Shadow economies have grown since the financial crisis began
A NEW estimate of the size of shadow economies around the world sheds light on a worrying trend. Friedrich Schneider, of Linz University in Austria, reckons that, for the first time in a decade, transactions taking place outside the taxable and observable realm of the official economy captured by GDP numbers are increasing. Shadow economy does not mean ill-gotten gains here, but legal economic activity that is not taxed. Mr Schneider attributes this reversal to the financial crisis, which seems to be pushing more people in OECD and EU countries to avoid the extra burden of taxation by resorting to informal transactions. The shadow economy, in other words, can act as a cushion when times are tough.

She is let out of her protective cage once a year, for a whiff of fresh air. And this is when many a researcher would love to get their hands on Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous muse, in order to find out more about how she was painted.
For a long time, scientists and curators have wondered how da Vinci created shadows on her face with seemingly no brushstrokes or contours. Art experts call this shadowing technique sfumato—like the Italian word for smoke, fumo. Experts have long suspected sfumato shadowing has something to do with the glazes that da Vinci used above the paint layer. But proving this has been difficult because snatching a sample of the Mona Lisa’s face for chemical analysis is, unsurprisingly, frowned upon. …

A controversial decision to release a Libyan prisoner
THE bombing that blew up Pan Am flight 103 in the sky above Lockerbie, a small Scottish town, on December 21st 1988, was the worst terrorist atrocity in British history. Of the 270 people who died, 189 were Americans; 11 were killed on the ground by falling debris. On August 20th the only person convicted of the crime was released from prison in Scotland.
After a tortuous diplomatic and legal process, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence agent, was tried in the Netherlands, but under Scottish law, in 2000-01. His co-accused was acquitted; Mr Megrahi was sentenced to life, with a minimum term that was later set at 27 years. Now suffering from advanced and terminal cancer, Mr Megrahi had asked to be released on compassionate grounds. Separately, under a prisoner-transfer agreement that they recently agreed with Britain, the Libyan authorities requested in May that he be sent home to serve out the rest of his sentence. …
