Microsoft and Yahoo deal rumoured

After almost 18 months of increasingly bitter negotiations, Microsoft is said to be closing in on a deal to buy technology rival Yahoo’s web search business.

Several reports emerged late on Thursday suggesting that late-stage talks were under way between the two companies, opening up the distinct possibility that Microsoft could finally take control of Yahoo’s search engine division.

An analyst with institutional investor ThinkEquity was quoted by investment website 24/7 Wall Street as saying a deal was “imminent”, while sources told influential Silicon Valley blog All Things Digital that an agreement was close to being completed.

It is not clear what the precise terms of the deal on offer are, but according to 24/7 Wall Street, it could see Microsoft shell out around $3bn (£1.8bn) to take over Yahoo’s search advertising operation. The deal, it suggests, would also see Microsoft agree to share revenue from the search business with Yahoo for several years.

Such a pact would bring to an end the tortured negotiations between the two companies, but it would be an incredible climbdown for Yahoo – which turned down the possibility of far more money when Microsoft launched an unsolicited $45bn bid to buy Yahoo in its entirety last February.

That offer was largely seen as an attempt by Microsoft to gain control of its rival’s search business, since the Seattle software giant has been desperate to increase its share of the lucrative search advertising market for several years. But Yahoo rejected it, saying that it believed it was worth far more money.

In the interim, relations between the two companies have been cool – and both sides have rejected rumours of reported negotiations.

However, with the two companies’ chief rival, Google, appearing not only increasingly powerful but also apparently immune to the worst effects of the recession, things could be changing once again. Microsoft’s attempt to claw back market share with its relaunched search engine – now called Bing – has failed to make immediate inroads, leaving the Windows giant still looking for a way to make its mark in the industry.

Taking control of Yahoo’s search business would give Microsoft almost 30% of the American market, more than trebling its sphere of influence.

According to figures from ComScore, Google controls around 65% of the search market in the US, with Yahoo 19.5% and Microsoft trailing in third with a little over 8%. Internationally, Google is even stronger.

Such a deal would be a further hammer blow to the reputation of Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, who led the charge against Microsoft and sparked a war of words with rival CEO Steve Ballmer.

Since the negotiations between the two collapsed late last year, however, Yahoo has brought in a new CEO, Carol Bartz – who may take a more pragmatic view of the situation given Yahoo’s financial struggles.

The company is due to release its latest quarterly results next week, and may be hoping that any agreement with Microsoft could take the edge off a disappointing fiscal period.

Toubab Krewe Release “Fire”: Tour with Earl Smith

Toubab Krewe launches the second wave of summer tour with release of “Fire”
A new single featuring Jamaican legends Lukani, Earl Smith and Leroy Wallace

Toubab Krewe

Fresh from widely praised performances at Rothbury (read our review here), where members of the band joined The Dead on percussion during their headlining July 4th set, Toubab Krewe launches into the second leg of their summer tour with the release of a new single, “Fire.” The collaborative new song was recorded recently at reggae guitar legend Earl Smith‘s front porch home-studio in Kingston, Jamaica and features Lukani (vocals), Smith (guitar) and Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace (drums).

Toubab Krewe kicks off the tour aboard the first annual Toubab Kruise in New York City on July 15. The band will bring its dance-party inducing fusion of rock ‘n’ roll and West African music to the boat as it sails along the East River, heading through the New York Harbor to the Statue of Liberty.

Special guest Earl Smith will join Toubab Krewe on guitar at all of the upcoming shows through August 1. Perhaps the most sought after guitarist in reggae, Smith has performed and recorded with everyone from Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh and Burning Spear to more recent pop icons like Lauren Hill, Erykah Badu and Joss Stone.

Toubab Krewe plans to spend much of August in the studio recording a new full length album (details TBA).

An extensive fall tour is also in the works, with confirmed dates including the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco (October 8) and the Joshua Tree Music Festival (October 10).

A short video taken of the band’s time in Jamaica during the recording can be seen here:

Obama’s First Pitch: Slow And Low

ST. LOUIS (AP) — President Barack Obama was true to his word: He didn’t bounce it.

Miniature ‘mobile phones’ used to track pieces of rubbish

By Jonathan Fildes
Science and technology reporter, BBC News

The ebb and flow of thousands of pieces of household rubbish are to be tracked using sophisticated mobile tags.

It is hoped that making people confront the final journey of their waste will make them reduce what they throw away.

Initially, 3,000 pieces of rubbish, donated by volunteers, will be tagged in New York, Seattle and London.

"Trash is almost an invisible system today," Assaf Biderman, one of the project leaders at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told BBC News.

"You throw something into the garbage and a lot of us forget about it. It gets buried, it gets burned, it gets shipped overseas."

The Trash Track aims to make that process – termed the "removal chain" – more transparent.

Friends of the Earth’s Senior Waste Campaigner Michael Warhurst said the project could be a "useful tool" for highlighting the impact of rubbish.

