Singapore Sept bank lending growth fastest since 2008: Update

Total bank lending in Singapore rose 2.08% to a record $309.41 billion in September from $303.12 billion in August, central bank data showed on Friday.
 
It was the fastest monthly percentage increase in bank lending since May 2008.
 
Housing loans to consumers rose 1.7% to $106.87 billion from $105.08 billion in August.

Singapore Sept exports +22.7% on-year; above expected

Singapore September non-oil domestic exports growth slows to 22.7% on year, vs August’s downwardly-revised +30.8%, signaling export-dependant island nation’s economy likely starting to be hurt by slowdown among U.S., E.U. buyers, says Dow Jones.

SIA off 0.4%; limited reaction to Sept ops data

Singapore Airlines (C6L.SG) off 0.4% at $16.14, coming off brief spell in positive territory; limited market reaction to September operating data, released Friday, which show passenger load factor down 0.6 percentage point on-year, with passengers carried down 1.1%, capacity by available seat kilometres +1.3% on year, says Dow jones.

Sequentially, numbers show slight recovery from August when passenger load factor was 78.1%, passengers carried fell 6.6%. September overall load factor at 69.9% vs 70.3% year ago, 68.1% in August.

Research in motion, officially announced that the will be releasing a new tablet PC to the market.

The new tablet is called playbook, which leaves many still curious as what market they’ll be targeting – playbook making it seem as if they’ll go after the general consumer as opposed to business users. The Playbook is set to be released in early 2011; AOL is purchasing Techcrunch, but no-one seems to know for how much. A key term of the deal is that Techcrunch Founder Michael Arrington will be able to maintain his Websites’ editorial independence without interference from AOL CEO Tim Armstrong or his executives. We’ll discuss all the details; According to a new survey video chatting is gaining popularity; Companies can also make use of this technology, helping to cut down travel costs and phone bills. Most recently, Avaya, a major seller of corporate phone systems, joined teams with Skype. Starting in October, Avaya will be bundling the Skype voice chat systems into their phones, at no extra charge to their customers. The New York Times is reporting that Facebook and Skype will soon be forming a partnership as well.

Singapore Airlines
(SIA SP): Air-traffic growth slowed for a second month in August, suggesting that a recovery in demand for flights may have peaked, the International Air Transport Association said yesterday. The gain in passenger traffic eased to 6.4% compared with a year earlier, down from 9.5% in July and a high of 11.9% in June. Singapore Air, the world’s second-biggest carrier by market value, slipped 1.2% to $16.28.

HP Closes $2.35 Billion Acquisition of 3PAR

During the bidding war, 3PAR’s stock shot up from $9.65 on Aug. 16 to more than $32 per share in early September. – Hewlett-Packard reported Sept. 27 that it has closed the $2.35
billion acquisition deal announced Sept. 2 on Labor Day weekend for
utility storage vendor 3PAR.

HP and Dell had competed in a furious 10-day bidding war that started Sept. 23,
when HP tendered an unsolicited bid of $1.6 billion …

Singapore shares may open higher on Monday after Wall Street notched its fourth week of gains, as a rise in August business spending was seen as the latest sign the recovery is on firmer ground. Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index <.FTSTI> was up 0.31% on Friday to 3,092.68 points.

Here are some stocks and factors to watch:

Commodities firm Olam International (OLAM.SI) may be in focus after it said that it has raised its stake in dairy farmer NZ Farming Systems Uruguay to 78% for NZ$101.8 million ($98.8 million), bringing its total investment to NZ$120.3 million. Olam shares rose as much as 9.2% on Friday on news that it is in merger talks with larger rival Louis Dreyfus.

Weekend Comment Sept 24: China shipbuilders turn around

STOCKS OF CHINA shipbuilders Cosco Corp Singapore and JES International Holdings and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding have so far outperformed the STI. Year to date, Cosco is up 57% to close at $1.86 today, JES has more than doubled in price to 36.5 cents, and Yangzijiang is up by 46% to $1.76. During the week, Cosco and JES too were among the top volume movers. Is the worst over for China’s shipbuilders?

Cosco Corp. Singapore (COS SP), a China-based shipbuilder that also operates bulk carriers, rose 4.5% to $1.85. Mercator Lines Singapore (MRLN SP), an Indian bulk carrier, gained 1.8% to 29 cents. STX Pan Ocean Co. (STX SP), South Korea’s biggest bulk carrier, slid 0.9% to $13.16.

Singapore shares may open lower on Thursday, as technology stocks on Wall Street led declines in US indices overnight and investors remain cautious after the Federal Reserve’s statement. Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index <.FTSTI> was flat, closing 0.02% higher at 3,096.10 on Wednesday to 3,096.10 points. Here are some stocks and factors to watch:

Developers: Singapore’s home prices are set to fall “a little” after the government last month introduced fresh measures to cool the real-estate market, the local press quoted Liew Mun Leong, chief executive officer of CapitaLand, as saying. Allgreen Properties (AG SP), controlled by Malaysian billionaire Robert Kuok, increased 1.8% to $1.16. CapitaLand (CAPL SP), Southeast Asia’s biggest developer, climbed 1.5% to $4.04. City Developments (CIT SP), Singapore’s second-largest homebuilder, rose 0.3% to $12.
