Six injured Serbians arrive home

Six Serbian nationals who were injured in a bus crash in Egypt earlier this week arrived in Belgrade on a flight from Cairo last night. The traffic accident, that happened near Luxor on Thursday, took the lives of nine Serbian tourists.

Serbian tourists soon to leave hospital

Serbian tourists who survived a deadly traffic accident near Luxor in Egypt earlier this week are expected to soon leave hospital, reports said. All eight tourists treated for their injuries after their bus collided with a truck, killing nine Serbians on board, are now stable, and expected to be discharged in the next five to six days.

Serbian and U.S officials agree that cooperation in the area of defense is the best area of overall bilateral relations between the two countries, says the MoD. Egypt: Injured in stable condition

All 8 Serbian nationals injured in yesterday’s fatal bus crash near Luxor are in a stable condition in hospital, and have been visited by President Boris Tadić. The names of the dead and injured have been released. A day of mourning has been declared in Serbia.

“Visa liberalization to save EUR 20mn”

Deputy Prime Minister Božidar Đelić says that Serbian industry and the tax payer will save an annual EUR 20mn thanks to visa liberalization.

Đelić told daily Večernje Novosti that Serbia had to meet several more obligations by October.

MFA: 9 Serbians dead in Egypt bus crash

According to the latest information, nine Serbian tourists died in a bus crash near Luxor in Egypt, the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. This is the still unofficial number given to the Serbian embassy in Cairo by Egypt’s police, the ministry explained.

Hague president: Serbia’s desire evident

Hague Tribunal President Patrick Robinson says that Serbia’s desire to improve relations is noticeable, commending the work of the Serbian judiciary. “The work of the Serbian courts and the readiness of the judges to deal with very tough cases, regardless of the consequences on the political scene, should be commended,” Robinson said after meeting with Supreme Court President Nata Mesarović in his first visit to Serbia.

14 more swine flu cases after EXIT festival

Serbian health services have identified 14 new cases of swine flu in people who attended the EXIT music festival in Novi Sad. This brings the total number of swine flu cases in Serbia up to 68.

RS, Serbia sign cooperation deal

An agreement was signed in Banja Luka between the Serbian and Republic of Srpska (RS) governments and two commercial banks on Tuesday. The agreement is on subsidizing interest rates for loans needed to purchase non-durables in 2009, including IMT tractors, Fiat Punto cars, furniture and the use of tourism packages.

Thaci: Belgrade considering recognition

Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci says that Belgrade has begun considering recognizing Kosovo’s unilateral independence. Serbian Kosovo Minister Goran Bogdanović called Thaci’s statements a marketing ploy.

Hague judges to visit Belgrade

A delegation of Hague Tribunal judges led by Court President Patrick Robinson will be in Belgrade on July 16-17, according to the Serbian Supreme Court. The Serbian parliament has finished its general debate on four draft laws, one of which is related to the proposed changes to the labor law. The parliamentary session is expected to reconvene on Wednesday.

Belgrade, Zagreb talk air traffic issues

Negotiations have begun in Belgrade between Serbian and Croatian experts from the transportation ministries regarding various traffic issues. However, the key question that the negotiations are expected to answer is whether Serbian national carrier Jat Airways will be able to receive a license for flying to Croatia’s coastal town of Dubrovnik, since the Croatian government conditions this with regulating relations in air travel between the two countries.

NIS to see EUR 500mn for modernization

Some EUR 500mn will be invested in the modernization of NIS over the next three years, it has been announced. EUR 60mn of this sum will be set aside for an environmental program at the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS) company, majority owned by Russia’s Gazprom.

Serbia’s nationalist party has modernised

The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), a more moderate offshoot of the extreme nationalist Serbian Radical Party (SRS), has eclipsed its parent and stands level in opinion polls with President Boris Tadic’s Democratic Party (DS), which dominates the national government. Allied to other legal changes, the SNS and DS now look poised to dominate national politics, creating a two-party system that holds out the prospect of more stable and coherent governments, of either liberal pro-EU or nationalist complexion.

Belgrade and its municipalities have customarily been DS strongholds but municipal elections in the first half of June gave victory in the districts of Zemun and Vozdovac to the SNS, which is led by former SRS presidential candidate, Tomislav Nikolic, who broke with the SRS in October of last year. On July 8th it was reported that the SNS was poised to begin coalition talks in the two districts with the Socialist Party of Serbia, thus bringing an end to DS rule in the district. …
