Google Wave Pushes AppJet to Sell Out to Google

Google purchased real-time document collaboration startup AppJet to fortify the Google Wave real-time collaboration platform Dec. 4. The move was a sell out from a company that felt it couldn’t compete with the sheer scope of Wave and Google, Y Combinator partner Paul Graham said. Now EtherPad is no longer accepting new customers and anyone who have registered an e-mail address with EtherPad will be e-mailed an invitation to join the Google Wave preview by December 31, 2009. EtherPad users are angry and Graham’s explanation of why AppJet quit is unlikely to appease them.

Food markets: How to store and sell more stuff

Poor places need more than seeds, fertiliser or even food science

IF FOOD aid is epitomised by a single image, it is that of neat bags of grain, stamped with the Stars and Stripes and labelled a “gift from the American people”, being unloaded in some benighted place. In a long-established practice, USAID buys food from American producers and then gives it to charities who sell the produce on the markets of indigent countries, and in turn use the proceeds to finance their anti-poverty work.

This method has its detractors, who say that sales of American food depress local markets; in theory at least, all sales should be calibrated to avoid that effect. But in a switch which might help to parry those critics, USAID is now putting more emphasis on helping farmers in recipient countries to harvest, store and above all sell their own food. Many of the changes now being encouraged have no relation to food production as such; they have to do with the ways markets are organised, credit is disbursed and laws are enforced. …

eBay Will Sell Majority Stake in Skype to Private Investors

eBay plans to sell 65 percent of its stake in Skype, the popular Internet-based calling service, to a group of private investors that include Marc Andreessen’s venture-capital firm. eBay reaches deal to sell Skype

eBay sign

Online auction site eBay is poised to say it has agreed to sell internet phone company Skype, reports say.

Skype is expected to be sold to a group of private investors, including Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen and private equity firms.

EBay has been trying to sell Skype for some time, and has said that Skype had "limited synergies" with it.

When eBay bought Skype for $2.6bn (£1.6bn) in October 2005, many analysts thought the price was too high.

For sale

The New York Times said that a price has not been named, but that eBay had been seeking about $2bn for Skype.

Earlier this year, eBay had said that it planned to spin off Skype and list its shares in the first half of 2010, an announcement many took as a signal that the firm was for sale.

Skype’s software lets computer and mobile phone users talk to each other for free and make cut-price calls to mobiles and landlines.

Unlike traditional mobile calls, which are transmitted over a cellular network, Skype turns your voice into data and sends it over the internet.

Since being acquired, the number of registered Skype users has risen to 405 million from 53 million, though free user-to-user calls still dominate the service.

The tough sell of soft power

FOREIGNERS visiting Moldova have plenty of people to talk to. Poverty and geopolitical woes mean that the country attracts an above-average bunch of outsiders. But local voices are even more impressive. One of them is Natalia Morar (pictured), a feisty 25-year-old investigative journalist. Finding Ms Morar at home in Moldova used to be rather difficult—she worked as an investigative reporter for New Times, an independent magazine based in Moscow. But in late 2007 she published an article called “The black cash of the Kremlin” about the way in which rake-offs from business were used to finance Russian politics. For that she was expelled from Russia (and even marrying a Russian colleague has been not enough to get her back into that country).

Now Ms Morar is in trouble in Moldova too. She was charged with sedition after the protests in April against election-rigging. Since then she has been unable to leave the country. That makes it easy to meet Ms Morar to discuss both authoritarian crony capitalism in Russia and its more diluted but still unpleasant local equivalent. …