"[Waste] doesn’t simply disappear when we throw it away, and all too often it ends up causing damage when it could be recycled instead.

"People must have much better information on – and control over – where their rubbish and recycling ends up."

Global waste

In order to monitor how the pieces of rubbish move around the cities and beyond, the MIT team has developed a small mobile sensor that can be attached to individual pieces of waste.

"It’s like a miniature cell phone with limited functionality," said Carlo Ratti, another member of the project.

Each tag – encased in a protective resin – continuously broadcasts its location to a central server. The results can then be collected and plotted on a map in real time.

Prototype tags

"It’s like putting tracers in your blood and seeing where it moves around your body," said Mr Biderman.

Because cell phone technology is cheap and – importantly – ubiquitous, the system should be able to track rubbish around the globe.

This could be important when tracking computers and electronic waste, which is often disposed of incorrectly, according to Mr Ratti.

"Some of them are shipped to Africa to pollute," he said.

The team aims to tag different types of waste from computers and cell phones to bags of garden waste.

The group is currently looking for volunteers to donate their trash.

The results of the US studies will be shown at two exhibitions in Seattle and New York during September.

‘Zero waste’

The team stresses that it has tried to limit the impact of its study and of the technology, and limit the amount of extra waste it contributes to the "removal chain".

"We are adhering to the highest standards in terms of environmental impact," said Mr Biderman.

"The impact this could have on waste management and removal… could be significant, so these kinds of experiments could be much more useful than harmful for the environment."

The MIT team has previously revealed the movements of people around cities, such as Rome and Copenhagen, by analysing mobile phone signals.

They used a similar method to show how crowds moved around Washington during the inauguration of US President Barack Obama.

The tags used to track the rubbish are a departure from these more passive studies of city movements.

Ultimately, the team hopes that the technology can be miniaturised and made cheap enough that the tags could one day be attached to everything.

"Think about a future where thanks to smart tags we will not have waste anymore," said Mr Ratti. "Everything will be traceable."</p

Like on the 7-inch, Josephine is also an experiment in Molina’s songcraft, introducing some real lessons in brevity as he whittles a handful of tracks into well-under three minutes, all while taking cues from great songsmiths like Willie Nelson and Warren Zevon.

Next week, Magnolia Electric Co. will set off on a North American tour with San Diego’s The Donkeys, a tour that includes a two-night stand in Molina’s beloved Chicago.

Innovation@Intel: Identifying Insecure Applications to Keep Private Data Private

Users expect networked applications (such as on-line shopping sites) to treat their private data responsibly and to protect it, but the truth is that many applications actually have leaks that allow private data to escape. To address this concern, and give end-users some control, researchers at Intel Research Seattle are developing a tool, “Privacy Scope,” which runs along with a browser, detecting leaky systems and warning the user before they actually submit their private information. For more information see Intel Seattle Research Trustworthy Wireless research project and Trustworthy Wireless blog.

On June 3 in New York City, Afrobeat pioneer Femi Kuti, backed by his
band the Positive Force, will begin a 24-date summer tour spanning North
America, including several shows opening for the Dave Matthews Band, a
headline appearance at the Hollywood Bowl and performances at the Bonnaroo,

feature material from his first studio album of new material in seven years,
the acclaimed Day By Day.

Femi is ready to bring his new material from Day By Day to the many cities
comprising the summer tour. It’s easy to hear that the long respite has
inspired him. He is upbeat, enthusiastic and raring to hit the road again,
in spite of how much has changed since he began his hiatus. “Everybody is
back in training now,” he says. “We have to re-establish my music. We have
to come out and play it live, because the record industry is in such a bad
shape, we are all suffering.”

“Luckily,” he laughs, “the African man is used to suffering.”

The Juan MacLean & Field Tour

The Juan MacLean and The Field co-headlining a full LIVE band U.S. Tour

Welcome back intelligent dance music, we’ve missed you. – Music OMH, February 2009

The Juan MacLean

After releasing the much anticipated The Future Will Come (due 4/21 on DFA Records), Juan MacLean and Nancy Whang take The Juan MacLean on the road this spring. Juan, Nancy and band will be playing tracks live from The Future Will Come, which Filter magazine described as “perfectly orchestrated and directed to achieve maximum mood and dance-ability.” If the weather doesn’t make you sweat, your dance moves will.

The Juan MacLean is co-headlining the tour with Stockholm’s Axel Willner, aka The Field (Kompakt). After breaking out of the “boy and his laptop” mold following a tour with !!!, Willner teamed up with friends – percussionist/bass player Dan Enqvist and multi-instrumentalist Andreas Söderstrom to see what they could accomplish playing together. Modernizing their kraut rock influences, The Field recorded Yesterday & Today, due out May 19 on Anti- Records.

Co-sponsored by Scion and Nooka Toys, this is one dance party you do not want to miss.
Speaking of Nooka Toys, The Juan MacLean will have their very own Nooka Nooka Toy designed by Mike Vadino, who also designed the album cover for The Future Will Come.
