Singapore Air sees high-end uptick, eyes FY profit

Singapore Airlines (SIA)(SIAL.SI), the world’s biggest airline by market value, has not  given up hope of making a profit this financial year as it sees  a recovery in premium-class bookings, its CEO said on Wednesday.
 
The airline, which said three months ago that it might post its first full-year loss if business conditions did not improve,  said it has seen some recovery in business class bookings as  banks relax restriction on business travels. 

Singapore Air sees pickup in traffic, may add back capacity

Singapore Airlines, which reported its first back-to-back quarterly loss in at least seven years, said it may reintroduce some capacity after an improvement in travel demand.

“There are clear signs from the pattern of forward bookings that have been coming in, that there is not just a narrowing of the drop, but some real growth starting to come in,” Chief Executive Officer Chew Choon Seng told reporters in Singapore today. The airline, which gets about 40% of its revenue from premium travelers, is seeing a “definite” pickup in business class traffic, he said.

SIA says too soon to call global travel recovery

Singapore Airlines, the world’s biggest carrier by market value, said it was too soon to say whether a rebound in air travel last month marked the beginnings of a long-term revival in demand.

“There is not enough evidence yet to conclude that we are back on a firm trail to recovery,” Chief Executive Officer Chew Choon Seng said yesterday at a Star Alliance press conference in New York. Whether the current uptrend persists “remains to be seen”.

SIA yields continue ‘double digit’ drop, Chew says

Singapore Airlines, the world’s biggest carrier by market value, had a “double digit” decline in yields in the quarter ended September as the global recession sapped travel demand.
 
“The third quarter, in general, still remains in the minus territory,” Chief Executive Officer Chew Choon Seng said in a Bloomberg TV interview today in Hong Kong. “But, the rate of decline has come off.”

Singapore Airlines sees Q3 yields remaining negative

Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI), the world’s largest airline by market value, said on Tuesday that the decline in its yields in the second quarter should narrow, but yields would remain in negative territory in the fiscal third quarter ending December. 
 
However, the airline saw no need for further capacity cuts, CEO Chew Choon Seng told reporters on the sidelines of an aviation conference in Hong Kong on Tuesday. 

Tiger Airways adds 7th plane, 30 more jobs in Australia

Tiger Airways Pte, the budget carrier partly owned by Singapore Airlines, added a seventh plane to its fleet in Australia, the company said today in a press release.

Tiger is also creating 30 jobs at its office in Melbourne, the statement said.

The new airplane will allow Tiger to increase service between Sydney and Melbourne to as many as nine round-trips a day, according to the release. It plans to increase flights on the Sydney-Adelaide route to two round-trips daily, it said.

Engine fails on Singapore A380, flight turns back

A Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI) A380 was forced to turn round mid-flight and head back to Paris yesterday after one of its four engines failed, the head of the airline’s French operations said.

The doubledecker A380 took off from Paris at 12.30 p.m. (1030 GMT) with 444 passengers aboard and headed for Singapore, but had to turn round after 2 hours 45 minutes because of the engine problem, airline director Jerry Seah said.

SIA Engineering clinches 10-year maintenance contract from Panasonic Avionics Corp

Mainboard-listed SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) today says it has entered into a 10-year Maintenance Service Agreement with Panasonic Avionics Corporation. No details on the value of the contract was provided.

Panasonic Avionics Corporation is one of the world’s leading supplier of aircraft in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems. The company manufactures the highly advanced eX2 IFE,
which is installed on Singapore Airlines’ latest fleet of aircraft.

SIA takes delivery of 10th A380, spokesman says

Singapore Airlines, the first to fly the Airbus SAS A380 commercially, took delivery of its 10th double-decker plane yesterday, Nicholas Ionides, the carrier’s spokesman, said in an e-mail today.

SIA faces more hedging losses, Morgan Stanley says

Singapore Airlines, the world’s second-largest carrier by market value, may report fuel-hedging losses in the next six or seven quarters as contracts come due, according to Morgan Stanley.
 
The airline will probably suffer losses if jet-kerosene prices stay at US$78 (S$112) a barrel, analysts Chin Lim, Sophie Loh and Pey Herng Yap wrote in an Aug 6 report. The carrier made a fuel-hedging loss of $287 million in the quarter ended June.

SIA sees full-year loss if tough conditions last

Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI), the world’s second largest airline by market value, sees a full year loss if tough conditions continue but said its cash position remains strong and it does not need to raise capital.

SIA posted today its first quarterly loss in six years as the global recession hit passenger and cargo demand, and said the outlook for air cargo remains challenging.

SIA posts $307m loss in 1Q

Singapore Airlines says the combination of the global economic downturn, the outbreak of Influenza A (H1N1) and fuel hedging resulted in a loss of $307 million for the first quarter ended June 2009.

This is the first quarterly loss since the SARS crisis in 2003.

SATS gains 1.3% to $2.30 while SIA Engineering slips 1% to $2.85

Singapore Airport Terminal Services (SATS SP), the ground handling services provider partly owned by Singapore Airlines, gained 1.3% to $2.30. The company said net income in the first quarter ended June 30 rose 17% to $40.4 million.

Meanwhile, SIA Engineering Co. (SIE SP), the aircraft maintenance arm of SIA, slipped 1% to $2.85. The company said net income in the first-quarter ended June 30 declined 23% to $45.1 million.
