3 dead in car crash in central Serbia

A woman and two men in their early twenties died after midnight this morning in a traffic accident near ÄŒačak in central Serbia, said reports. The victims’ Renault Cleo passenger car first hit a tree and then plunged into the Velika Morava River.

Serbia lowers customs for EU goods

The average rate of customs duty for goods imported from the EU has been reduced to 2.53 percent from 8.78 percent. This came as a result of the interim trade agreement Serbia had signed with the EU.

“2011 not necessarily harder than 2010”

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Resident Representative in Serbia Bogdan Lissovolik says that 2011 will be a hard year, but not necessarily harder than 2010.

He told B92 that a lot would depend on the moves of the Serbian government, the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), business activity and the effort of the citizens to provide a better future for themselves.

“U.S. supports Serbia’s EU integration”

Serbia’s Ambassador to U.S. Vladimir Petrović has stated that the U.S. supports Serbia’s EU integration process.

He added that this had already been stated by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit to Belgrade.

7th revision of IMF arrangement in February

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Resident Representative in Serbia Bogdan Lissovolik said that talks on Serbia’s stand-by arrangement would begin in February.

“We will discuss the macroeconomic elements of the program, including fiscal objectives. After the program expires, around the middle of April, we expect to continue cooperation with Serbia in the form of post-program monitoring, or continue the arrangement if Serbian authorities want to do so,” Lissovolik told daily Politika.

Serbia’s external trade USD 24bn

Serbia’s total external trade from January to November added up to USD 23.97bn, Statistical Office of Serbia Director Dragan Vukmirović stated on Wednesday.

He pointed out that the export – import ratio equaled 58.4 percent and was higher compared to the same period last year, when it was 52.1 percent.

“Diaspora should invest more in Serbia”

Foreign remittances total between EUR 3 and 5bn annually, equaling some of the biggest investments in the country, says PKS President Miloš Bugarin.
He said that these funds should not end up as part of public spending but should rather be directed to production, development of new projects and opening of new jobs.

Serbia to pay less in Satellite Affair

Serbia will pay less than EUR 30mn, instead of almost EUR 40mn, to Israeli ImageSat company for the lease of one of its satellites, B92 has learned.

Fire put out at central Serbia arms plant

There were several explosions during the night at the arms-manufacturing section of the Sloboda factory in Čačak, but the fire at the grounds has been put out. MUP Emergency Situations Sector chief Predrag Marić confirmed that the last strong blast was heard at around 05:30 CET.

Serbia’s nuclear plant plans “unrealistic”

Environment Minister Oliver Dulić says that Serbia’s participation in the construction of the Belene nuclear power plant is “unrealistic at this moment”. Dulić also said that there had been “more debate in the media than in the government” about this issue.

“Serbia confiscated EUR 250mn of ill-gotten gains”

The implementation of the Law on the Seizure of Property Stemming from Criminal Acts has enabled the authorities to confiscate EUR 250mn.

Justice Ministry State Secretary Slobodan Homen said that the law was fully implemented during 2010 and pointed out that this was the key regulation when it came to combat against organized crime, and expressed expectation that at least another EUR 100mn of ill-gotten wealth would be confiscated in 2011.

“Serbia capable of conducting investigation”

Serbia’s War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukčević has stated that the Serbian judiciary is capable of conducting the human organ trade investigation.

“The investigation can be conducted either by the Serbian judiciary, EULEX or the Albanian [judiciary], or all three of them together,” he said.

“Relations between Serbia, Vatican excellent”

Vatican Ambassador in Belgrade Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Orlando Antonini, has stated that relations between the Holy See and Serbia are excellent.

He explained that this was mainly due to the fact that the Holy See, like many other factors in the international community, had not recognized the self-proclaimed independence of Kosovo.

SNS: Serbia should indict Thaci

The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) has urged the Serbian judiciary to initiate proceedings against Kosovo PM Hashim Thaci, suspected of organ trade in Kosovo.

This should be done despite the fact that Thaci is not within reach of Serbian authorities, the SNS said.

Serbia’s cooperation with IMF successful

Serbia’s cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) has been very successful this year.

“The IMF Board allowed this week Serbia to take out EUR 373mn for the strengthening of the country’s foreign exchange reserves, since it has made a positive assessment regarding the sixth revision of the stand-by credit arrangement with Serbia,” Serbian Representative with the WB Biljana Chroneos-Krasavac said.

Croatia responds to Serbia’s counter-suit

Croatia has filed a written response to Serbia’s counter-suit to Croatia’s lawsuit for alleged aggression and genocide to the International Court of Justice.

“Croatia’s brief was presented to ICJ in complete media silence on December 20, the last day of the deadline set by the court,” Director of the Veritas Documentation Center Savo Å trbac said.

Carlsberg Serbia financial director in tax evasion

The Tax Administration has filed criminal charges against the financial director of the Carslberg Serbia brewery. The company’s senior manager has been identified with his initials P.K., and is believed to have evaded paying taxes.

PM presents Serbia 2020 Strategy

Serbian PM Mirko Cvetković and his deputy Božidar Đelić presented the draft Serbia 2020 Strategy today.

The concept envisages an increase in employment, GDP, export and investments, and is intended to be the basis of a long-term strategy of the country’s development.
