Baaba Maal: Summer Dates

TOUR INCLUDES STOPS AT BONNAROO, CENTRAL PARK SUMMERSTAGE

SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL, HOLLYWOOD BOWL

Baaba Maal

In the midst of a U.S. tour that has brought audiences to their feet across the country, Baaba Maal has announced initial
June tour dates including a set at Bonnaroo (TN) and the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (CA)
and special shows at the Hollywood Bowl (CA) and Central Park Summerstage (NY). Baaba Maal’s current North
American tour, which kicked off on April 6 in Toronto, ON, is the legendary Senegalese musician’s first U.S. tour in
four years. Baaba and his band have been welcomed back with open arms, with audience members dancing in the
aisles and filling formal concert halls with wild celebration. Stay tuned for more summer dates to be announced.

Baaba Maal’s most recent album, Television, is a collaboration primarily with singer Sabina
Sciubba
and keyboardist Didi Gutman, both members of New York’s Brazilian Girls. The result is a stunningly
beautiful and diverse record that meshes two genres, generally unfamiliar to each other, to produce an eclectic and
romantic sound. The enigmatically named title-track refers to a relatively recent phenomenon in Africa – ubiquitous
TV screens. “The television set is like a stranger you didn’t ask for coming into your living-room,” explains Baaba. “You don’t care about who he is: he just seems to come from nowhere and gives you information.”

Sierra Nevada World Music Fest Adds Don Carlos & Kora

THE 17TH ANNUAL SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL
WELCOMES DON CARLOS AND
KORA

The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival is pleased to announce that Don Carlos and Kora will be performing at the
17th annual musical celebration. SNWMF 2010 will be held at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds June 18 through
20. The fairgrounds, in the heart of Anderson Valley (Boonville), are just 30 minutes south west of Ukiah.

Don Carlos was born and raised in Western Kingston, Jamaica in a very deprived district known as Waterhouse. Don
Carlos began singing in 1973 as a member of Black Uhuru. He sang alongside Garth Dennis and Derrick Simpson, the leader of the
trio. Don played a key role in the recordings of the highly acclaimed Love Crisis album, produced by Prince Jammy
in 1977 which was later re-released as The Black Sounds of Freedom. After some time finding his sound as
a soloist, Carlos blossomed in May 1981 releasing the heavy cultural roots album Suffering for Negus
Roots
. He has since become very popular in the live scene and has released twelve solo albums working
alongside Gold, his backup vocalist and co-writer. Some of his most notable albums include Harvest Time,
Day to Day Living and Them Never Know a Natty Dread were released in 1982. Spread
Out
, also released in 1982, commonly known now as Laser Beam, had many fan favorites. Carlos still maintains
his roots flavor and awesome melodies to this day; he continues to grow in popularity and still performs all over the
world.

Kora are a New Zealand reggae, rock, dub & roots band, originally hailing from Whakatane. Four musical brothers
from the Kora family, Laughton, Francis, Stuart and Brad, began playing together as a band in the early 1990s,
winning the national Rockquest high school band competition in 1991 and the East Coast region Battle of the Bands
three years running, earning a release on Tangata Records for their efforts. In early 2002 Kora’s core members
Laughton and Francis recorded a four song demo while on holiday in Queenstown, sharing songwriting duties with
local muso Dan McGruer who also joined them on bass guitar and keyboards, and inviting visiting Madagascan
tourist Lilou to lay down vocals on the song “Barely Can See.” Kora’s four track demo caught the attention of
Wellington-based record label LOOP Recordings Aota in late 2002, leading to the release of Barely Can See on the
label’s LOOP Select 004 compilation CD in December. In 2007, the group released their acclaimed self titled album,
much to the adoration of their loyal following.

