Govt. wants new loan from banks

The Serbian government has proposed a new bill to parliament, in a bid to borrow more money from commercial banks. A new loan would amount to USD 400mn.

PM: Serbia EU candidate by end of 2011

Serbian PM Mirko Cvetković says he is convinced the country will become a candidate for EU membership by the end of this year. Cvetković, who is currently visiting Brussels, told B92 late on Monday that it was necessary to “make great effort and reach political agreement in Serbia”.

Serbia, Spain sign police agreement

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić and his Spanish counterpart Perez Rubalcaba signed in Madrid an agreement on police cooperation in order to combat crime. The Serbian Interior Ministry said on Tuesday that Dačić stated “the fight against organized crime is one of the most important fields of cooperation between two countries”.

Serbian delegation continues Brussels visit

The Serbian delegation visiting Brussels, headed by Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković, will confer with EU Commissioner for Justice Viviane Reding. On Monday, Cvetković presented the answers to the EC questionnaire to the EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule.

Serbians return from Egypt

A plane with 120 Serbian tourists from Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada landed on Monday evening at Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport.
As Serbian Ambassador to Cairo Dejan Vasiljević said earlier, after the departure of that group from the two resorts, no Serbian tourists remain in Egypt.

Serbian currency weakens against euro

The Serbian dinar (RSD) weakened against the euro on Monday by 39 paras. This set the official middle exchange rate at RSD 104.6051 for one euro, announced the National Bank of Serbia (NBS).

PM: Teachers’ requests unrealistic

Serbian PM Mirko Cvetković says teachers’ demands are unrealistic and that the government will not make concessions that would undermine economic stability.

He said that the demands of the teachers on strike for an increase of their earnings by 24 percent were unrealistic and could cause a chain reaction of demands for salary and pension increases that would lead to inflation and weaken the domestic currency.

Serbians, Macedonians to cross border with ID cards

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dačić is visiting Macedonia on January 28 and 29.

“Macedonian and Serbian citizens will soon be able to travel across the border with identity cards only, without passports,” he said Friday.

Serbia, Croatia in joint science projects

The joint Serbian and Croatian commission for scientific and technological cooperation met on Friday in Zagreb and prepared a list of 32 science projects.

Serbian Assistant Science and Technological Development Minister Viktor Nedović told Tanjug that 73 applications had been received and 32 were selected, mainly in the field of biotechnology.

Health minister resigns for “personal reasons”

Serbian Health Minister Tomica Milosavljević has resigned, saying the decision came “for deeply personal reasons”.

Reporters who attended his news conference in Belgrade today were not allowed to ask any questions.

Serbian FM urges African Union support

Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić thanked on Thursday African countries for their support to Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also urged them to support an investigation into the allegations presented in the report on human organ trafficking in Kosovo.

Tadić calls for investigation, EULEX wants evidence

Serbian President Boris Tadić has called for an urgent investigation into organ trade while EULEX is waiting for CoE Rapporteur Dick Marty to produce evidence.

Addressing the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the Serbian president pointed out that there was no institution that could conduct the investigation at the moment but that one could be immediately created.

Serbian currency strongest this year

The Serbian dinar (RSD) gained 42 paras in value against the euro on Thursday, setting the official middle exchange rate at RSD 104.1572. This is the highest value for the Serbian currency so far this year.

President: Serbia ready for dialogue

Serbian President Boris Tadić has stated that Serbia is prepared for the dialogue with Priština.
He also pointed out that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton had already been informed about it.

BBC shuts down Serbian, Albanian services

The BBC is due to outline its plans to close five of its 32 World Service language services.
Staff are due to be informed of the redundancy details on Wednesday, and it is thought that about 650 jobs will be lost from a workforce of some 2,400.

President sends condolences after terrorist attack

Serbian President Boris Tadić sent on Tuesday a telegram of condolence to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in the wake of Monday’s terrorist attack in Moscow. “The citizens of Serbia and I are deeply distressed by the loss of such a large number of lives. Please receive our deepest sympathy with the families of the victims and the people of Russia at this difficult moment,” reads the message released by Tadić’s press service.

Serbian Church “destroying Montenegro”

The Montenegrin parliament speaker has accused the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) of “destroying the state of Montenegro”. The SPC is making this endeavor by means of putting up a tin church on top of Mt. Rumija, near the town of Bar, according to Rajko Krivokapić.

35 dead in Moscow attack; Serbian injured

35 people died today at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport in a suicide bomber attack, Russian officials have confirmed. More than 130 people have been injured, among them a Serbian citizen.
