Facebook ‘breaks Canadian law’

Facebook website screen shot

Popular social networking site Facebook is breaching Canadian law by holding on to users’ personal information indefinitely, a report has concluded.

An investigation by Canada’s privacy commission found the US-based website also gave "confusing or incomplete" information to subscribers.

Facebook says it is aiming to safeguard users’ privacy without compromising their experience of the site.

More than 200 million people actively use Facebook.

They include about 12 million in Canada, more than one in three of the population.

‘Practical solutions’

Canadian Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart laid out the findings of the report at a news conference in Ottawa.

She accepted that Facebook regarded privacy issues as a top concern "and yet we found serious privacy gaps in the way the site operates".

Facebook’s policy of holding on to subscribers’ personal information, even after their accounts had been deactivated, was one area that breached Canada’s privacy laws, she said.

The law requires organisations to retain such information only for as long as it necessary to meet appropriate purposes, she was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

The report said Facebook’s information about privacy practices was "often confusing or incomplete", and urged the site to make its policies more transparent to users.

Facebook was also criticised for failing to adequately restrict access of users’ personal details to some of the 950,000 developers in 180 countries who provide applications, such as games, for the site.

In response, Facebook Chief Privacy Officer Chris Kelly told AFP it was working with the commission to resolve the issues.

"Overall, we are looking for practical solutions that operate at scale and respect the fact that people come to share and not to hide," he said.

"We continue our dialogue and have every confidence that we will come to acceptable conclusions. I think the concerns are fully resolvable".

Ms Stoddart said she would review Facebook’s progress in 30 days.

Under Canadian law, she can take the case to a federal court to have her recommendations enforced, the BBC’s Lee Carter in Toronto says.</p

How to Be A Good Web Firm Consumer

lifehack-web
So you’ve hired a web firm to design your new web site. Now what? Today I’m completing my Business Web Series and talking about what you can do to be a good consumer of web site developers and designers.

Just like most business owners have tales of woe from having their web sites designed, most web developers and designers have stories of their own. Educate yourself, hire the right experts to help you through this process, and hold up your end of the bargain and you may sail through without being the star of one of the web firm’s horror stories (or your own!).

1. Negotiate knowledgeably.

When you get a quote from a web firm, it just makes good sense to shop around. But when you shop around, compare apples to apples. Comparing a quote from an American firm, where you’ll most likely have an English-speaking team to work with, with a quote from a firm in a Third World country, where living expenses are a fraction of U.S. costs, just isn’t fair. You don’t want to approach your web firm with, “Why does it cost this much, when I can have a site built in India for $300?”

Also, if you’re working with that rare breed of web firm where you’ll get both web strategy advice and search engine optimization, you simply cannot compare the pricing with your standard web design firm. So make sure you’re comparing like quotes before you consider asking for a price match.

2. Hold up your end of the bargain.

One of the most frustrating things for a web developer is when the client doesn’t provide timely feedback. In many cases, when you hire a web firm, you pay for part of your web site upfront, then you have to pay the rest just before launch. If you’re not providing timely feedback, not only are you holding up the launch and jeopardizing your timeline, but you’re also keeping your team from getting paid. In this economy, that’s not good for anyone. So make sure you pay your bills on time and provide responsive, useful feedback quickly to keep things moving along.

In addition, if you haven’t hired the web firm to provide you with content or copywriting, make sure you provide them with your content in a timely manner. The last thing you want is for your web site to be held up because you haven’t delivered the materials, or worse, launch without content. Make sure you

3. Be smart and educate yourself.

I recently talked with a potential client who’d been spending hundreds of dollars each month for a firm to “do search engine optimization” on her web site. She had no idea what that meant, but kept paying them anyway. In the meantime, this firm hadn’t touched her code or her copy, two of the hallmarks of a pretty substantial scam in my book.

I’m not suggesting that every small business owner should know everything about what constitutes good or bad SEO. If you don’t have the time or the technical know-how to educate yourself in what your web site needs or to learn enough to know when you’re being scammed, then you need a trusted adviser who does know these things and can watch over your project and protect your interests.

4. Don’t be swayed by “pretty.”

This one isn’t so much about being a good web consumer for your developer’s benefit as being a good consumer for your business. Too many business owners today are persuaded that “pretty” is the most important part of their web design. It’s not.

An attractive web site certainly is important, but it’s not the most important thing. There are specific business elements and “screen real estate” issues
like what goes “above the fold” that you need to pay attention to as well. And these things may be even more important than “pretty.” Stay too focused on the appearance of your site and you’ll likely end up with a site that doesn’t meet your business needs and has poor usability. Instead, try to strike a balance between the appearance of the site and meeting your business goals. Again, if you don’t know how to do this, hire someone who does.

