The U.S. House today passed the telework bill, requiring executive agencies to support the option of employees working remotely as much as possible.  The Federal government has trailed the private sector in adopting a mobile workforce, but its need to compete for talented new hires, and to ensure continuity of operations despite man-made and natural disasters, made the benefits of telework compelling.  State and local governments may follow the Federal government’s example in shifting employees from desktop to notebook computers.

By replacing RISC systems with Xeon-based Linux servers, GM has more than tripled its computational capability for advanced simulation and design and cut associated electrical consumption and hardware ownership costs by more than 75 percent. GM has used the compute power to reduce its new car design cycle to just 18 months from 48.

Chip Shot: Intel Capital America Fund 80% Invested

At the eleventh annual Intel Capital CEO Summit in Huntington Beach, CA, Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini gave an update on Intel Capital’s Invest in America (IIA) Fund, a $200 million commitment to investing in innovation in the U.S. over the next two years.  In less than nine months, Intel Capital has invested nearly 80% of the committed dollars in 56 companies around the country. These investments, totaling $156 million, are in exciting new areas from cloud computing and cleantech to educational gaming and smartphones. Intel, along with 24 fellow Venture Capitalists,  is committed to the nation’s global competitiveness and investing in industries that will produce the next high tech jobs in the U.S.

Chip Shot: Intel Confirms CognoVision Acquisition

Intel has acquired CognoVision Solutions Inc., a privately held software company based in Toronto, Canada. CognoVision processor-intensive video analytics software based computer vision algorithms for digital signs, many of which are increasingly being powered by Intel Core processors. The acquisition is part of Intel’s overall digital signage strategy, which also includes the recently announced Intel, Microsoft and NEC strategic relationship. Intel is not providing more detail at this time.

Hitachi GST, unveiled today its first enterprise-class solid-state drive family, a joint development using Intel 34nm NAND flash memory and advanced SSD technology. The Ultrastar SSD400S family of SSDs from Hitachi combines enterprise-grade NAND flash, proprietary endurance firmware and power loss management techniques from Intel to extend reliability, endurance and sustained performance.

With the release of the MeeGo* 1.1 software development kit (SDK) today, the Intel AppUpSM Developer Program introduced a MeeGo portal on the Intel AppUpSM center and associated storefronts. Intel AppUp Developer Program is committed to helping developers be successful on MeeGo, which was the result of merging the Moblin and Maemo platforms. In preparation for the official launch of MeeGo-supported applications in 2011, Intel is inviting application developers to download the MeeGo 1.1 SDK and visit the AppUp developer site for MeeGo to get started.

A new survey of 1,000 American teens revealed that despite high personal confidence in math and science, American teens are not confident in their country’s ability to compete in these subjects. The survey, commissioned by Intel, suggests that teens, as individuals, may not feel a part of what they acknowledge is a math and science problem plaguing the country; a problem that is illustrated by the U.S.’ poor performance on global rankings.
