Saturday Eye Candy: Bobby Sheehan of Blues Traveler

WE LIGHT A BIRTHDAY CANDLE FOR ONE OF JAM’S LOST SOLDIERS

Original Blues Traveler bassist Bobby Sheehan would have turned 42 today. Sadly, he passed away at just 31 years of age in 1999. JamBase and the community that’s built up around it owe a debt to Sheehan and his bandmates for their efforts in the 1990s to promote and celebrate all things “jam.” We raise a toast to you, Bobby, and the rest of Blues Traveler this weekend.

Blue Traveler performs tomorrow, Sunday, June 13, at Bonnaroo at The Other Tent from 3:00-4:00 pm.

Let’s kick it off with “But Anyway” live on The Soundboy Show.

Traveler was a staple at beloved jam mecca the Wetlands Preserve in NYC. Here they are kicking Charlie Daniels’ ditty around.

It’s easy to forget in these days of Bonnaroo, Wakarusa and myriad other fests, that jam-minded bands didn’t always have it so easy. One major push for the notion of jam rock came from the H.O.R.D.E. tours instigated by Blues Traveler.

Here’s the band in 1994 with guest Warren Haynes.

Since we’re time traveling back to the ’90s, let’s check out this clip from Dennis Miller’s late night show before the conservative demons crawled into his head. Nice vest, dude!

We wrap this small remembrance with a pretty, orchestra fueled version of one of Traveler’s more wistful numbers.

U.S. urges China to resume military contacts

The United States has appealed to China to restore military ties, despite friction about U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. Speaking to reporters at a security conference in Singapore Saturday, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said China’s decision to break off military-to-military contacts earlier this year could undercut regional stability.

Saturday Eye Candy: Procol Harum

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GARY BROOKER!

Though not often cited in the list of great ’60s British rock bands these days, Procol Harum was a major force in the late ’60s/early ’70s whose very first single, “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” was Top Ten around the world and whose live debut was opening for Jimi Hendrix at the height of his popularity. A touch more bookish and ornate than many peers, Procol Harum instantly carved out their own piece of the rock landscape and has remained a fairly active group for over 40 years. The man at the helm for most of these years is pianist-singer-songwriter Gary Brooker, who turns 65 today. One the finest, most distinctive voices to emerge from the U.K., Brooker’s intricate piano work and gift for subtle emotion in all aspects marks him as a true great.

We begin with an evocative, bittersweet “Repent Walpurgis” from 1971.

“Conquistador” shows off the jauntier side of colonial expansion!

Further shipboard living with one of the most striking songs ever written about seafaring.

“Christmas Camel” is one of several fine black holiday numbers in the Procol Harum catalogue.

Such a grand mix of ballsy swinging and literate wordplay!

“A Whiter Shade of Pale” takes us out with Brooker’s extraordinary singing, Matthew Fisher’s mesmerizing organ, and a lyric by Keith Reid that is as relevant and moving today as it was in 1967.

Saturday Eye Candy Radiohead’s Phil Selway

GIVING THE DRUMMER SOME

Though critical and fan accolades usually land on guitarists Jonny Greenwood and Ed O’Brien and the lazy-eyed genius out front, Radiohead‘s sound, especially as it’s evolved from OK Computer onward, owes just as much to drummer Phil Selway. A dead brilliant trap drummer, Selway has also explored the outer reaches of drum machine potential and carried the classlic Krautrock percussion sound into the 21st century. Tomorrow is Phil Selway’s 43rd birthday. In appreciation of his contribution to the drumming arts and modern rock in general, we offer up a smattering of prime Selway, both with Radiohead and in occasional side project 7 Worlds Collide.

We begin our natal day shout-out with Radiohead at their simmering best.

There are but a handful of drummers that could pull off the twists and turns of this one, all the while making it swing.

Selway’s a pretty fine singer-songwriter, too, as evidenced by this lovely Selway penned number, which finds him out front on guitar and vocals.

As one astute YouTube commenter put it, “That’s serious fucking drumming.” Indeed.

Selway’s drumming will often bring heft and solidity into band’s pretty, drifting numbers; a lovely juxtaposition against the ache and fragility in Thom Yorke’s voice.

Though if the Selway had wanted to be a crushing great straight rock drummer, he sure as hell had the chops and muscle right out of the gate.

Saturday Eye Candy: Exile On Main Street

JIMMY FALLON ISN’T THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SALUTE THE STONES!

A deluxe reissue of The Rolling Stones‘ landmark Exile On Main Street hits shelves next Tuesday, May 18. We’ve decided to honor the occasion with a smattering of cover versions and fine tidbits from the Stones themselves related to tracks off Exile. Enjoy!

We jump off with the Waddy Wachtel Band knocking out a gnarly version of Exile opener “Rocks Off.” Waddy ought to know a thing or two about this one since he’s the lead guitarist in Keith Richards and the X-Pensive Winos.

Speaking of Waddy, here he is rockin’ a classic with Linda Ronstadt in her tough, beautiful prime in 1977.

Here’s State Radio‘s Chad Stokes getting into the Stones’ acoustic side at the Calling All Crows benefit concert last December.

Few rock acts have more tribute bands than the Stones, and these guys nail one of their deep album cuts really well.

This slow burner proved one of Phish‘s strongest versions during their Halloween performance of Exile last year.

1972 was a great year for the Rolling Stones. No matter how much one loves Ronnie Wood, it’s hard not to miss Mick Taylor.

Even if he stopped playing with the Stones, Taylor didn’t stop playing some of their favorite numbers like this Robert Johnson tune that made it on to Exile.

We wrap this week with an early version of “Shine A Light” recorded during the Let It Bleed sessions accompanied by some vintage footage of Mick, Keith and the others.

Saturday Eye Candy: The Yardbirds

PERHAPS THE MOST UNDERRATED BRITISH INVASION BAND OF THEM ALL!

While the guitarists in the 1960s incarnations of The Yardbirds get the lion’s share of historical recognition – easy to understand when one band helps launch the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page – but today we salute co-founder and original bassist Paul Samwell-Smith, who turns 67 today. A noteworthy music producer since he left the band in 1966, Samwell-Smith helped forge one of the most original, influential group sounds to emerge from the 1960s and played a key role in re-popularizing the blues with young people around the globe.

Though often a quite hard-edged group, The Yardbirds had a way with pop hooks, particularly this continuing radio staple.

Clapton was always pretty damn good, eh?

The Yardbirds were at the epicenter of pop culture in the ’60s, which score them strange spotlights like this scene from Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up where they play “Stroll On.”

In many ways, this band made the blues hip to folks who might have never encountered libidinous gems like “I’m A Man” without them.

A taste of Page in his first full flowering.

And we end with an indestructible bit of rock rightness. It is to be hoped that guitarists will continue to mine this one forever more.