Having a web site designed can seem like a harrowing experience for many business owners. The investment in a strong web site can seem substantial for the micro-entrepreneur, especially considering the many potential pitfalls. That said, if you don’t have the time, inclination, or tech-savvy spirit to learn what you need to know to avoid those pitfalls and be a good consumer (for your own good, as well as the good of your design firm), hire an expert who can navigate the process for you and help you meet your business goals.

Mobile Phone directory site down

Dominic Laurie
Working Lunch

mobile phone

The mobile phone number directory 118800 has suspended its services in order to carry out technical repairs.

The site’s owner Connectivity admits it is difficult to handle the number of unsubscribe requests from mobile phone users.

The site says that the downtime will also be used to make technical improvements to correct delays in connection times.

It is not able to take ex-directory requests at the moment.

In the meantime, "all ex-directory requests made by people in our directory to date are being processed. There will be no need to resend these requests", reads a statement on the company website.

Connectivity says that it hopes to have the site up and running again soon, but until that happens, customers will only be able to use the 118800 service over the phone, and only then to access landline numbers.

Rushed Launch

How the Service Works

  • Anyone searching for a number can type the name and location of the person into the 118800 website.
  • If the company has it, contact details will be sent in a text message to them.
  • If they do, they will call them up while you are still on the line and ask them whether they are prepared to have your call put through to them.
  • Both services cost £1.
  • In neither case is the mobile phone number given over to the person making the request.
  • 118800 gets its numbers from commercially available sources: market research companies, online businesses and number brokers.

Connectivity launched the phone and web based service in mid-June.

It admits it became operational sooner than it wanted to, but because of intense media interest, it decided to bring the start date forward. It concedes that its systems were not prepared.

Concerns by some mobile phone customers led many to want to remove their number off the 11880 database and become ex directory.

Controversy

Hundreds of Working Lunch viewers have emailed in, reporting problems when trying to take their numbers off the company’s list. The original story on the Working Lunch website covering the site’s launch, had over 1.3 million hits last week after the link began to be circulated as a viral email.

"We are accessing data in the same way that lots of other companies do for marketing purposes", Shona Forster, 118800′s Marketing Director, told Working Lunch last month.

She will appear on the the programme again on July 14 to address concerns sent in by viewers.</p

Traffic rockets to Twitter site

By Dan Whitworth
Newsbeat technology reporter

Twitter website

The number of people visiting Twitter increased 22-fold in the last twelve months, according to an internet monitoring company.

According to Hitwise, the site is now the fifth most viewed social networking site compared with the 84th last year.

Ninety-three per cent of Twitter’s growth has happened in 2009.

Director of Research at Hitwise Robin Goad said: "If people accessing their Twitter accounts via mobile phones and third party applications were included, numbers could be higher."

Another measure of Twitter’s popularity is its jump in the overall internet rankings.

Last year it was the 969th most visited site on the web. It’s now the 38th most visited website.

Protestors in Iran

Twitter is popular with celebrities like Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry.

"If anything, the service is even more popular than our numbers imply," said Robin Goad.

"We are only measuring traffic to the main Twitter website.

"If people accessing their Twitter accounts via mobile phones and third party applications like Twitterific or Tweetdeck were included, the numbers could be even higher.

"Media coverage of the site has escalated significantly this year and high profile celebrity endorsements likes Ashton Kutcher have come rolling in."

Micro-blogging site Twitter has also had a major impact on so-called ‘citizen journalism’, when members of the public use the site to break major news stories or updates such as the terror attacks in Mumbai or the recent protests in Iran.

But the social networking website still has some work to do to catch the likes of MySpace, Bebo and Facebook.

The number of people using Facebook has risen above the 20 million mark this year in the UK and 200 million around the world.</p

Why Every News Site Should Put a Continuously Updated News Aggregation on the Homepage

My post on Drudge beating all other news sites on engagement was an aha for many, which is interesting because the lesson of Drudge has been around for a decade. But the lessons of web publishing are all so utterly counterintuitive that I suppose they take a while to sink in.
That said, a number of [...]

Drudge Report: News Site That Sends Readers Away With Links Has Highest Engagement

There are two main reasons why news sites are reluctant to send readers away by linking to third-party content. First, you shouldn’t send people away or else they won’t come back to your site. Second, a page with links that sends people away has low engagement, which doesn’t serve advertisers well.
But if you actually look [...]
