Jackson Browne & David Lindley Album & International Tour

JACKSON BROWNE & DAVID LINDLEY COME TOGETHER FOR INTERNATIONAL TOUR

THE DUO RELEASE LOVE IS STRANGE, A 2-CD LIVE SET ON MAY 11

Jackson Browne

Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will take to the road this summer with his band and longtime friend and musical co-conspirator David Lindley. Comprising dates in the U.S. and Europe, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour follows the May 11 release of Love Is Strange (Inside Recordings), a 2-CD live set capturing a tour of Spain that Browne and Lindley did in 2006.

The Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour begins with a month-long European leg kicking off in Bristol, UK on June 3. Other highlights include shows at the Stadpark in Hamburg, Germany (6/15), Casino de Paris in Paris, France (6/18), and Hampton Court Palace and Royal Albert Hall in London (6/8 and 6/29, respectively). More European dates will be announced shortly.

Stateside, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour gets underway July 20 at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. U.S. summer dates run through the end of September; the first U.S. leg concludes at Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta on August 15. Highlights along the way include the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles (7/23), the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA (7/24), Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO (8/5), and the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX (8/13).

Accompanying Jackson Browne and David Lindley on tour will be Browne’s band of almost 20 years: Kevin McCormick (bass), Mark Goldenberg (guitars), Mauricio Lewak (drums) and Jeff Young (keyboards, backing vocals). They’re joined by members (since 2008) Chavonne Stewart and Alethea Mills, vocalists Browne (as a mentor) met in 2001 when they were attending Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles, singing in the school choir.

On record and in performance, Jackson Browne and David Lindley have a musical association reaching back almost 40 years. Regarded as a legendary stringed-instrument virtuoso, Lindley has played on many of Browne’s albums, beginning with 1973′s For Everyman, and on classics including Late For The Sky and The Pretender (the latter two both on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time). Browne also produced Lindley’s best-known LP, 1983′s acclaimed El Rayo-X.

Prior to 2010′s Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour, the last time the two musicians played live dates together was a 2006 run of concerts in Spain-in grand concert halls, rock venues, and intimate clubs alike. That tour resulted in the forthcoming 2-CD album Love Is Strange, “En Vivo Con Tino” – featuring Browne and Lindley live with celebrated Spanish percussionist Tino di Geraldo. Set for worldwide release May 11 on Browne’s independent label Inside Recordings, Love Is Strange was produced by Jackson Browne and Paul Dieter.

In liner notes Browne wrote for Love Is Strange, he considers Lindley’s reputation for elusiveness, nearly as mythic as his string-playing prowess. “Why had I not thought of this before? Take him where he doesn’t speak the language and he will HAVE TO leave the gig and come with you to the restaurant, or to the club,” says Browne. “This was an unexpected strategy breakthrough in a pursuit that for a legion of friends, disciples and admirers has become known as ‘stalking the wild Lindley.’”

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra: Tour/Album

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra Premiere Video and Announce U.S. Tour
in Support of New Album, Kollaps Tradixionales

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (SMZ) returns with its sixth full-length recording and first since the band’s lineup change in summer 2008. Having shed three members and recruiting a new drummer, the group officially dropped the “Tra-La-La Band” from its name, played a debut performance as a newly minted quintet at All
Tomorrow’s Parties in upstate NY, and embarked on an extensive European tour through the Fall of 2008. As Kollaps Tradixionales ably demonstrates, the band has lost none of its raw and frazzled anthemic power and continues to forge bold new ground in its search for a unique hybrid of punk, blues, psych, folk and modern orchestral idioms.

Kollaps Tradixionales is available on standard CD (in a custom gatefold paperboard jacket) and limited-edition deluxe CD (which is packaged together with a 6″x9″ 16-page perfect-bound art book and poster). The album also comes in a deluxe first pressing on double 10″ vinyl, with the art book, a CD copy, and two different posters
inside. The album is also available digitally. You can purchase the album here.

Kollaps Tradixionales Track List:
1. There Is A Light
2. I Built Myself A Metal Bird
3. I Fed My Metal Bird The Wings Of Other Metal Birds
4. Kollapz Tradixional (Thee Olde Dirty Flag)

U.K.’s Great Escape Fest

U.K.’S GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FIRST WAVE OF ARTISTS

Broken Social Scene

The Great Escape, Europe’s acclaimed music festival and industry conference has announced the first wave of acts for its landmark fifth annual Brighton, U.K. outing. Taking over 30+ venues throughout the city and hosting over 350 bands playing across three days, the event will once again showcase rising stars, as well as give fans the opportunity to see some of the most loved bands around in pleasingly intimate surroundings.