7 Walkers Tour: Papa Mali, Bill Kreutzmann, George Porter Jr.

NEW PROJECT FEATURING FRESH ROBERT HUNTER LYRICS
HITS THE ROAD

Bill Kreutzmann by Chad Smith

Legendary drummer and co-founder of the Grateful Dead, Bill Kreutzmann, together with funky bluesman and voodoo electronic pioneer Papa Mali, officially unveil 7 Walkers‘ spring plans. 7 Walkers, which also features bass virtuoso Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green, JFJO) and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson and Friends), will stop at select markets and festivals through out the country, all in anticipation of a new album release. The complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is included below.

7 Walkers recently spent time at an Austin, Texas studio, recording an album to be released later this year. In addition to a brand-new batch of Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan lyricist) originals that were co-written with the band, the new album offers up favorites from the Grateful Dead repertoire, Papa Mali originals, and some New Orleans and Southern songbook interpretations. Overall, the result is a fiery and funky collection of tunes that quite brilliantly capture the unique collaboration between these two very different musical shamans.

Bill Kreutzmann (who played every show in the Grateful Dead’s illustrious 30 year career as well as The Dead incarnations since) first met funky Papa Mali at a festival in 2008. Bill recalls in a recent interview, “We first met at the Oregon Country Fair last year. He was the headliner on the main stage, and I sat there and watched him and went, ‘This guy’s for real man, I like this guy.’ Then we met, after that he came over to my trailer that I was staying in and you couldn’t separate us, we talked for hours. It was just one of those natural things, you know? You can’t plan it; You can’t make it happen. And then we started playing together.”

Live audio recordings of the 7 Walkers can be heard at the newly re-launched www.billkreutzmann.com.

Meanwhile, at nugs.net, fans can now download live BK3 recordings from their 2009 Colorado shows. Another potent Kreutzmann musical project, BK3 first toured in 2008 and featured a rotating lineup including such players as guitarist Scott Murawski (Max Creek) and bassists James “Hutch” Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt), Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers) and Mike Gordon (Phish).

Kreutzmann is also working to support the efforts of University of California at Santa Cruz, who has committed to helping to archive all things Grateful Dead. As Kreutzmann explains, “I am incredibly happy that the kind archivists at UC Santa Cruz understand the social value of [the Grateful Dead's] priceless archive, and its hallowed meaning to our most beloved ‘Dead Heads.’ Without the care it is now going to receive, these treasures would be lost.”

Hamsa Lila, Airto Moreira: S.F. Green Fest After Party

CHART-TOPPING WORLD MUSIC BAND HAMSA LILA TO PERFORM WITH AIRTO MORIERA
FOR OFFICIAL GREEN FESTIVAL AFTER PARTY BENEFITING COMMON VISION

Hamsa Lila

World music band Hamsa Lila will be returning to the San Francisco Bay area after a three year hiatus to headline a gala event benefiting Common Vision and featuring the legendary Brazilian drum master Airto Moreira. The event is an official Green Festival SF After-Dark event at the renowned Regency Ballroom on Saturday, November 14, 2009.

Hamsa Lila blew up the West Coast world music scene with their hypnotic world fusion sounds back in 2004, when their album Gathering One went to number two on both U.S. and Canadian world music charts. Their infusion of West and North African influences, and multi-lingual, trance-inducing songs had crowds dancing like never before at festivals like Earthdance, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, and High Sierra Music Festival, as well as packing concert venues like The Fillmore and The Independent. Hamsa Lila’s unique blend of traditional instruments and influences along with modern electronic elements brought them international acclaim as a pioneering band in the world fusion genre, who’s membership have played with the likes of Paul Simon, Sting, Michael Franti, Ozomatli, Hugh Masekela, Mickey Hart, and many others.

