Music’s biggest stars – Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, U2, Paul Simon, Metallica, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Friends, Simon & Garfunkel – will come together on October 29 and 30 at Madison Square Garden for two unique concerts celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The shows will be packed with guest stars and unique collaborations designed to tell the story of rock and roll.
Each night will feature entirely different lineups, with artists performing their own songs and the music that inspired them – tracing the history of genres ranging from soul to hard rock. All proceeds raised will go towards creating a permanent endowment for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and Museum. “Twenty-five years ago a group led by legendary Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun created this foundation to recognize and celebrate the music and careers of artists whose music helped shape and define our generation,” said Jann Wenner, Founder and Chairman of Rolling Stone and Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “These once-in-a-lifetime concerts are designed to celebrate the artists and their music.”
A creative team of Tom Hanks and his producing partner Gary Goetzman, Wenner, singer-songwriter Robbie Robertson, Academy Award®-winning screenwriter, director Cameron Crowe and several others will work with the artists to curate the show through the live performances and filmed segments. Joel Gallen, the producer/director behind the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies and the MTV Movie Awards (1995-2006), will direct the show and oversee the 25th Anniversary Celebration along with the creative consultants.

Extraditing hacker ‘could be disaster’

“Humanitarian considerations” that have arisen in the case of Asperger’s syndrome sufferer Gary McKinnon mean he should not face trial in the US for hacking into American military computers, the high court heard today.
In a last-ditch attempt to overturn earlier court decisions that the 43-year-old “UFO enthusiast” should be extradited, his lawyers accused prosecutors of ignoring the “disastrous consequences” of facing trial and a possible lengthy prison sentence in an American “supermax” prison.
The case also comes as the Tories are expected to devote an opposition day debate in parliament tomorrow to McKinnons’ extradition, after David Cameron said he was “deeply saddened and worried” about the case.
McKinnon’s barrister, Ed Fitzgerald, told the high court: “The Crown Prosecution Service wrongly failed to address the specific human rights issues, and the humanitarian issue, raised by the claimant’s Aspergers syndrome.
“The CPS, as a public authority, had a duty to consider whether its failure to prosecute [in the UK] has inevitably exposed him to an avoidable and unnecessary risk of serious psychological suffering,” he added.
The hearing comes after McKinnon signed a statement earlier this year admitting he had committed an offence under UK law by hacking into 97 computers belonging to the US navy and Nasa. The incident, which the US government says is the “biggest military hack of all time” and cost more than $700,000 (£430,000) in repairs, has led to talks between UK prosecutors and the US department of justice since charges were originally brought against the 43-year-old in New Jersey in 2002.
Although previous attempts to halt the extradition – which reached the House of Lords last year – failed, McKinnon’s lawyers have since obtained a diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome after consulting two psychiatrists last year.
“Both experts referred to the grave risk to his health if he was extradited to the US, and [autism expert] Professor [Simon] Baron-Cohen referred to the risk to his life,” Fitzgerald said. “[The director of public prosecutions] failed to confront the human rights arguments for prosecutions in this country rather than in the US,” Fitzgerald added.
Both former home secretary Jacqui Smith and the current home secretary, Alan Johnson, have said they would comply with US requests for McKinnon’s extradition, while prosecutors argue that although McKinnon has admitted to “computer misuse” under UK law, it is less serious than the offence of “computer fraud” alleged against him in the US
The CPS, which defended its positiontoday , claims that the damage caused by the offence took place in the US, and that the investigation and most of the witnesses and evidence were located there. In February the director of public prosecutions, Keir Starmer, said there was not enough evidence to try McKinnon in the UK, an argument which McKinnon’s lawyers deny.
“This was inconsistent with the CPS’s own finding that there was sufficient evidence to prosecute,” Fitzgerald said. “McKinnon’s computer hacking conduct all took place in the UK, insofar as he was located here and using a computer in his home in the UK when he gained unauthorised access to the US systems.”
McKinnon, from Wood Green, north London, is described as “vulnerable” and “misguided” by his supporters, who contrast the efforts to extradite him with terrorist suspects who have been kept in the UK.
“I will not give up this fight until the government intervenes to protect my vulnerable son,” McKinnon’s mother, Janis Sharp, said. “When considering the extradition of Abu Hamza, the then home secretary said ‘Had we evidence in this country of a crime committed here then of course the police and the attorney general would have taken action’. Well, if that’s the approach for a convicted terrorist, why not for a gentle, misguided Asperger’s sufferer like Gary?”