Opening the 2010 festival season in style and running from May 13-15, this year’s Great Escape has confirmed Manchester’s Delphic will be bringing their much lauded indie-rave hybrid to southern shores. Tipped as ones to watch by all in 2010, and already garnering almost universally high praise for the debut album Acolyte, this may be the last chance you get to see the band before they make the leap to filling the stadiums that their anthemic warehouse-pop hints at.

Also confirmed for this year’s event are drum ‘n’ bass overlords Chase and Status. Having built a reputation as one of the most blisteringly on-point live acts in dance music, it’s guaranteed to be nothing short of breathtaking to witness them dropping the heavy bass pressure.

Canadian uber-group Broken Social Scene, who are currently putting the finishing touches to their fourth album, will be crossing the Atlantic to join the action with their incredibly engaging baroque-pop. The festival will also be set alight by quirky new wave bliss from the sublime Marina and The Diamonds, hooky electronica from the BBC‘s top tip for 2010 and BRITS Critics Choice winner Ellie Goulding, cutting edge Basque folk funk from Crystal Fighters, intergalactic rockabilly-esque folk from Sheffield duo Slow Club, experimental synth sounds from Philadelphia’s Cold Cave, Brighton’s very own Esben & The Witch, lush and icy electro-pop from Hurts, garage rocking duo Japandroids, psychedelic surf rock from Real Estate, swampy ragged blues from Timber Timbre, indie rock with a side of calisthenics from Darwin Deez, hazy bedroom pop from Best Coast, punky power-popsters The Cheek, primal soundscapes from Wild Palms and psych action from Kiwi band Ruby Suns.

Early bird tickets, that not only get you in to see all the bands but will also get you access to outdoor gigs, afternoon shows, club nights, after parties and much more, are on sale now for a mere 45 Euro here.

Carolina Chocolate Drops: Genuine Negro Jig & Tour

CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS’ GENUINE NEGRO JIG OUT 2/23

Carolina Chocolate Drops

Nonesuch Records is set to release Genuine Negro Jig, the label debut of North Carolina-based string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops on February 23. The album was produced by critically acclaimed recording artist and songwriter Joe Henry (Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke).

Genuine Negro Jig features string band interpretations of Blu Cantrell‘s beat-box driven R&B single “Hit ‘Em Up Style” and Tom Waits‘ “Trampled Rose,” as well as a pair of original compositions, alongside traditional tracks such as “Cornbread and Butterbeans” and “Trouble in Your Mind.”

It is the band’s second record; their 2007 release, Dona Got a Ramblin’ Mind, was praised by Paste for “bravely and expertly reclaiming the string band tradition for modern African-American culture,” while NPR‘s Weekend Edition calls the band “the hottest thing to hit the old-time music community in decades.” The band is touring in advance of the album’s release, dates below.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops formed after band members Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson met at the Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, NC in 2005, and have toured continuously since the band’s inception. All three trained in the Piedmont banjo and fiddle musical tradition under the tutelage of Joe Thompson, who, at age 90, is believed to be the last living performer from the Piedmont string band heyday. While old-time Southern string music is often associated with Caucasian musicians from Appalachia, Giddens pointed out in a recent NPR interview that “it seems that two things get left out of the history books. One, that there was string band music in the Piedmont, period. (And that) black folk was such a huge part of string tradition.” The Carolina Chocolate Drops seek to not only correct this misunderstanding, but to keep the centuries-old string music tradition alive and developing.

The members of Carolina Chocolate Drops all come from diverse musical backgrounds, sharing singing duties and swapping instruments throughout their sets. Flemons has immersed himself in the music of the past, with a prodigious record collection and an immense knowledge of the different playing styles of the blues, country, and string band traditions. In addition to her work with Joe Thompson, Giddens — a Piedmont native — studied opera at Oberlin Conservatory, performs with a Celtic band and is also an avid contra dancer and caller. Robinson, the group’s main fiddler, also plays banjo; he grew up in a house full of musicians—his mother is a classically trained opera singer and cellist, his sister a classical pianist and his grandfather a harmonica player.