The Brazilian musical legend Airto Moreira will be heralded as the super-star special guest, leading a group of world drum masters (TBA) in a rhythmic ceremony to kick off the evening, and then performing alongside Hamsa Lila throughout their set. Airto is a multi-instrumentalist/percussionist who has worked with some of the world’s all time greats like Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Santana, Paul Simon, Smashing Pumpkins, Chick Corea, and a host of others. He’s recorded numerous albums over a stellar career that spans four decades, and his recent release entitled Life After That (Narada – Virgin/EMI) has helped to win him the title as the best jazz/fusion percussionist of 2009 by DRUM! magazine.

Common Vision is a 501 (c) 3 organization that works with inner city schools planting fruit trees, traveling throughout California in bio-diesel powered coach buses and teaching young people about growing food and taking care of the Earth. To date the organization has worked with over 50,000 kids, and planted tens of thousands of fruit trees all over the state. Learn More about Common Vision here.

This special evening will be packed with guests, including Bill Rasaki, King Sunny Ade’s Master Talking drummer for 25 years. Rasaki will be performing an opening set with Airto called Planetary Pulse. Additional Master Drummers will be announced soon.

Other acts to perform include Lynx & Janover, DJ Jef Stott (6 Degrees), and DJ Dragonfly.

The evening will also include visual projections by master artists and VJs and the world renowned National Geographic South American photographer Sebastian Belaustegui will be showcasing his African’s in the Americas exhibit as well.

JJ Grey & Mofro: Tour

JJ Grey & Mofro Announce North American Tour

Dates With Derek Trucks And Susan Tedeschi Followed By Two-Month Co-Bill With Shooter Jennings

JJ Grey & Mofro

JJ Grey & Mofro, the Jacksonville, Florida-based swamp, blues, rock, funk, and soul band, have announced quite a massive North American fall tour. In addition to headlining theatre and festival dates, the band will share dates with blues guitarist/vocalist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks. Then, in late September and running through November, JJ Grey & Mofro will embark on a co-headlining tour with country rock outlaw Shooter Jennings and special guest Earl Greyhound.

Grey’s most recent album, Orange Blossoms, has been hailed by USA Today as “intoxicating North Florida blues-rock, with hints of Memphis, Muscle Shoals and garage-band music.” In every song he writes and sings, Grey exudes rocking, funky, melodic front-porch realism. He comes from a long tradition of Southern musical storytellers. His multi-textured music is filled with dynamic rhythms and thought-provoking lyrics. From raw funk to deep soul, blues and rock, JJ and his band, both on CD and live, are simply devastating. Debuting in 2001 with Blackwater, following up in 2004 with Lochloosa, Grey steadily found more and more success. With his two recent releases, 2007′s Country Ghetto and 2008′s Orange Blossoms, along with non-stop touring, JJ Grey is taking his ever-growing fan base along for the ride of their lives.

Broke California poised to shut parks

• Public may lose access to 80% of nature reserves
• State’s plan digs deeper financial hole, say critics

It is hard to envisage a no-entry sign tagged to a towering redwood tree. But the recession – writ on an epic scale in California’s proposal to close 220 state parks – is forcing the American public to confront the closure of the great outdoors.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, California’s governor, is trying to make up a $26bn (£16bn) budget shortfall, and has suggested that California can no longer afford to run its parks.

Conservationists are meanwhile arguing that California cannot afford not to. And this week the federal government appeared to partly agree, with the National Parks Service threatening to seize some of the sites if Schwarzenegger goes ahead with the closures.

The proposed shutdown of the parks would affect 80% of California’s nature reserves, historic sites and recreation areas, and restrict access to 30% of the state’s coastline. Affected areas would stretch from the mountains of the Sierra Nevadas to the beaches and wetlands of Big Sur, and to the deserts of San Diego, where some of the last peninsular bighorn sheep roam.

California is not alone. The crisis has also exposed hitherto hidden casualties of the economic downturn, with states from Oregon to Illinois, and New York to Tennessee, struggling to stretch resources.

Other states have proposed budgets that would put closed signs on parks and historic sites, though none so far has adopted measures as extreme as those being put forward in California.

