Church dignitary blasts “made-up language”

The top Serbian Orthodox Church bishop in Montenegro says that the Montenegrin language was “made up”, and condemned those who said they spoke it. Metropolitan Amfilohije made the statements in Podgorica last night, during the ceremonies to mark the Julian calendar New Year.

Julian calendar New Year marked

Several thousand Belgraders gathered in the Serbian capital last night to welcome in the so-called Serb New Year. The Julian calendar New Year is also celebrated by the Serbian Orthodox Church, and the churches of Russia, the Jerusalem Patriarchate, and others.

Govt. adopts anti-crisis program

The Serbian government adopted on Thursday a program of measures to mitigate the adverse effects of the global economic crisis. The measures were put forward by the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development.

SNS submits petition for change of Constitution

Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader Tomislav Nikolić submitted 304,580 signatures for the change of the Constitution to the Serbian parliament today.

The SNS thinks that the number of MPs should be reduced from 250 to 125, that the number of ministers should be between 12 and 15 and that positions of state secretaries should be repealed.

Serbian currency continues to recover

The Serbian dinar (RSD) has continued to strengthen against the euro for the fourth consecutive day. On Thursday its value increased by 40 paras or 0.38 percent, thus setting the official middle exchange rate at RSD 105,2982, announced the National Bank of Serbia.

Serbian, Croatian justice ministers meet

Serbian Justice Minister Snežana Malović and her Croatian counterpart Dražen Bošnjaković met on Wednesday in Zagreb.

They agreed that all problems should be resolved jointly in both countries’ interest.

Serbian currency continues to recover

The Serbian dinar (RSD) gained 0.19 percent against the euro (EUR) on Tuesday. The official middle exchange rate is today at RSD 106.1811, announced the National Bank of Serbia.

Tadić, Kosor discuss war crimes case

Serbian President Boris Tadić spoke with Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor about the case of Tihomir Purda, the Serbian president’s cabinet has announced. Tadić underlined during the discussion that “this and similar cases needed to be considered by the appropriate ministries and prosecutions in both Serbia and Croatia, respecting the legal systems of both countries.”

Serbia-Denmark military cooperation plan

Representatives of the Serbian and Danish ministries of defense signed Monday in Belgrade a bilateral military cooperation plan for 2011. Reports said that it “encompasses 30 activities”.

SNS reschedules rally

The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) will submit its initiative for the change of the Constitution in order to reduce the number of MPs on Thursday.

The Progressives have rescheduled their rally for February 5.

“Serbia shouldn’t support census in Kosovo”

Serbian Ministry for Kosovo State Secretary Oliver Ivanović stated on Sunday that the conducting of the population census in Kosovo should not be supported.

He added that the process should be opposed by all political means.

IMF: Serbian economy recovering

Serbia’s economic recovery based on export has gained momentum, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says.

The IMF added, however, that increased inflation and external funding represented risks to macroeconomic stability.

Kosovo daily criticizes Serbian deputy PM

Priština-based daily Koha Ditore criticized Serbian Deputy PM Božidar Đelić over his statement about Serbia’s fight for Kosovo during his visit to Prizren.

Đelić visited Prizren on Christmas and spoke about Serbia’s “fight” for Kosovo and said that Belgrade would not renounce Kosovo.

Serbian Railways joins RNE

The Serbian Railways company has become a full-fledged member of the RailNetEurope (RNE) association. It has been working on enhancing the international cooperation between European railway operators since 2004.

Serbian caught smuggling Afghanis

A Serbian citizen described as people trafficker has been arrested, along with four Afghanis, one of them a 13-year-old boy.
Reports said that the arrests took place in Hungary, near the border with Serbia.

Serbian currency continues slide

The Serbian dinar weakened against the euro by 47 paras on Wednesday, the central bank has announced. The official middle exchange rate today is RSD 106.485 for one euro.

Serbian dinar loses more ground

The Serbian dinar (RSD) lost 0.49 percent of its value against the euro on Monday, with the official middle exchange rate at RSD 106.0156. The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) announced that on December 31, it sold EUR 40mn at the interbank foreign exchange market.

“Economy to stabilize after Telekom sale”

The Serbian economy will stabilize when the state-owned Telekom Srbija telecommunications company has been sold, some analysts believe. In the meantime the standard of living of Serbians will not improve in 2011, with the Red Cross reporting the number of people using its soup kitchens increasing to some 30,000 from the previous figure of 21,000.

President on govt. reshuffle, Kosovo talks

President Boris Tadić says “personnel changes” are possible in the Serbian government led by Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković. In an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Blic he said it was “most important to achieve the dynamic of all work started”, and that there were “more important issues” than changes in the current cabinet.
