When Apple announced the iPhone, few could have imagined how successful it would become. At the time of its original launch, the device featured no native apps, lacked copy and paste, and generally failed to deliver all the things consumers wanted. As Apple added those must-have features, the device became more popular. But not even the most optimistic observer could have predicted how important gaming would become for Apple.
The iPhone is now the other handheld gaming device. It competes with Sony’s PSP and the Nintendo DS. Although it originally started as a platform for simple, casual games, major developers have gotten behind it, causing it to become a prominent offering in the market. At this point, the iPhone has just as many viable games for casual and hardcore gamers as any other platform on the market.
But that doesn’t mean that Apple’s work is done. If it intends on becoming a game hardware maker and it should the company needs to do some things to increase its gaming cred and make the hardcore part of the market put it on the same level as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.

The Disco Biscuits have teamed up with HeadCount to stage Bisco Power Mission – a benefit concert and volunteer initiative to help outfit a Philadelphia public school with solar power. The concert will be at held at Brooklyn Bowl, the nation’s largest LEED Certified green music venue, in Brooklyn, NY on Sunday, March 21.
When The Disco Biscuits played Brooklyn Bowl on October 11 last year, tickets sold out in less than a minute. Tickets for Bisco Power Mission go on sale Thursday, February 25 at 12 p.m. EST through BiscoTix and Friday, February 26 at 12 p.m. EST through Ticketfly. General Admission tickets are $40 and a limited number of VIP/Bowling tickets are available for $75. Free bowling all night. Lanes are assigned on a first come, first serve basis. To the astonishment of an entire tribe, Moonalice‘s new single “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” has been downloaded more than 100,000 times since its introduction on November 13, 2009. Three-fourths of the downloads have been in the lossless FLAC format. Recorded, mixed, and mastered for a mere $5,000, “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” is available only on the web and only for free. The FLAC version can be found at moonalice.bit.ly/2uZpcY.
Moonalice is a San Francisco band featuring John Molo on drums, Barry Sless on lead guitar, Pete Sears on bass and keyboards, Ann McNamee on bass and keyboards, and Chubby Wombat Moonalice on bass and guitar.
To celebrate the success of the single, Moonalice will launch the “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” tour in Seattle on February 17. Some shows on that tour will be priced at $4.20, including the giant Moonalice Tribal Pow Wow at Slim’s in San Francisco on April 20.
Moonalice invented the Twittercast concert, where it shares links to songs for an entire show, either live or after the fact. Moonalice has done 67 Twittercasts (and Facecasts, as the Facebook equivalent is known) and also broadcasts a song an hour over Twitter via Moonalice radio.

JamBase just got word of a Tweet from the band’s management which said: “Animal Collective confirmed to get first officially licensed Grateful Dead sample!
