Serbia’s majority Orthodox population and the Serbian Orthodox Church are today marking the Julian calendar Christmas. The celebrations began in churches throughout the country with holy midnight liturgies last night.

“KFOR troop cut dangerous for holy sites”
A Serbian Orthodox Church dignitary says the reduction in the number of KFOR soldiers in Kosovo is “worrying and represents a very dangerous process”. “The cut in the number of KFOR soldiers, given the permanent political and security instability in Kosovo-Metohija, is a very dangerous process,” Archimandrite Sava Janjić stated at the SPC DeÄani Monastery, adding that the KFOR reduction can cause a security vacuum in the province.
Mostar again seat of SPC eparchy
Mostar has once again, after 18 years, been declared the seat of the Eparchy of Zahumlje and Herzegovina of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC).
Bishop Grigorije will be seated in this town in the western part of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Montenegrin PM on Serbian Church property
New Montenegrin Prime Minister Igor Lukšić has said that he would initiate a dialogue regarding assets of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) in Montenegro.
He said that, although he himself was not a believer, in his capacity as the prime minister, he would “help make some radical forms of highlighting the marginalized problem”.
Patriarch wishes peace and harmony
Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch Irinej wished the Serbian citizens peace, unity and love and fewer worries in the New Year.
“I wish what we all need, which is peace, harmony and unity of our homeland, with a hope that it will reach a safe port,†Irinej said in his New Year message.
“Communist crimes not equal to Holocaust”
Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Bishop Irinej says he is against any equating of the German Nazi crimes with those committed by communists in former Yugoslavia. “Without justifying any execution without a trial, we cannot put an equation sign between that kind of terror and the Holocaust,” the SPC dignitary told the Holocaust Seminar at the Assembly of Vojvodina in Novi Sad.
SPC against K. Serbs voting
The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Holly Assembly of Bishops has stated that conditions for the Serbs to participate in the Kosovo elections have not been met.
“It is obvious that there are no normal conditions for participation in the mentioned elections,†reads the SPC announcement, ahead of the voting in the province, organized by the Kosovo Albanan authorities.
Bishop denies accusations he’s schismatic
The defrocked Bishop Artemije said in an interview for VeÄernje Novosti that the Diocese of RaÅ¡ka- Prizren is “still his”. He also revealed that he was not invited to the recently held Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC).
SPC Synod defrocks rebel bishop
The Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) decided Friday to defrock retired Bishop Artemije. Earlier in the day, the bishop, who was forced into retirement earlier this year because of a financial scandal involving his associates, was declared by the Synod to be in open schism with the Church.
KFOR commander congratulates bishop
KFOR Commander Erhard Buehler congratulated Thursday Serbian Orthodox Church Bishop Teodosije on his election as the new head of the Diocese of RaÅ¡ka-Prizren. Buehler has gotten to know Bishop Teodosije as a “committed spiritual leader and an extraordinary person, who embodies tolerance, reconciliation and harmony,” KFOR said in a statement, which also notes that the KFOR commander has known the bishop for some time.
Retired bishop to establish “new church”?
Retired Bishop Artemije has informed the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) that he will establish a “new church†if he is not allowed to run Raška-Prizren Eparchy.
The SPC is still in turmoil over the case of Bishop Artemije.
Bishop: Serbian Church could split
A schism in the Serbian Orthodox Church is “not impossible”, says one of its bishops based in Bosnia. Zahumlje-Hercegovina Bishop Grigorije told Belgrade’s Politika daily that he previously warned about this in a letter to the top SPC ranks, sent two years ago.

The Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) and the Catholic Church in Serbia backed efforts in Italy to reinstate the crucifix in schools. The dignitaries of the two churches said they “defend the right to displaying religious symbols in the states that have majority of Christian citizens and at the same time honor minorities’ freedom of religion”.
Patriarch, defense minister mark holiday
Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Patriarch Irinej and Defense Minister Dragan Šutanovac attended Vidovdan (St. Vitus Day) ceremonies in Niš on Monday.
Irinej was quoted as saying that the Serbian people can defend Kosovo through unity and readiness to save this holy Serbian territory in the best way possible.