Osaka: the world’s greatest food city

There are at least a dozen very good reasons why author and blogger Michael Booth rates Osaka number one. Which city would you rate your gourmet great?
Simple question: what’s the most greatest, most exciting, most dynamic food city in the world today, the culinary It City of our age?
Paris is past it (going to a restaurant shouldn’t be like going to church). London isn’t quite there yet (where’s the street food?). Hanoi, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai and most major Indian cities will all have their advocates, but is the refinement there? New York is always going to be in with a shout but its great strength is its immigrant cuisines: it lacks an indigenous food culture. Sydney is stuck in the 90s, Lyon in the 1890s, and, as far as I’m concerned, to be a real contender the food roots have to go deep, so that rules out places like Vegas and Cape Town. The market’s nice, but I’ve never had a good meal in Barcelona and though Copenhagen may be flavour of the month, a couple of good restaurants do not a global food capital make.
At the risk of alerting John Crace, I have a new book out, ‘Sushi and Beyond – What the Japanese Know About Food‘. So you’d probably expect me to go with a Japanese city, but it’s not Tokyo or Kyoto that I pine for on a daily basis, but Japan’s often overlooked third city, Osaka.
I originally went to Osaka on the recommendation of Anton Ego – the restaurant critic in Ratatouille (or rather François Simon of Le Figaro, on whom, rumour has it, Ego was based). I interviewed him a few years back for one of those ‘Can Paris Still Cut the Mustard?’ type pieces (answer – ‘no’) and was surprised to hear this most chauvinistic of food writers dismiss my adopted home city out of hand, and plump for Osaka instead.
I booked my flight soon after and found a city fit to burst with incredible places to eat, from the dazzling depichika basement food halls (the greatest food shows on earth), to the exuberant restaurant quarter of Dotonbori, to the top end places like Kahala, a tiny, exclusive counter restaurant beloved of Tetsuya Wakada.
This is a city entirely at ease with its culinary identity but open to foreign influences (in this case, largely Korean), with several unique dishes, and a population possessed of an admirable gluttony for life. They even have a word for their insatiable gluttony, ‘kuidaore’, meaning ‘eat until you burst / go bust’.
The city has an irresistible triumvirate of highly addictive, indigenous fast foods: okonomiyaki (thick, filled pancakes, made with yam flour batter, seafood, pork and kimchi); tako yaki (octopus doughnuts); and kushikatsu (deep fried, breaded skewers – invented at the restaurant Daruma, and much loved by Ferran Adrià , so the chef there told me), each of them slathered in a sweet, savoury, mahogany-coloured sauce. And let’s not forget that kaiten sushi and instant ramen noodles were both invented in the city in the same epochal year (1958 – the latter are rather better than Pot Noodles, I should add).
This is also where you’ll find the world’s greatest (largest, most expensive, best equipped, toughest etc) cooking school, the Tsuji Culinary Institute; and a fish and produce market to rival Tsukiji.
Beat that, Ludlow.

Peruvian President Alan Garcia has overhauled his cabinet appointing a new prime minister, Javier Velasquez Quesquen, and replacing seven others.
The move comes a month after the worst political violence Peru has seen in years, when at least 33 police officers and protesters were killed in clashes.
The violence came as security forces tried to end a blockade of roads and fuel pipelines by indigenous people.
They were protesting at what they see as exploitation of ancestral lands.
The changes at the top of Peruvian politics are intended to breathe fresh air into a cabinet which has been widely discredited.
It was criticised for its handling of protests by indigenous groups over Amazon land rights.
The new Prime Minister, Javier Velasquez Quesquen, is an insider in the governing party, and the president of Congress.
He replaces Yehude Simon, a former leftist who was chosen to build bridges with groups opposed to the government.
The controversial Interior Minister, Mercedes Cabanillas, who denied responsibility for last month’s deadly police operation, has been replaced by former national police chief, Octavio Salazar.
The defence, commerce, work, justice, agriculture and industry ministers have also been replaced.
President Garcia said he would make the changes earlier this week ahead of a three-day national strike.
Critics say Mr Garcia’s government is in the midst of its worst political crisis since he took office three years ago.
Much of the discontent stems from an economic slowdown and rising unemployment.
Poorer Peruvians say they have not benefitted from Mr Garcia’s free market policies. </p