Pennsylvania presented a budget proposal last month that would shut 35 of its 117 state parks. Several states have been forced to scale back opening hours and services, and dismiss rangers, faced with cuts to budgets – ranging from 39% in Georgia to 57% in Idaho.

The federal government does not have the resources to save more than a handful of California’s parks, let alone all of those across the US. Nonetheless, the National Parks Service issued a letter warning Schwarzenegger that it would use protection clauses under the original land deeds to the states, so as to take control of six parks in the San Francisco area, the dunes around the Big Sur and elsewhere.

“We really are just looking for ways we can keep those places open,” said David Siegenthaler, the National Parks Service’s manager for the state of California. “In these economic times it is probably even more important that people have access to good places.”

Conservationists believe parks can withstand a year or so of closure without lasting harm. But fewer ranger stations will mean increased risk of vandalism, and less maintenance will lead to environmental degradation.

“If it is a year or two I don’t think the damage will be a long lasting situation,” said Philip McKnelly, director of the National Association of State Park Directors. “But ultimately it is going to show as damage to resources.”

A survey of state park directors in mid-May suggested most states had cut spending on parks by 15% in their 2008 budgets, and were considering steeper cuts in the next fiscal year, which started on 1 July for many. In California, the loss will be immediate, conservationists say, putting some of the state’s most visited sites off-limits.

Critics also fear the closures could be irreversible. “Once those places are closed it becomes very difficult to re-open them,” said Traci Verardo Torres, of the California State Parks Foundation, which is protesting against the proposal.

The impact would be felt from the northern limits of the Sierra Nevada mountains — with the proposed shutdown of a park in memory of the doomed members of the Donner party, stranded travellers who resorted to cannibalism during the winter snows — to the deserts south of San DiegoSchwarzenegger’s proposal forces the closure of the only camp grounds inside the giant redwood forests to the north, and it blocks access to Lake Tahoe, though the site is shared by California with Nevada. “All of the parks in Lake Tahoe are proposed for closure,” said Verardo Torres. “If [they] close there would not be a way legally for the public to access the lakes.”

The order would also shutter urban tourist attractions such as San Francisco’s Angel Island — the Ellis Island of America’s Pacific Coast, where the barracks where Chinese migrants were quarantined are preserved. It is not immediately clear, in any case, how California will put vast tracts of land off-limits. “They would have to fence it and guard it to keep people out, and the effort they would have to extend to keep people out would cost just as much to run the park,” said Siegenthaler.

California could be digging itself into a yet deeper financial hole by its actions, some say. Many of the parks are a source of revenue for state and local communities. “Each visitor to a state park is worth $57 per visit. The parks have generated millions throughout California,” said Tim Gibbs, programme manager at the National Parks Conservation Association. “It’s almost as if they are shooting themselves in the foot.”

Broke California poised to shut parks

Femi Kuti: Tour

EXTENSIVE NORTH AMERICAN SUMMER TOUR BEGINS IN JUNE

Femi Kuti

On June 3 in New York City, Afrobeat pioneer Femi Kuti, backed by his
band the Positive Force, will begin a 24-date summer tour spanning North
America, including several shows opening for the Dave Matthews Band, a
headline appearance at the Hollywood Bowl and performances at the Bonnaroo,
Montreal Jazz and Rothbury Music festivals. Kuti’s performances will
feature material from his first studio album of new material in seven years,
the acclaimed Day By Day.

Femi is ready to bring his new material from Day By Day to the many cities
comprising the summer tour. It’s easy to hear that the long respite has
inspired him. He is upbeat, enthusiastic and raring to hit the road again,
in spite of how much has changed since he began his hiatus. “Everybody is
back in training now,” he says. “We have to re-establish my music. We have
to come out and play it live, because the record industry is in such a bad
shape, we are all suffering.”

“Luckily,” he laughs, “the African man is used to suffering.”

Check out JamBase’s 2008 interview with Femi Kuti here.
