonically, there are certainly some similarities between the two bands, particularly reaching back into OCMS’s older, rougher sounding work. But DM3 is covered in scratchier rust as they shake the bottom of the ladder. And give me this freakishly enthused crowd over the no-dancing, CMT-watching, talking-through-the-show-while-waiting-on-”Wagon Wheel” types who seemed to infiltrate OCMS (I really dig that band, but I can’t help but think that’s what happens when you aren’t taper-friendly). Talking contrasts, at one point during the DM3 show, a skinny punk rock girl sailed over the crowd, so quick that, from what I saw, security never even caught on that there was crowd surfing afoot. Jumping on someone’s shoulders for support, she reached up for the low ceiling, scrambling across the rafters like monkey bars. I was concerned for a second, but as quickly as she did her Spiderman routine she came back down to earth, safely and agilely. DM3 just bring that out in people, gravity be damned.

Man City pull plug on Eto’o move

Samuel Eto'o

Manchester City have ended their interest in Barcelona’s Cameroon international striker Samuel Eto’o.

The two clubs had been in talks over the £25m-rated striker after Barca told the 28-year-old Eto’o they were prepared to let him leave the Nou Camp.

City chief executive Garry Cook said: "The circumstances surrounding him were such that a deal couldn’t be completed.

Eto’o is the second marquee player City have missed out on following Kaka’s decision not to sign in January.

City reportedly made a bid in the region of £100m for the Brazilian midfielder, but he opted to stay with AC Milan, before joining Real Madrid in a £60m transfer in June.

Reports suggested the Eastlands club told Eto’o he could earn wages of up to £250,000 per week, which would have made him the highest-paid player in the world.

606: DEBATE

"There are better £20m targets available"

——–HistoryRepeating——-

But the transfer became bogged down in a contractual dispute between Eto’o and Barcelona, who has been offered a new two-year contract by the Catalan club.

Eto’o cost Barcelona £16m when he signed from Mallorca in 2004 and the Cameroon forward has scored more than 100 goals in his five seasons with the club.

He helped the Catalan side win a treble trophy haul of the Spanish league title, domestic cup and Champions League in the 2008-2009 campaign.

City’s summer spending so far has seen them sign striker Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn for £18m and Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry for £12m. </p

City set to pull out of Eto’o bid

• Deadline set for close of play tonight
• Club more optimistic about John Terry

Manchester City’s difficulties in trying to capture the marquee signings they crave have brought them to the point of abandoning their pursuit of Samuel Eto’o. The club have set a deadline of close of business tonight to get a definitive answer from the Barcelona striker. Otherwise they plan to withdraw their £25.5m bid.

Unless there is a late change of heart on the part of the Cameroonian, Eto’o's name will be added to a lengthening list of superstars who have rejected City’s “project” despite being offered huge sums in wages. Franck Ribéry and David Villa have turned the club down this summer and in January, City aborted an attempt to sign Kaka from Milan for £93m.

Mark Hughes, City’s manager, had spoken of the need for “patience” over Eto’o but the player’s prevarication – he led City to believe he was keen before appearing to change his mind and then declining to give a clear answer – was beginning to affect City’s rebuilding plans. Eto’o wanted perhaps as much as 50% of the transfer fee as a signing-on fee, on the basis that he could leave Barcelona on a free next year. An already complex issue has been held up by his wrangling with Barcelona and City have decided they cannot devote any more time to it, even though Eto’o has also turned down a contract in Spain.

Garry Cook, City’s chief executive, said: “Samuel Eto’o is undoubtedly a fine footballer but the circumstances surrounding him were such that the deal could not be completed. We now feel the time is right to pursue other avenues and we have a clear and strategic transfer plan, which we continue to follow.”

Cook was also referring to City’s belief that they might have better luck in their attempt to sign John Terry from Chelsea. Terry took part in a training session at Cobham and though Chelsea insist they are relaxed on the issue, City are encouraged by what they hear from the middle men they have employed to sound out Terry and his advisers.

City have signed Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry but Cook is desperate to bring in another established superstar.

“People have come to realise that you don’t go from 0-100mph in no time at all, and expect everything to fit into place,” he said. “We are talking about players of the very highest calibre on the global football stage. You can’t have everybody. The market has been relatively slow. People have been talking about lots of things going on, but the only people doing much are Real Madrid and City – wonderful company to keep, I might add.

“We have always said we will keep our workings internal, and don’t openly discuss any of that information. It’s a good strategy and maintains our dignity, because at the end of the day we will be playing with the very best clubs in the world and we want to behave like one of the best clubs in the world.”

Chelsea would like the issue resolved by the time they travel to the US for a four-game tour next Thursday.
